Abstract The study deals with Imam Shafei s scholarly character and the development of his jurisprudential school. Shafei s new methodological approach to Ijtihad and jurisprudence derived from the circumstances. He offered a new approach to Ijtihad based on accurate accounts and common sense brought Ahl-i Ray and Ahl-i Hadith together. Shafei presented his jurisprudential school in two versions (earlier & later) during his life. Shafei was taught Arabic, Interpretation (Tafsir), jurisprudence (Fiqh) and Hadith by scholars from Mecca, Medina, Iraq, Yemen and Egypt and then, founded a new school different from Ahl-i Ray and Ahl-i Hadith. Based on the historical method, I explore the development of Shafei s comprehensive vision and his modest approaches on jurisprudence (Fiqh), Hadith and interpretation (Tafsir).
