FIRST EVER LONDON-WIDE CARER FESTIVAL—21 Sept 2019
Carers across the capital celebrated the unique role they play in the lives of millions of Londoners at a landmark new event. And a group of Carers from Enfield braved the journey to Bow to enjoy the sunshine and activities.
The first ever London-wide Carer Festival, organised by the London Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (LondonADASS) and supported by London local authorities, voluntary groups and volunteers, took place on Saturday 21 September, 2019.
The festival was hosted by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets at Bromley-by-Bow Centre and Bob’s Park in east London. Approximately 500 carers from every London borough and their loved ones were invited to join in the fun.
The focal point of the festival was the main stage, where a dazzling variety of show-stopping performances took place throughout the afternoon. There were also food stalls, arts and crafts activities,
meditation zone and a venue for performances exploring social issues.
Anne Canning, LondonADASS Carer Lead and Group Director at Hackney Council, said:
“London’s carers are incredibly proud of what they do. Rather than focussing on the challenges they face, they told us they wanted a celebration that showcased their talents and experience both as carers and as people – a day to enjoy themselves.
“The LondonADASS Carer Festival was the first event of its kind in the capital and it was a huge success, enjoyed by hundreds of carers and their families. I speak for all London boroughs, the City of London and participating voluntary groups and volunteers when I say it was a joy and a privilege to be involved.”
One carer who attended the festival, said: “Thank you all who organised [the
festival] and entertained us so well. It was good to see differently able, diverse cultures involved in all activities.”
The festival was heavily subsidised by ADASS and transport to the festival was paid for by Enfield Carers Centre for Carers travelling from Enfield.
Feedback from Enfield Carers was extremely positive and the beautiful weather certainly helped the day go well.
We’re looking forward to next year’s event!

It’s important for all carers to keep themselves healthy
and well so that they can continue looking after their
cared for person. Often carers put their own health needs
last because they’re busy and concerned about the needs
of their loved one. ECC recognises that carers are important too and recommends that
GPs provide an annual health check for every carer. If you haven’t had your health
check, please ask your GP for one.

Safe and Connected/Telecare
is a twenty four-hour emergency service run by the Enfield Council that helps people live inde-pendently and safely in their own homes.
The service is available to Enfield residents and particularly people who may feel vulnerable, have a disability, health problem and/or other long-term condition including dementia, those who would like to be able to call for help at any hour of the day or night so as to enable them to live independently and feel protected in their homes.
Safe and Connected also provide a range of new technology and equipment to help your loved ones stay safe at home and which could allow you to have more time to yourself, or give you peace of mind whilst you go out, or just have some quiet time in another room.
ECC can help you get free equipment such as:
• Special fire safety equipment for people with hearing, sight, dementia, physical or mental health issues
• A smartphone with functions (apps) that could help you care for your loved one
• Helpful aids or apps to make things easier at home
Come to the Carers Centre: see and test out equipment and learn what other useful items, technology and information is available for carers and the person you care for. We can help you learn how to use smartphone
apps too!

Christmas Appeal – Presents for
Young Carers
We are asking for donations of NEW, unwrapped gifts or toys for young carers who may not otherwise receive a gift . These will be
given out at our Young Carers Christmas party on 18th December at Enfield Carers Centre. Many Young Carers will be facing a cold, hungry Christmas with
little or no gifts coming their way. You can help to change that!
If you would like to help, the next time you are in a supermarket, Argos or toy store, please pick up
something small and drop it into our Toy Donation bucket at reception or call us to collect it if you cannot make it here.
You can help to bring a smile to a Young Carer’s face this Christmas! We had wonderful support for this appeal from the general public last
year. Let’s make this Christmas just as successful.
Thank you for your support!
