Greenland Arctic Circle Voyage

DARTMOUTH ACADEMIC LEADER - PROFESSOR ROSS VIRGINIA

TRAVEL WITH US TO THE VERY EDGE OF CIVILIZATION—GREENLAND AND THE ARCTIC CIRCLE—WHERE NIGHT AND DAY MELD UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN. Here, rugged, beautiful and ever-changing landscapes serve as a testament to the powerful forces that shape our planet and impact its climate.

Voyage along Greenland’s culturally rich western coast and into its breathtaking fjords. See extraordinary terrain, remote areas and small ports rarely visited by even the most experienced travelers. Encounter Greenland’s wondrous glaciers and icebergs at close range; discover a nature lover’s paradise, home to colonies of sea birds, pods of whales and magnifi cent Arctic scenery; cross into the Arctic Circle; and spend two nights in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Dr. Virginia will provide a series of lectures during our program and tour the Greenland Ice Cap with you. In addition, an expedition team of expert naturalists will guide you on shore excursions and aboard Zodiac craft to explore the intricate ecosystems and marvelous nuances of wildlife found ashore.

Accompanying us on this Arctic Circle voyage is Dartmouth College’s Myers Family Professor of Environmental Science and Director of the Institute of Arctic Studies within the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, Dr. Ross Virginia. He will provide valuable insight into the past and present forces shaping Greenland and this fragile region.

Growing up in snowy Syracuse, New York, Dr. Virginia read fervently about the race to the South Pole. Today, he studies human infl uences on

biogeochemical cycles in terrestrial systems and has participated in analysis of critical issues facing the Arctic and its inhabitants as a result of climate change. His current research focuses on carbon and nutrient cycling in the tundra ecosystems of western Greenland and the polar deserts of Antarctica.

In his role as Co-Director of the University of the Arctic Institute of Arctic Policy, and in conjunction with Dartmouth College, Dr. Virginia has established an exchange program forGreenlandic students and secured grants to design a program of collaboration between scientists and engineers around polar environmental change while incorporating fi eldwork and policy studies in Greenland. In Antarctica, a portion of the McMurdo Dry Valleys has been renamed “Virginia Valley,” honoring his lifelong efforts in conducting long-term ecological research. In October 2014, Professor Virginia was selected by the U.S. State Department as one of two distinguished lead scholars of the newly established Fulbright Arctic Initiative.

YOUR EXPEDITION TEAMThe expedition team aboard the M.V. SILVER EXPLORER are seasoned experts and naturalists who have studied and traveled extensively in the most remote regions of the world. Their expertise spans marine biology, ornithology, ecology, geology, glaciology, conservation and environmental education, history and photography. The team’s collaborative efforts, experience, enthusiasm for sharing their knowledge and a particular interest in the world’s ecosystems make them exceptionally well-suited to lead your expedition along the western coast of Greenland.

Scheduled guest speakers may be altered due to circumstances beyond our control. See Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Binding Arbitration Agreement.

Cruising GreenlandFriday, August 28 to Wednesday, September 2Mysterious Greenland is the world’s largest island and one of the last true wildernesses on Earth. It is almost entirely covered by an ice cap that holds 10 percent of the planet’s fresh water reserves. Crystal-blue glaciers fl ow from craggy slopes down into stunning ice-fi lled bays. The many forms of these giant tabular icebergs become living art, dazzling in the light and mysterious in the fog and suffused with an aura of unfathomable vastness. The western coast of Greenland features seemingly endless inlets and ice fl oes and dramatic fjords and

soaring peaks—a veritable “dream landscape” of pristine and gorgeous scenery. It was here that the Inuit people, nomadic hunters of Siberian descent, settled 5000 years ago and carved out an existence on the wild lands between the sea and the glaciers. The Inuits still form the largest percentage of Greenland’s population and carry on a traditional way of life, including fi shing by kayak and hunting by dogsled. Please note that the ship’s cruising pattern, destinations, expedition highlights and wildlife sightings noted here are dependent on weather, ice and sea conditions and wildlife activity and are subject to change. Your Captain and Expedition Team will work together to ensure optimal exploration opportunities.

Discover the solitude and natural beauty of the Arctic in Sisimiut, the second largest town in Greenland and inhabited for over 4500 years. Although it is the country’s northernmost port that remains free of ice in the winter, traveling by dog sled has been the primary means of winter transportation for centuries. Meet a dog sled team and their owners, who will demonstrate the lifestyle of sledding and discuss the sturdy and reliable Husky-like Greenlandic sled dog. This evening, enjoy the Captain’s Welcome Reception on board the ship. Cruise into Disko Bay en route to the small fi shing and hunting town of Qeqertarsuaq, formerly the economic hub of northern Greenland, founded in 1773 by whaler Svend Sandgreen. Walk to Blaesedalen, a large glacial valley noted for its icing ridges, where disintegrating sheets of ice have thrust the earth upward, and a braided river system (criss-crossing), including the remarkable red-colored river of Røde Elv, tinted by sediment. Nearby, explore the oldest manned Arctic station in the world, founded in 1906 and currently maintained by the University of Copenhagen to promote Arctic research and university-level environmental science education. From here, you can see the majestic landscape etched by the awe-inspiring Weichselian ice sheet. Visit the archaeological site in Qilakitsoq where the best-preserved human remains in North America were accidentally discovered by hunters in 1972. The eight mummies—six women and two children—date from

Today, as they have for centuries, fi shing vessels ply the waters around Greenland.

approximately 1475 and are now on display in the National Museum in Nuuk. Be on deck with expedition leaders to watch for whales while cruising to the remote community of Uummannaq. Join the guided walking tour through the village, located at the base of an immense basalt mountain, over 3800 feet tall, and learn about daily village life that centers on the fi shing industry. Turf huts in the center of town serve as an homage to Inuit culture and daily life.

Meet the locals in the small community of Saqqaq and share their tradition of morning kaffe-mik (coffee and cake) while discussing their culture and lifestyle. Many icebergs migrate into this area, calved from the Jakobshavn Glacier, the northern hemisphere’s most active glacier. Join a naturalist aboard a Zodiac to see up close this rugged coastline and its glacial tongues, black-green rocks and imposing icebergs.

The Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage site that stretches from the Greenland ice sheet to Disko Bay, produces nearly 20 million tons of ice each day—more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. These icefjords and glaciers calve into the sea with surprising ferocity and regularity as their retreat quickens. Enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to navigate among the fjord’s towering icebergs in a fi shing boat for a truly authentic local experience and unforgettable coastal tour. In the town of Ilulissat, founded as a trading post in 1741, enjoy a guided walking tour, watch a demonstration of ancient fi shing methods, savor locally caught fi sh and visit the local history museum, which houses exhibits on polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. Dartmouth researchers are studying glacial advance and melt dynamics near Ilulissat. You may choose to join the optional helicopter excursion to see the magnifi cent Ilulissat Icefjord and Greenland Ice Cap from a spectacular aerial perspective. Enjoy a day at sea to join discussions about the region with Dr. Virginia and the expedition team and to enjoy the ship’s amenities.

The Husky-like Greenlandic sled dog originated in Siberia and was brought to Greenland over 4000 years ago.

Enjoy this rare opportunity to watch for humpback whales, one of the elusive gentle giants of the Arctic.

Be on deck to look for Arctic marine life like these harp seals resting on the ice.

Calving glaciers produce icebergs of all shapes and sizes, creating nature’s own fl oating sculpture garden along the coast of Greenland.
