Sisters of St Peter Claver Visit

S6 were visited by the Sisters of St Peter Claver. Sr Stacey and Sr Moica who live in the community in Bellshill shared their vocation stories and gave the pupils a valuable insight into religious life. The sisters devote their life to supporting the mission of the Church and keeping Christ the Redeemer at the centre of everything they do. We may see more of the Sisters as they were very impressed with Snapdragon and may become lunching regulars.

This is part of a programme of speakers organised for S6 including SCIAF, SSVfP, Salesians and Let The Children Live. More information will be shared as they visit.

Sky Academy

Cardinal Newman XL and Enterprise classes recently took part in the initia-tive Sky Academy, going behind the scenes at Sky to create their very own TV report. The group’s report focused on the problems young people have with money. The pupils got to try different roles such as reporters, cameramen, editors and many more. This was an extremely valuable, rewarding experi-ence allowing pupils to experience working in the media.

SEET Competition

The Cardinal Newman High School group of 4 S3 pupils, Louise McCann, Holly McIntyre, Jennifer Wardale and Kelsey Wilson, are participating in the SEET competition has passed to the next phase of the Our Europe competition. They will be going to a Day Workshop in the Society M (Citizen M Hoel) in Glasgow. There they will firlm their short story about Scottish people being European. After that, they will attend a Showcse and an Award Veremony on Monday 21 March, in the Scottish Parliament, in Edinburgh. Our bets wishes to our girls, but they already deserve our congratulations for having arrived so far.

Home Economics

Miss Robertson and Mrs Muir have been running an Easter Bakery Club. The pupils made and decorated Easter cupcakes, they tasted excellent and were beautifully designed.

Battle of the Bands—Violet

Our school band “Violet” made history by becoming the first band from Car-dinal Newman to win 1st prize at the NLC battle of The Bands competition. The band, Lucy Moore, Anne Clare Murray, Rianne Downey, Mary Jeanette Batucan, Rebecca Chanice Smith and Jodie Mullen rocked the audience with their distinctive 50s sound. The band performed the song “Tainted Love” in the style of Imelda May and their own composition titled “Mr Man”. Jodie Mullen also won £100 for bet individual performance. Well done girls! Mr McLaughlin.

Yorkhill Hospital

S6 pupil Hannah McCulloch, House Captain for Kentigern, has raised nearly £1000 for Yorkhill Hospital by completing the Killiecrankie bunjee jump from a bridge in Perth. A very brave and kind act— Well done.

Baby Bank Collection

Mrs Callaghan and some very kind S2 girls are collecting money and baby goods to donate to this very important cause. This charity is run by vol-unteers and provides a vital service to families struggling to make ends meet. As you do your weekly shop perhaps you could buy and donate just one item to help ensure some North Lanarkshire babies have a better start in life. Thank you to the people who have so far donated to the Ba-by Bank Collection. This worthwhile cause was our S2 RE focus during the month of March .

Life on other Planets

S1 Science pupils confidently presented their research findings on wheth-er there could be life on other planets. Well done to all groups. Their presentations were peer marked and the results will be shared during the next lesson.

S3 Trip to Dynamic Earth

On Thursday 24 March S3 Geographers will visit Dynamic Earth as part of their topic on Environmental Hazards. This trip will enhance pupils' un-derstanding of volcanoes, earthquakes and tropical storms and help them to see these 'natural hazards' as Global Issues and develop an informed view on how people can best deal with these events.

Geobus: St Andrew's University

On Friday 22 April 2016 we are very fortunate that the 'Geobus' is visiting Social Studies. The Geobus is an outreach project run by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews. We have already made a few advance bookings for the Geobus to work with next year’s S1 Social Subjects classes, National 4/5 classes and Higher Ge-ography classes.

S2 Trip to Whitelees

S2 Geographers spent the day at Whitelees Wind Farm on Thursday 3rd March. They had a great day learning about the Wind Farm, renewable energy and also conducted an investigation into the most efficient wind turbine design.Pupils were a credit to themselves, their families and the school and staff at the wind farm were impressed pupils' enthusiasm and participation in all aspects of the day - well done to all pupils who attended the trip!

Hobby Craft Exhibition

On Friday 4 March, 14 S1-S5 pupils visited the SECC, Glasgow for the Stitching and Sewing Show. Our pupils experienced three exhibitions: The Quilting, Em-broidery and the “Yarnia” Exhibition from Canada which displayed life-sized knitted scenes from “The Chronicles of Narnia” and CS Lewis’s “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”. Pupils also took an active part in workshops trying out new skills in Decopatch and Glitter Glue techniques. One of our S4 pupils, Demi Monteith, was asked to model for the Japanese Costume Lecture. Demi modelled a hand painted silk traditional wedding Kimono. The lecture which took around an hour was watched by our pupils and an audience of around 50 of the general public. Every pupil “really enjoyed the trip and were truly inspired by everything they saw” Stephanie Duffy (S4) said “it was an amazing experi-ence” (S2) Murron Thomson and (S4) Emily Dobbin were both “inspired by the patience of the demonstrators who created and produced beautiful items”, while Jennifer Borden (S5) was “really inspired by the patchwork and quilting as was (S1) Ross Casey”. Pupils are looking forward to trying out patchwork and quilting, decopatch and glitter glue panels at our Busy Bee Hand Embroidery Club on return to school. Our pupils are looking forward to next year when the exhi-bition returns in March. The only thing that could have improved the trip was they would all have loved to stay longer. Jennifer Borden summarized the trip in 3 words: Fabulous! Extraordinary! Magnificent!.

NXP Office Visit

Five Higher Computing pupils recently accompanied Mr Sloan on an interactive/educational visit to NXP offices in East Kilbride. The half day event was filled with lots of exciting modern technology such as body scanners, wearable technology, smartphone controlled locking systems and smartcar tech. The day was complet-ed with a hands-on programming session using the new 'BBC Microbit' computers -which should be coming to all S1 pupils at Cardinal Newman in the near future. The pupils really enjoyed themselves and gained so much from valuable onsite work experience.

S1 Football

Congratulations to the S1 boys’ football team who have reached the semi-final of the Lanarkshire Cup. The team will now take on Braidhurst HS in the semi-final and I am confident that we will the reach the final! The boys have worked very hard this year and have shown great resilience to bounce back from defeats in the league by grinding out victories in the cup. In addition to this determination, there have also been magnificent individual and team performances throughout the season. Keep up the good work!

Science Club

So far in Science Club S1 pupils have made (and eaten) homemade ice cream, set off water rockets and experimented with flammable materials. The Senior Sci-ence Ambassadors are doing a great job promoting the Sciences to junior pupils, keep up the good work!

Games Design Club

Miss Duncan has been running the Games Design club every Wednesday. Pupils from S1 to S3 are invited to come and learn how to design and create games and apps. The club is oversubscribed with eager pupils excited to learn new compu-ting skills.

S3 Business Management Easter Thoughs Enterprise Challenge

Three S3 Business Management classes have created three different Easter Enter-prise businesses. Pupils have designed their own Easter products after conducting market research to find out who their target market would be and the needs and wants of their customers. Pupils decided on the pricing of their products and on the promotion methods they wanted to use. Pupils faced fierce competition from the other S3 businesses. All three classes met their ultimate business ob-jective of maximising profit within the time limit given. Well done!

Health & Food Technology

Higher Health and Food Technology students visited Allied Bakeries at Springburn where they learned how theory is put into practice in the food industry. The stu-dents learned how new food products are developed, about and hygiene issues in the food industry, about mass production of food items and technological develop-ments in the food industry. This was a huge success and students were treated to a goody-bag. Many thanks to Allied Bakeries, in particular Kenny Dunn who made it all possible.

Fashion & Textiles S2 Textiles and Graphics classes have been working very hard on a variety of tex-tile items this term. Each of the classes are working on different items including fashionable tote bags, monster toys made from fleece and hair decorations. The next few weeks will see the completion of a Cardinal Newman Pennant. The De-partment are looking forward to attending Clyde college for some pupil workshops next term and pupils will keep you informed of future dates.

Netball - Congratulations to the S1 and Senior Netball teams who have made it through to the North Lanarkshire league finals. Both teams are due to play local rivals Braidhurst. Good luck girls.

Trampolining - Congratulations to those S1 pupils who competed in their first North Lanarkshire Trampoline Competition. The standard of performance was exceptionally high and we successfully secured 7th, 11th and 12th places out of over 30 competitors.

Cross Country - Well done to all those pupils S1-S6 who competed in this years North Lanarkshire Cross country. It was a beautiful day and conditions were great for running. Particular mention goes to Erin Speed from S1 who came 10th in the S1 Girls race, Kyle Stark who came 20th in the S3 Boys race, Joseph Clark 13th and Jamie Watt 14th in the Senior Boys race.

Political Literacy Group

A reminder to all pupils who are 16 and above that the Scottish Parliament elec-tion is on 5 May 2016. All pupils who are 16 and above are eligible to vote and they should bring their National Insurance number into school to register to vote during Homeroom. Alternatively, pupils can log onto gov.UK/register-to-vote from home to register to vote. Cardinal Newman High school ran a registra-tion week from 15/3/16 to 22/3/16 to get as many pupils registered as possible.

Well Done to Charlotte Kirkwood, Caitlin Donnelly and Caitlin Kilpatrick for rep-resenting Cardinal Newman High School at the recent Political Literacy event. Charlotte Kirkwood took part in a debate with other schools, proposing that the age to stand in elections should be reduced to 16. A fantastic day and a confi-dence building experience for the pupils!

Thank you to the following pupils and staff for helping create and run Cardinal Newman High School's first Political Literacy group. They have worked hard at ensuring that every pupil knows about the club and have played a huge part in getting pupils registered to vote. Well Done!

OUR EUROPE Competition

“What are the benefits of being European for a young Scottish person?” The main topic of this competition was set by the Scottish European Educational Trust (SEET) aimed at young students from all around Scotland.

Four S3 pupils Holly McIntyre, Louise McCann, Jennifer Wardale and Kelsey Wil-son, passed the preliminary phases of this competition, and got the opportunity to go to a Workshop in Glasgow, on Monday 14 March.

During their visit they had presentations from the project coordinator, and from Xchange Scotland, who talked about some exciting opportunities volunteering around Europe. They were given key advice on filming and editing from Glo Scotland

The girls then spent time filming and editing. It was an enjoyable and challeng-ing experience and the girls were delighted with their work—despite being wor-ried at first about not being able to film and edit everything on time.

Holly, Louise, Jennifer and Kelsey attended the Premiere and Award Ceremony on Monday 21 March, where they were able to view all the finished films.

An Easter Message from the Chaplaincy Desk

Romans 8:31 “What, then, shall we say in response to things? If God

is for us, who can be against us?”

I am sure you are all aware that the chaplaincy in Cardinal Newman High School contributes greatly to

the positive Catholic ethos in our school. The chaplaincy office is open Monday to Friday for pupils,

staff and parents. Anyone can come in and have a chat on any issues whether it is about religion or

not.

Many people say, “prayer is the key to every success.” Be-

cause Jesus Christ started with prayer and ended with prayer.

Prayer is the master key. Since Jesus is our model, we begin

the school day with a beautiful prayer and reflection prepared

by Mr Rance.

On Ash Wednesday, I celebrated Mass for all staff and was assisted by Dea-

con Mario. Attendance was high and all those present received their ashes.

The singing was led by the Music Department. The consistent contribution

of the music department to the successful work of the chaplaincy is com-

mendable.

We have celebrated Holy mass every day in the theatre throughout this Len-

ten season with encouraging numbers in attendance. The choir has also

contributed to the services singing Spanish religious songs each Thursday

during Holy Communion.

On March 7 the Sacrament of Reconciliation was held in the theatre at 1.45 for the whole school. The

Senior Leadership team led by Mr Ross successfully organised the pupils to attend confession. It may

be of interest to you to know that may pupils who were not Catholic came to talk to the priests during

the confession period. This is a clear witness that the school chaplaincy shows care for everyone in the

school no matter their religion or faith. Five Holy Ghost Fathers were present for the Sacrament of Rec-

onciliation and we were all treated to a nice lunch and refreshments.

I took part in the S3 annual retreat on March 16 2016 and it was a resounding success. A number of

pupils have now expressed their desire to be Lectors (readers during Mass) and I am now advising them

an they will soon be ready to take up the challenges involved.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making the work of the chaplaincy successful since my

arrival.

Fr. Thomas Wilberforce

CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH

SCHOOL

As an enhanced comprehen-sive school, we use the theme of enterprise to raise achieve-ment, build the self-confidence of pupils and en-hance teaching and learning in all areas. We use our status as an NLC enhanced comprehen-sive to improve facilities, wid-en pupil choice and introduce vocational courses, buy addi-tional equipment and fund additional staff. These reports highlight the ways in which our work as a school commu-nity of teachers, pupils and parents impact on the achievements of all pupils, all departments and our partner agencies. Both reports com-ment:

“Cardinal Newman High School is very successful in taking forward its vision of making a significant differ-

Princes Trust S3 XL Groups Update This term the Tuesday and Friday XL Groups have been taking part in an Arts and Employability project. Both groups attended a Kickstart event at Coatbridge College where they got to try out different art forms as potential projects. The groups tried out special effects make-up, Reeltime Music, shadow play and animation. Each group then chose which art form they were going to do a project on. The Tues-day group chose Animation and the Friday group chose Reeltime Music. Both projects will be show-cased at an event in Coatbridge College at the end of April

S3 XL – Tuesday Group

After choosing to make a short animation film, the group have been busy working as a team, learning how to use technology to create the animation, creating the scenery and characters for the film, plan-ning and writing a script, and filming the project from start to finish. At the end of the project the group will have created an animation film. The group worked with a Scottish animator, Jim Stirk from Animation Jam, to learn the techniques and skills necessary to complete the project. The film is set in our very own animated Cardinal Newman High School which has been taken over by Zombies!! The group are working very well together and Mrs Skea, Mrs Hamilton and Lisa are so impressed with all the new skills the group are demonstrating and can’t wait to see the finished product!

S3 XL – Friday Group

The S3 Friday group have been busy planning, rehearsing and shooting a music video with the fantastic guys from Reeltime Music. The group chose the song ‘Run Away Baby’ by Bruno Mars and came up with a brilliant idea for the video, of pupils pranking teachers and then running away. The group re-hearsed the song and action for the video as well as designing the cover art in advance. On the day Reeltime taught some of the pupils to play drums, keyboard and guitar for the backing track and other pupils got trained in camera operation, directing and acting.

The group did a fantastic job and Miss Reilly and Ms Skea are extremely proud of their efforts. Thanks

are due to the fabulous Mr Smith from English who allowed himself to be ‘custard pied’ and Miss Dun-

can from IT who did a spectacular fall after being hit by a huge book!
