Welcome to our 24th show at this the splendid South of England Showground. Once again our hard working team of volunteers have been working tirelessly for the past year to put this extravaganza together for your enjoyment. We would urge you to look at the map of the show and maybe visit some areas you would not normally look at to appreciate the diversity of what we have on show this year.

In conjunction with many other events, some of our sections are showing special Diamond Jubilee displays. Please look out for these, we would especially mention the Horsham Historics Display Tent in the centre of the show, our Cycles section in the Abergavenny Building and the Scale Model Display by IPMS Mid-Sussex which is upstairs in the Norfolk Building.

As you look around the show, you will see the best engineering from the UK and around the world. Please enjoy these and have a chat with the owners but please do not touch or enter any roped off areas for your own safety. As well as enjoying the displays and exhibits, we hope you find time to look around our trade, craft and auto jumble sections. Without their continued support we would find it very difficult to finance this event. Please also do not forget to feed and water the “inner person” during your visit. We have a wide variety of food caterers who will be pleased to sell you everything from an ice cream to fish and chips or if you prefer we have two specialist bars in the central area. CAMRA are once again running our Real Ale festival in the main marquee with a large selection of local ales. For those that prefer a more lively drink then we have a dedicated lager bar close by in the trade section.

We are continuing to add attractions for children. Alongside our popular Fun Fair presented by the Harris family we have the return of Diggerland and the miniature steam railway. This year we have also added “Lennie the Land Train” to make it easier to see the whole site. Please look out for the stops near the public entrance gate and adjacent to Diggerland.

Without our dedicated team of volunteers this show would not happen and I’d like to personally thank each of them for their contribution to the event. We hope that all their hard work is repaid , you enjoy your visit today and we look forward to welcoming you back in future years.

THE CRAFT MARQUEE

Don’t miss this opportunity to buy from a wide variety of stalls bearing collectables and hand produced crafts. If you are looking for a unique gift idea you may find just what you are looking for here, hopefully there is something to suit every taste and pocket. Products on offer range from tasty treats supplied by Oxford Bakery and Charles Smith our fudge-maker to a plethora of pictures, prints, records, greeting cards, and toys. Skin products, clothes, and jewellery are in abundance, together with a variety of accessories such as scarves and handbags. You’ll also find hand painted wood, glass, and ceramics. Talking of ceramics, while in the marquee, a visit to George Walter and his ‘Vintage Pottery’ is a must. George has attended our show for well over 20 years and is always happy to personalise his work to make it stand out. George established his Essex based business more than 36 years ago and says he makes the largest collection of ceramic vehicles worldwide. Each model is handcrafted and coloured by George, and can be personalised with names or number plates. The wide range of Classic Vehicles includes trucks, vans, cars, fun fair, and circus transport. New this year, Vintage Pottery is introducing an Olympic range including Minis, Morris Minors, A30s, and ‘Trotter’ vans. So if you are a collector, or are looking for something different as a unique gift for that extra special occasion, such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, visit the marquee, and have a chat with George. He is sure to be able to help you. You can’t miss him – here he is pictured with one of his masterpieces.

Sussex Magneto Restorations has been a long time in the making!! Having been brought up around Vintage Vehicles of all shapes and makes I have always had an interest in anything mechanical and even more so in anything old and mechanical! My first experience in magnetos was at about the age of 8 and on the wrong end of the lead but even then I wanted to know what had made me jump so much and how did it work!! Over the years and having been on the starting handle of many stubborn to start engines I have stripped and repaired a good few magnetos and always been fascinated by what makes that spark or sometimes not!! A few years ago I knew of a local chap who had been repairing a lot of magnetos and was looking to sell all his tools, spares and test equipment and also a little knowledge to get someone started and carry on the work he had begun. I thought why not!! That was 4 years ago and I have been repairing restoring and setting up magnetos for friends and friends of friends and to date have met a lot of interesting and knowledgeable people all through my business, even sending some of my work abroad! So here it is Sussex Magneto Restorations I can do all types of work from test and repair, to full restoration of any make of magneto for any vehicle.

A profile of Harveys Sussex’s oldest independent brewery – founded 1790 The Harvey name has long been associated with the supply of beers wines and spirits to the people of Sussex. Records dating from 1794 recall the delivery of Old Red Port, Sherry and Claret within a twenty mile radius of the medieval town of Lewes. The Bridge Wharf Brewery was established by John Harvey (1783-1862) in the artisan’s quarter of the County Town and remains today by the River Ouse overlooking Cliffe Bridge. The original Georgian Brewery was partially rebuilt in 1880. The Tower and Brew House date from this period and are a beautiful example of a Victorian country brewery. Capacity was doubled in the mid 1980’s when a second brewing line was installed. The building to house this new plant was added to the front of the original Tower in exactly the same Victorian Gothic style with details accurate down to the arched ironwork windows. Harveys remains a local independent family owned company with the seventh generation descendants of John Harvey involved in managing the business. Harveys Beers Harveys retains the unique flavour of their beers by selecting the finest quality Pale and Mild malts, local Kent and Sussex hops, and brewing with their own fresh spring water and yeast strain. The result is a range of traditional beers that have delighted local drinkers for generations. In fact, their flagship beer ‘Sussex Best Bitter’ has won CAMRA’s coveted ‘Champion Best Bitter of Britain’ award two years running in 2005 and 2006. Community and environmental focus Harveys maintains Sussex’s brewing heritage by a careful regard for the local environment. They source their raw materials from local growers, restrict deliveries to a 60-mile radius, feed spent grain to local dairy herds, send spent hops to fertilise local market gardens and refill returnable casks and bottles. In 1996 Harveys won Sussex’s Green Business award, the company continued to build on this achievement when in 2004 it won the S.E.D.A (South East England Development Agency) Sustainable Business Award as the 'Greenest' Business between Oxford & Dover.

Welcome to the Abergavenny & the Cycle

section. Our theme for 2012 follows the country's celebration of Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Our Theme is "By Royal Appointment". Since the Dawn of Cycling and before the advent of the Motorcar, cycling was taken up by the Royalty & well-to-do as well the lower classes. Many companies vied for the R o y a l W a r r a n t . Kings, Queens, Princes, Crown Princes, and Emperors all had their Marques. Great B r i t a i n ' s C y c l i n g Manufacturers led the way. See how many makes there were in this field & look at how many Car Manufacturers started life as cycle makers! Sadly the Cycle & Car makers have gone, but the legacy lives on! Chris Wright also Celebrates Cycling Proficiency with his display, which we’re sure you children (both young & old), will enjoy. Don't miss the rest of the collection, which spans the age of Cycling. We do hope you will linger and feel free to ask any questions, your Cycling Marshals:

Preserving Military Vehicles The military were one of the first to use vehicles to support the fighting troops. Early examples of trials were to use steam engines to pull large artillery pieces to replace horse transport and speed the process. The real change arrived with the development of reliable internal combustion engines. These early engines were nearly all petrol, a fuel that has been used continuously since. Rapid expansion of the use of mechanical transport was hastened during World War One which also saw the introduction and development of the tank as a fighting vehicle alongside armoured cars. Despite this a large number of horses were still used in both

world wars. They say that each action has an equal and opposite reaction. In the military field this is certainly true, larger tanks = larger anti-tank guns, aircraft = anti-aircraft guns. Fast moving armoured columns then need mechanised infantry to accompany them. This all leads to the development of vehicles to support them. Very few people have the resources to restore and exhibit fighting vehicles such as tanks, self-propelled artillery and the like. Most people tend to preserve wheeled vehicles which can include utility vehicles, troop transport, material

transport, artillery limbers, recovery vehicles, armoured cars and armoured personnel carriers. The most well known utility vehicles in the UK are the ubiquitous Jeep built during WWII and its post war replacement the Land Rover which is still in production more than 50 years after it was first introduced. Today you can still buy any part for a Jeep or Land Rover to keep them operational. Britain did build its own range of utility vehicles during WWII but the volumes were never huge. We move up the scale from these vehicles to the section vehicles with a load capacity of 10 CWT, 1 Ton or 30CWT up of course to the larger vehicles that can take 10 or twenty ton loads. These can then be followed by the specialist vehicles for towing artillery or recovering broken down vehicles. This article is too short to list every type of vehicle but please have a walk around our military section to see some specialist vehicles.

Restoring and maintaining a military vehicle is similar to doing the same with a classic car or commercial vehicle with some noteable exceptions. Firstly we have the problem of interference from the ignition system on petrol vehicles so these are heavily shielded. This can make it difficult to see any problems and to get spares or replacements. Many military vehicles also work on 24V dc systems which again can cause some difficulties. Sometimes, modern equivalents have to be used to keep the vehicle in a road worthy condition. Many military vehicles are four wheel drive which is excellent on muddy rally fields but makes it a bit more difficult to maintain compared to your classic car. Tyre sizes

can also be a problem with these vehicles as the military often chose sizes to give the best off road performance for the vehicle which do not necessarily meet civilian sizes. All the time military surplus stock is available this poses little problems but when they dry up can cause significant difficulties and costs. We mentioned earlier, that many military vehicles are petrol powered. This is a good reliable source of energy but as the vehicles get larger, the fuel consumption increases beyond a reasonable level for the private individual. Many ex-military vehicles that passed into civilian use had their petrol engines replaced with a more economical diesel engine. A case in point is the Scammell Explorer Medium Wheeled Recovery Vehicle, a 14 ton six wheel drive vehicle with a petrol engine fitted from new. The petrol engine returned 3 to 4 miles per gallon running empty and as low as a mile per gallon when towing a stranded vehicle. In civilian use, this engine is replaced by a diesel unit giving 8-10 miles per gallon in all conditions. Another challenge with preserving military vehicles is that many of them use canvas rather than solid bodies to cover the load or seating area. This gives great flexibility in service but can be rather tiresome to maintain. If the vehicle is kept inside this becomes easier but not everybody has these facilities so you have to regularly treat the canvas to keep it in good condition. These are some of the challenges with restoring and preserving military vehicles. We hope this insight is useful. Please do not hesitate to ask the owners at the show about their particular challenges but do not touch the exhibits unless invited to.

Scale Model Show organised by IPMS Mid-Sussex

Scale model making is the art of reproducing a particular prototype in a smaller scale. Depending on the size of the original these scales can range from 1/12th (i.e. 1inch to the foot) to 1/400th or smaller. IPMS stands for the International Plastic Model Society and although based in the UK has associate branches throughout the world. The display organised here today will cover a wide range of subjects including Aircraft, Ships, Lorries and military fighting vehicles. A special theme within the display will be vehicles and aircraft in service in 1952 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. We hope you enjoy looking at these models and perhaps it might inspire you to start making your own models. IPMS has over 50 branches in the UK and our Mid-Sussex Branch meets at the community in Southwick, West Sussex on a Thursday evening which operates on a four weekly cycle. For more details and the dates of the next meeting please visit http://www.ipmsmidsussex.org.uk. There will always be a friendly face and welcome for you at these meetings.

Section G: Micro Cars Marshal: David Carrington After the war there was a great demand for powered transport coupled with shortages of fuel and raw materials such as steel. Lawrie Bond designed a small three wheeled car and took his design to Sharps Commercials in Preston who agreed to manufacture it and the first Bond Minicar was born in 1947. The Mark A had two seats and open topped bodywork made largely of aluminium. The single front wheel was driven by a 122cc Villiers two-stroke engine mounted on the front suspension so that it turned with the steering. Only the rear wheels were braked, there was no rear springing, and the single windscreen wiper was operated by hand. The Mark B which externally resembled the Mark A - Improvements were made to the steering and rear suspension was added The Mark B was followed by the Marks C and D. These cars featured a larger body and a 197cc engine. The Marks C and D where available in two and four seat versions, and as convertible or hardtop. A single door was fitted to the passenger side. The next major development was the Mark E which later spawned the Marks F and G. These cars were much more car like, but kept many of the traditions pioneered by the earlier cars. The Bond Owners club is one of the longest running car clubs in the U.K. having formed in 1951 and certainly THE oldest club for vehicles that are now known as "Micro-cars". Within the club every model of Bond Minicar is represented: Mark A to Mark G. Here are a few of the cars from across the UK. Most of the cars here were restored by their owners from complete wrecks.

SITE FACILITIES & GENERAL INFORMATION

The organisers would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters who help make

this show possible.

Would you like to become involved with the Ardingly Vintage and Classic Vehicle Show?

The show is run by a dedicated and dynamic group of people who put in a lot of time and effort for the love of the show. As with any group of this type there comes a time when our volunteers say that they can no longer continue to help. We are looking for volunteers to replace some long standing devotees who for various reasons have to hang up the towel this year and leave the show team. Are you interested in helping? Whether it be giving a few hours of help for the duration of the actual show itself or a more involved role in running or helping to run a section, attending the regular team meetings, where possible, and subsequently dealing with the paperwork etc, we would like to hear from you. We are also looking for people with good administration skills to help shoulder some of the hidden burdens and a public relations officer to promote the show more widely. So if you would like to help, even if only by putting up posters or distributing leaflets at appropriate times please get in touch. You can contact us is in any of the following ways: Post: Ardingly VCV Show, PO Box 649, Haywards Heath, RH16 9AL Email: [email protected] Via the website: www.ardinglyvcvshow.org.uk

ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

At around 2.30pm on Sunday there will be a flying display over the northern edge of the showground.

(I.E. Roughly over Blue Car Park)

This year quite possibly sees one of t h e l a r g e s t g a t h e r i n g s o f h o r t i c u l t u r a l machinery in this country ranging from hand tools to pedestrian and ride on machinery. We are also celebrating thirty years of the Hall and Duck trust who have quite possibly the largest selection of vintage lawn mowers in this country. They have supported this event every year since before it was at the South of England Showground and I feel very privileged that Andrew Hall will be assisting with commentary of all of our machines in the arena event. We also have the first gathering of Wheelhorse garden tractors in this country with over t w e n t y f i v e machines attending. You will see many makes of machines on display and please feel free to ask questions but please do not touch as many hours of p a i n s t a k i n g restoration goes into them. And on a final note I would like to dedicate this year’s section to Kenny Folland who was a regular exhibitor with his Ransomes crawler but who sadly passed away earlier this year. H o w e v e r h i s machine will be on show with his very good friend Mr John Ealson. Thank you, Steve Denness section marshal, and my helpers Paul & Wendy Mackellow and Chris Sutton.

The Kent Spitfire TA805 Built at the Supermarine works at Castle Bromwich late in 1944, TA805 spent t ime a t a maintenance unit then joined 183 (Gold Coast) Squadron at Chilbolton in June 1945, before later being passed to 234 squadron where it was part of a wing of 24 Squadrons led by legendary Battle of Britain ace Wing Commander Roland Beamont. The wing flew the Battle of Britain commemoration flight over London in September 1945 and it is highly possible that TA805 was one of the aircraft taking part. In 1949 the aircraft was struck off charge by the RAF and sold to the South African Air Force, later being scrapped. Found in a Cape Town scrap yard many years later, its provenance was recognised and the remains shipped back to England for a full restoration to flying condition, a process that took from 1992 until 2005. Today named Spirit of Kent, it flies as a memorial to the many Spitfire pilots lost on operations and also in honour of the only English county to pay for an entire squadron of Spitfires.

Section O: Outdoor Models & Collections Marshal: Joyce Janes O01: The centrepiece of the display is a milk pram built by Day and Day of Clapton, East London. These were a common sight from 1851 to the 1920s. The other items on the display are part of a collection that has been collected over the years and is still growing. O17: 1/16th and 1/32nd Scale Model Tractors. The 1/32nd ones are made and painted by Eric, from white metal kits and the larger 1/16th models have been collected over the years, and are mainly Limited Editions. O23: The model of Chipperfield’s Circus started after seeing the sale of ‘Billy Smart’s Circus’ in the February of 1986. The layout started with the purchase of the crane truck and one beast wagon. Like Topsy it has grown to the large 10’ x 6’ model you see today. The large 4 pole big top and all lorries and trailers are modelled from photos to try and get them correct, colour is red with blue edging and blue lettering.

Have you seen Punch & Judy? Located towards the end of the Bygones nearest blue gate (main public gate). This is also near to one of the stops for our new attraction, Lenny The Land Train. The other stop being beside Diggerland, next to the arena and tractors.

Horsham Historics Horsham Historics Preservation Society is a Club dedicated to keeping the past remembered and preserved.

As you wander around this show to day, many memories will be jogged. In this day and age it does not take long for something to become ‘out of date’ or ‘obsolete’. This is your cue. How about starting a collection? You will amaze yourself at the pleasure of taking up a new interest or hobby. Just look in the Austin 7 Grocer’s Van on display in our marquee and see the collection within, it is always changing. Perhaps this will give you inspiration. We do not have to go back in years either. With this being our Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year many Coronation Treasures are being displayed again. 1953 manufactured bicycles are on display in the Cycle Section in the Abergavenny Building. Start your Collection now of 2012 Diamond Jubilee memorabilia. Of course, anything with wheels of an older age need to be preserved, and you will see all sorts of examples on display this weekend, some moving, some stationary. Attention to detail is very important, this being obvious in the Military Section where many of the exhibitors dress up in period uniform and display collections and dioramas associated with their exhibits. Stationary Engines are always popular for restoration and need not be too big either. Nothing is nicer than seeing a preserved engine running at the Show demonstrating the work for which it was originally made. These are just some of the things that come under the mantle of our Preservation Society. Our Members are very active and are only too pleased to pass on information and advice. The Club meets throughout the year with monthly Meetings held on the third Wednesday of each month. Over the Winter these are held in the Parish Hall in Handcross. Handcross is on the route used by the Pioneer Motorcycle Run, the Commercial Vehicle Run and the Veteran Car Run, each of which has some of our Members taking part. The Meetings vary, with Illustrated Talks, Film Shows, Collections and Socials. Summer Meetings can be out and about to give older vehicles a run, with a superb BBQ and Vintage Vehicle Evening at the end of the season. Members also exhibit at various Model Shows throughout the year. Information about these and other Shows and Events can be found in the Diary Dates of the colourful monthly Newsletter along with various articles, information and pictures. Come and visit the HH Marquee and see the Special Exhibits on display and find out more about our Club. Members in the Marquee are mines of information who will be only too pleased to talk to you and perhaps get you to join our worthy Club. Make the most of the Show Special Membership Offer. If you wish to join at a later date please contact our Membership Secretary Elaine Lewis, PO Box 2056, Lancing, BN15 9WB or for further information check our Website at www.horshamhistorics.org.uk ENJOY THE SHOW

T h e s t a t i on a r y engine over the years has carried out many tasks that many people take for granted, from running line shafting in factories to powering w a t e r p u m p s , generating electricity and all sorts of other machinery used on farms. This year sees all sorts of engines from over the years from the large to the small carrying out some of the many tasks they were designed for. Please admire the many hours of painstaking work that has been put in to these engines as many of the parts are no longer available and have to be made by the exhibitors or sourced from all over the world. Please feel free to take the time to have a chat with the exhibitors and ask them about their restorations and their experiences whilst restoring them . Enjoy. Tony Peirce, section marshal.

R04: Built by owner over a 10 year period in home workshop, including all pattern making (105 in total). First steaming in 2010. Weight 2.8 tons. Modelled on full size McLaren ‘Boadicea’, can b e c o n v e r t e d t o showman’s style engine, then modelled on Edwin Corrigan’s ‘Gigantic’. R17: Man of Kent is a 4 1/2 inch scale model of a New Zealand Burrell. It was built on 04/05/2001 by the late Mr R Gerry of Alton Hants. It is understood the reason it is a New Zealand Burrell is because it has a larger firebox than the normal engine so it can burn wood or coal. The Man of Kent was purchased by the current owner in 2010. R19: The engine was built over the period 2000-2006 by the exhibitor from a kit of parts supplied by ModelWorks. While the parts were supplied machined they were in the state they ‘fell from the machine’ and had to be finished using hand tools and painted. Even with the help of the kit the engine took around 100 hours to complete. The engine was first steamed in March 2006 and has attended several rallies primarily in the South East. The engine earned its name, ‘Little Beastie’, when it showered the driver with sooty water. R22: This is a design by the late John Haining, it is based on an original 1927

S02: Please note that this engine is 100 years old this year. S05: Built in 1910 and supplied to C J S Waters at Sixpenny Handley in Dorset. Commandeered by the War Department in 1916 for foraging (Hence it’s name). First registered in 1920 MO 2015 when it went to Boxford in Berkshire. It had three owners in Suffolk during the 1960s and appeared on Blue

Peter sometime in the 1970s. It went to various other countries from the 1970s until December 2010 when it was purchased from Keith Rayner at St Neots in Cambridgeshire by the present owners Bob & Rosemary Newman and brought back to Hampshire. S06: If you remember this engine broke its back axle in the Arena Parade last year, which led to a full scale recovery of the engine. The engine has had a new axle made and fitted. We extend a warm welcome and are pleased to see this engine back this year. S08: Built in 1920 for Pat Collins, the famous showman from the Midlands, used for haulage and generating for his rides until 1956. Rebuilt by Bicknalls, owners & friends in 2002. Most years it travels to rallies in Europe. S09: Saw duties on the fair for R Edwards and Son travelling with their set of Golden Gallopers.

The Historic Commercial Vehicle Society 51st London to Brighton Run 2012 Once again the rally season is upon us and Sunday 6th May saw the 51st London to Brighton Run. We had two vehicles accepted for the run, but due to unforeseen circumstances only the Thornycroft was able to attend this year. No major work was needed this year on the Thornycroft just a case of changing the oil and checking the lorry over and a good clean. The lorry is a 1934 Thornycroft AC/FB4 which was used by Truman, Hanbury and Buxton brewers in London.

My Grandfather purchased the lorry in 1969 in a derelict condition and rebuilt it over 2 years, the engine and bodywork are 90% original and it has been participating in the London to Brighton regularly since 1972, firstly driven by my Grandfather and then by other family members. I myself took part in the runs as a young boy and spent many an hour helping to clean and polish the vehicle, I have maintained and driven the vehicle for the past 16 years. The plan was to travel up to Crystal Palace on the Saturday afternoon, so after a wet start to the day we decided to leave around tea time travelling up the M23 and across the M25, which was an interesting experience,

trying to change lanes when everyone else is doing in excess of 50 mph. That said we made good time. We usually travel up early Sunday morning when the roads are empty, so Purley Way and onto Streatham Common was a challenge at 7.30pm on a Saturday evening, we finally arrived at Crystal Palace around 8pm and after parking up we set up camp for the night, also chatting to various passers-by and fellow exhibitors one of which had travelled from Norway to take part. We awoke at 5.30 on Sunday morning to the sound of the Searle family leaving with their traction engines and light rain. After several cups of tea the rain had eased off so we packed up and drove round to the start where we signed in and had a look at the other vehicles. We left Crystal Palace at 7.30 and joined onto some other vehicles on their way to Crawley, even this early it was nice to see good support from the members of public waving and clapping as we passed. We arrived at the halfway halt at Broadfield Stadium about 8.45, we decided to make the most of the quiet roads so only had a brief stop - tea for us and a top up of water for the lorry. Again there was plenty of support as we passed through Handcross, Cuckfield and Burgess Hill, Clayton Hill saw the Horsham Historics Crew ready to assist any stricken vehicles as we passed by, we even had a clear run down the last bit of the A23 and onto Madeira Drive, Brighton. This part of the journey is normally a nightmare as the lorry gets very hot along with cars pulling in and out in front, not appreciating that our brakes aren't that sharp. With the end in sight and the weather brighter, we pulled onto the seafront and crossed the finish line at 10.15, so the journey took us 2hrs 45 minutes to complete and we were 6th to arrive. Although not a race it was the best we have made, which was very pleasing. We parked just inside the finish line and then enjoyed watching all the other exhibitors passing by. We spent a wonderful afternoon viewing all the vehicles that had finished the run and chatting to others and finally leaving for home around tea time. A long but hugely enjoyable day once again, a 120 mile round trip and the lorry performed perfectly again. Alan Watts
