Survey reveals cost of childcare prevenparents from going back to work earlieTHE high cost of childcare isstill the main barrier prevent-ing mothers from returning towork, according to annual surveyresults from jobs site working-mums.co.uk.
Despite government proposalsto introduce free childcare forthree and four year olds, and atax-free childcare initiative, 61per cent of women currentlynot working said childcare costswere making it difficult for themto return to employment.
The research suggests that toomuch focus has been on relievingthe costs of early-years childcare,when in fact finding afford-
able and adequate childcare forschool-aged children is a problemfor 57 per cent of survey respond-ents.
The survey of more than 2,300mothers across the UK foundthat over half of working mumscontinue to struggle with holidayand after-school care, and it washaving an impact on their abilityto do their job.
Working parents said the cur-rent childcare options available
to them were not flexible enoughto meet the changing nature of employment, with 41 per centstating this to be the case.
While 45 per cent of respond-ents said they relied on grandpar-ents to cut down the expense of caring for children.
Up to 38 per cent of mums saidthey would consider sharedparental leave, but this is sig-nificantly down on last year’sfigures, when 44 per cent of mothers said they would consideradopting the approach.
Gillian Nissim, founder of workingmums.co.uk, said manyworking parents were deterred
by the complexity of legislation.“The survey results show thereare significant problems with thecost and availability of childcareand with the kind of flexiblechildcare options that parentsare increasingly demanding.
“In the last general election,childcare featured prominently,yet most of the focus was on earlyyears. Childcare for school-agedchildren consequently remains aparticular problem and parents
feel that this not being addressedby government policy,” she said.
Earlier this week, charityWorking Families revealed theirannual Top Employers list, whichrecognises those organisationswith best practice flexible andfamily friendly working policies.
Centrica, the Ministry of Justice and Southdown Hous-ing Association were amongstthe top ten employers for their‘leadership and innovation’ inembedding a flexible and family-friendly working environment.
Julian Foster, managing direc-tor at Computershare, sponsorsof the survey said: “The best
employees have rounded exist-ences, and the best employers donot force their staff to compro-mise their commitment to theirfamilies.
“Flexible working creates hap-pier and healthier workforcesthat are hardworking, committedand loyal, and it’s great to havehad another chance this year toshare ideas and reward thoseorganisations that empower theiremployees,” he said.
