GIS?
You Mean That Weird Guy Upstairs?
What is GIS?
• A geographic information system (GIS) is software designed to capture, manage, analyze, and display all forms of geographically referenced information.
• GIS lets us visualize, question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends.
• GIS software helps you answer questions and solve problems by looking at your data in a way that is quickly understood and easily shared—on a map!
GIS and e911
Enhanced 911• GIS is used at the end of call processing to graphically display
location information to dispatchers
GIS and NG 911
Next Generation 911
NG 911 is an initiative that aims to transform the current PSAPs and Public Safety emergency communications environment to support the widely varied methods of communication that are in use by the public today and will be in use in the future.
GIS and NG 911
Next Generation 911• Why?
The existing 9-1-1 Infrastructure is 40 years old
Changes in communication technologies are accelerating the obsolescence of the current 9-1-1 system (Texting, VoIP, Video, Alarms)
Current system handles only voice
Many people with hearing and speech disabilities have abandoned TDD in favor of text messaging
GIS and NG 911
Next Generation 911• GIS becomes one of the central data stores • GIS is fully integrated and required
