Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn,

remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings.

Take A Summer

Vacation...with God

by Maggie Cong-Huyen

T he summer season marks the end of a school year and the beginning of a

much-an cipated long break for many school-aged children. As a working

"grown up," it's been many years since the last me I enjoyed the pleasure of a two-month vaca on. I am a bit envious

to hear about the summer plans of my co-workers' children, consis ng of camp getaways, weekday a ernoons in the park,

and unprofitable lemonade stands.

I also miss summer family vaca ons, which have become more challenging to coordinate as the years go by due to distance,

different work schedules, illness, or when other life circumstances intervene.

For all of us who have exceeded the age limit for carefree summers--par cularly anyone who needs to work full- me during

this warmer season--I invite you to join me in taking a break this summer to plan a vaca on with God.

What would it mean for you to go on a vaca on with God?

Perhaps you can plan to meet Him somewhere you've always wanted to visit--a quaint monastery, a botanical garden, a

church in another town, or another curiosity-inspiring locale.

Or if you already have a vaca on lined up, perhaps you can take Him along with you. God is a well-equipped navigator when

you need to be directed toward pa ence and gra tude during an extended road trip or a long wait at the airport.

Or you might opt for a stayca on where you can retreat with Him in a familiar place. A nearby des na on such as your

backyard, the library, or a park can provide the possibility of rediscovering a comfortable place close to home.

There are endless possibili es for how you can take a vaca on with God. Research has shown that planning and an cipa ng a

trip can o en bring you more happiness than taking the trip itself. I challenge you to plan AND take a vaca on with God this

summer--for an a ernoon, a weekend, or a longer break if you are fortunate to have the me.

Soon enough, summer will end and all the kids will return to school. And when summer makes way for fall, I believe that the

new season should merit another special me with God.

I'll leave you with the poem that inspired this reflec on, which Bishop Robert Morneau recited by heart during Catholics on

Call last summer.

Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn,

a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter.

If your mind isn't clouded by unnecessary things,

this is the best season of your life. www.catholics oncall.org

This appeal is intended to inspire missionary discipleship in our communi es here at home. Your prayers and financial support are most needed. Please be generous!

Young Catholics will Quench their Thirst this Summer at THEOLOGY ON TAP events throughout the City and Suburbs

“Theology on Tap originated in our Archdiocese as a gathering of young people in social se ngs to discuss our faith,” said Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago. “I wholeheartedly support such opportuni es for dialogue, which these events

make possible as they foster growth and understanding for all.” Theology on Tap is designed to be a casual and welcoming se ng for young adults to connect with their peers and discuss topics relevant to understanding and deepening their Catholic faith. The program originated in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1981 as a speaker and conversa on series for Catholics in their 20s and 30s, married or single, with mee ngs in bars, restaurants, coffeehouses and church basements, o en with liba ons available. Over the years, it expanded to more than 40 dioceses across the country and worldwide. This year, the Young Adult Ministry of the Archdiocese of Chicago is introducing a new model where parishes will work in teams rather than each parish managing its own Theology on Tap program. Weekly events will engage young people and their faith journeys on three levels, or taps. They will be invited to grow the Catholic community by reaching out to those who may not regularly a end church or who may need more faith forma on; to learn and develop upon an already ac ve faith; and to offer opportuni es for community service to put faith into ac on. “Theology on Tap is a great way to get young people more involved in their Catholic community,” said Fr. Peter Wojcik, codirector of the Department of Parish Vitality and Mission. “Our goal is to help young people connect and develop their faith and to live it daily. Theology on Tap also provides an opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends.” For loca on and dates of upcoming Theology on Tap sessions, please visit pvm.archchicago.org/theology-on-tap/loca ons

Catholic Chari es partners with Meals on Wheels America to provide a noon me meal for those who are homebound or unable to prepare their own food due to physical or mental difficul es. Many of our Meals-on-Wheels clients see only one person per day—our volunteers. Many of them would be unable to live independently without home-delivered meals. Volunteers are needed throughout Lake County, but the need is greatest right now in Fox Lake, Wauconda, and Mundelein. This is a great role for a group or individual who has a few hours once a week or once a month. Subs tute and seasonal volunteers are needed as well! For more informa on, please visit www.volunterbridge.com or contact Sue Fowler at (847) 782-4126 or sfowler@catholicchari es.net

A er Jesus tells a large crowd about the sower and the seed, the disciples ask him why he speaks in parables. Christ responds, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted…This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see, and hear but do not listen or understand. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says, ‘You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes...’” Jesus then elaborates, explaining that the seed is not the Word of God per se but is--essen ally--each of us (given the day). “The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no roots and lasts only for a me…The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit...” On our best days, though, we are the seed sown on rich soil, who hear the word, produce fruit, feed the Kingdom. I’m no farmer, but I admire--and thank--the people who work the land. And I’m thinking most of these folks would look at this parable and scratch their heads. I mean, what kind of farmer sows seed on a footpath, or rocky ground, or among thorns?

Certainly this is poor planning in the face of modern agriculture, but just as certainly, Jesus has a different harvest in mind. But to this end, who’s the sower, anyway? Despite his elabora on, Christ doesn’t really define the person spreading the Word. It’s Jesus himself, of course, and his ministers, deacons, priests. But it’s you and me as well. For just as we are the seed receiving the Word, we are the seed called to live the Word. Several years ago in the Catholic New World, Cardinal George wrote that given the declining number of Mass a endees, one could argue that we don’t have a shortage of priests, but rather, of Catholics. This situa on seems to have only go en worse, perhaps promp ng Bishop John Manz to say during his homily at the Chicago Associa on of Holy Name Socie es/Mater Chris Parish Spiritual Assembly Mass that while he’s not op mis c about the future of the Church, he’s hopeful. Hopeful because hundreds of men showed up that night in the name of Jesus the Christ? As somebody online wrote about today’s Gospel, “Our seed must be sown or there will never be a crop, but by no means is the harvest all up to us. We must sow the seeds, but we must also trust that what will grow will grow and what doesn't is out of our control.” Maybe it’s not totally on us to change the world, but a part of me keeps thinking it is. And to that end, may we never forget that on our very best days, by God, we do.
