Up for a manager’s job? So howwill yo

perform under the testing microscope?WHETHER you’re an experienced manageror applying for your first managerial posi-tion, you can expect to face some stringenttests as part of the interview process. Moreindustries are subjecting candidates topsychometric tests, completed online as apre-assessment before the actual interview.

Rob Williams, chartered occupationalpsychologist and independent psychometrictest developer, reveals the three types of testsyou’re most likely to encounter and how toperform at your best.

Personality questionnairesThese kind of tests have no right or wrong

answer. Instead, they are designed to ascer-tain your management style and see if it fitswith the job.

The best way to prepare is to thoroughlyresearch the position (and similar roles inthe company and across your industry) to getan idea of the personality traits they mostvalue.

These kind of tests are often used to gener-ate question prompts for recruiters to probeyour weaker personality traits. ‘Big discrep-ancies will probably be flagged within yourpersonality profile, so prepare to be ques-tioned further about these,’ warns Rob.

So how can you do well on them?Rob said: “The best advice is to answer

them as honestly as possible with the firstresponse that comes to mind. It’s fruitless toguess the ‘right’ profile – trying to ‘fake’ your

personality fit is a sure sign that you are ap-plying for the wrong job.”

Broadly speaking, your answers shoulddemonstrate your drive, ambition and as-sertiveness.

Managerial pressures usually increasewith authority, hence an even more resilient

and calm approach is required for the seniorroles. According to Rob, certain traits maybe valued differently across manageriallevels.Team leaders will be expected to assertand coach others in following best practiceand adhering to company rules and proce-dures.

Middle managerial profiles require moreadvanced planning and organisationalskills to effectively manage their increasedresourcing responsibilities.

A director’s effectiveness is dependentupon their board-level interactions, so con-flict/team management approaches, leadingchange and decision-making styles will bescrutinised in applicant personality profiles.

Other additional ‘fit’-type personalitytests may be used, such as values tests orstrengths tests.

Similarly, key skills such as creative think-ing, emotional intelligence, team-buildingskills and interpersonal skills can be meas-ured with personality tests designed specifi-cally for that purpose.

Rob said: “Effective decision-making isso important that junior and middle-levelmanagers will often be given a situational judgement test designed to test some of themanagerial role’s complexities.”
