Research by the London School of Business and Finance has revealedthat 47 per cent of the UK’s workerswould like to change their currentcareer.
Worryingly, in this study of 1,000professionals, 23 per cent said theyregret choosing their current oc-cupation.
So with so many unhappy workers,what’s stopping them from makingthe jump?
For 29 per cent of respondents,financial insecurity was the top rea-son for not risking a change, whichLee Biggins, founder and managingdirector at CV-Library, said wasn’tsurprising.
“The majority of the UK workforcesuffered through a period of greatuncertainty around the job marketand considered themselves lucky tohave a job, let alone a job they loved.In September, the ONS announcedthat employment rates had returnedto record highs and our own datasupports these findings,” he said.
“But while the economic situationhas improved, people’s attitudes
toward career stability have notand it’s likely workers feel residualconcern from the recession.
“It’s really unfortunate to see thata high proportion of the nation’sworkforce is dissatisfied and it’seven more concerning that theydon’t feel confident enough to switch jobs, especially when job levels areup,” Biggins said.
Dr Steve Priddy, director of re-search and academic dean at LSBF,said there’s a definite disconnectbetween what we’ve been told aboutthe current economy, and what indi-viduals are feeling and experiencingin the labour market.
“If we listen to what’s being saidabout the economy, everything’s go-ing really well, the economy is grow-ing, pay rises are coming through,but you contrast that with what’scome through in our survey andyou get a very different message,”he said.
Money woes aren’t the only factorholding potential changers back.Other rationales include people notknowing what they want to changetheir career to (20 per cent) and thefear of failure (15 per cent).
Knowing you want to jump ship
without knowing where you wantto land is not as uncommon as youmight think, Lisa LaRue, careercoach at CareerWorx said.
“Career uncertainty can be veryunsettling and can affect all parts of our lives. What seems to be an easychoice for some can be a very com-plex one for others,” she said.
“It’s important that personalvalues, interests and aptitudes aretaken into account when makingcareer decision along with consid-eration of individual circumstances,opportunities and potential threats.”
As far as what motivates people tothink about switching, 39 per centsaid increased salary prospects, 35per cent said better work-life bal-ance and 34 per cent said improved job satisfaction.
Priddy said: “There’s some tradi-tional, sensible measures we cantake as HR managers for engagingwith staff and understanding it’snot just salary that drives people.
“And it seems we all know thesesimple straight forward thingswhich can be done for engagement,encouraging innovation and so on,but it is clear that we’re not gettingthem right.”
