MS ACCESS: A Database

Objectives:

Describe database and explain its history and uses.

Explain the purpose of a database, kinds and types

Explain the qualities of good database information and characteristics of a well-designed database.

What is database?

• A database is a collection of organized information from which pieces of data can be easily and quickly accessed in a manner understood by a computer program.

• Examples: list of groceries to buy books to borrow from the library list of classmates telephone directory

Purpose of a database

• A database is information that a person needs in his personal, business, social and religious life and the power and purpose of information is not only in collecting and finding them but more importantly in using them.

Examples of Everyday life Databases

• Entity – is the term given to the category of information in database.

• Examples: car dealer – clients, cars and salesmen

• Bookstore – books, authors and publishers• School – students, faculty and classes• Mall – customers, stores, branches and

contractors

Kinds of Databases

• Structured database – information is arranged in uniform format.

• examples: list of persons born in a country medical database of patient’s data

• Free-form database – It is a loose collection of information, such as those you will find on the World Wide Web.

• example: collection of documents in the computer made from several programs.

Types of databases

• Operational database – is a dynamic database that is used by any organization in its day to day operation.

• example: inventory database

Types of databases

• Analytical database – is a static database wherein data is rarely modified.

• This database is often used to store and track historical data to make long term projections and analysis.

• example: global temperature to determine the effects of global warming in certain areas for a period of time.

Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)

• Relational Database Management System - is designed to create, maintain, manipulate, modify and delete information in a relational database.

Qualities of Good Database Information

• 1. Accurate information• 2. Organized information• 3. Timely information• 4. Verifiable information• 5. Accessible information• 6. Economical information• 7. Useful information
