Self Treatment of Common Illnesses & Accidents
Colds & Flu
This usually presents with a runny nose, cough and a raised temperature. You may feel aches and pains. The usual cause is a virus and antibiotics are of no use in their treatment unless you develop a secondary infection on top of this. Management consists of rest and taking plenty fluids. If you have a headache or fever, take Paracetamol.
11
Minor Cuts and Grazes
Wash the wound thoroughly. Stop any bleeding by applying a dressing or clean handkerchief firmly tothe wound for five minutes. Cover with a clean dry dressing. Do not apply any creams or ointments.
Diarrhoea and Vomiting
Diarrhoea and vomiting will usually get better on its own. Treatment consists of replacing the fluid you lose with either water or preferably Re-hydration sachets e.g. Electrolade, Rehidrat or Dioralyte. These are made into a drink and are available from the chemist.
The digestive system should be rested avoiding solids and milk for at least 24 hours, and then taking a light diet over the next 24 hours.Diarrhoea and vomiting in small babies and young children shouldbe treated with caution and the doctor will be happy to advise aboutthis over the telephone. Re-hydration sachets certainly prevent many babies and youngsters becoming dehydrated and requiring hospitaladmission.
Backache
Very common. Usually due to strain or overuse of the back muscles. Will usually respond to rest, lying on a firm surface. If the pain is feltin the legs, and especially if you develop difficulty passing urine, then consult the doctor as soon as possible
Chicken Pox. Mumps. Measles & Rubella (German Measles)
These are usually self-limiting viral illnesses which usually
12
cause minor symptoms in children. We usually recommend Paracetamol (Calpol) for any temperature and plenty fluids
Burns & Scalds
Apply large quantities of cold water to the affected area as soon as possible and maintain this for several minutes. This will helpthe pain and prevent damage to the skin. If the skin is unbrokenbut blistered apply a loose, dry dressing. If the burn is large orthe skin broken, consult the doctor or nurse as soon as possible. Do NOT apply any cream or ointment.
