Welcome Cultural Activity May 7, 2011

On Saturday May 7th Access students visited the Libray at Aricana Headquarters in order to participate in the first cultural activity of the year, which was meant to celebrate Earth Day and meet OAJNU members.

While coming into the Library, students were given a name card and divided into groups according to different Earth themes. They watched some short videos about the problems our planet is facing today and they gathered into their corresponding groups to make posters and pledges on different ways to take care of the Earth. They were then filmed showing their posters and saying their pledges, what we will be able to see on Aricana’s webpage.

Last Saturday we went to Aricana with other Access students. We watched some videos and we met OAJNU members and also members of Aricana´s Staff. We made posters and promised to protect the Earth. I liked it a lot!

Last Saturday morning I went to Aricana Sede Central with my friends and teachers. We watched some videos and made posters. We made a video about “Waste and Garbage”. We also met the group OAJNU and the General Coordinator of Access Program.

On Saturday May 7th we went to Aricana and it was very nice because we watched a movie about the Earth and made promises to protect it. Also, two girls from OAJNU came and talked about some proyects for us. Then, we ate cookies and drank sodas.

On May 7th Access students went to Aricana Sede Central to visit the library. We did activities about “Earth Day” and we met other students. After that, three girls from OAJNU came. On Saturday we went to Aricana Sede Central. We watched videos about several problems that affect the world. Then we made banners with the problems and two people filmed us. We met new students. On Saturday we went to Aricana’s library. They gave us the course books, and we met other Access students. People from OAJNU talked about two projects for us. We learned about the various actions we can do to protect the environment.

In this opportunity we met some members of OAJNU (Youth Argentinian Organization for the United Nations), who told Access students about the aim of their organization and the projects we are going to carry out together throughout the year.

After the activities, students received their English books and we all enjoyed a snack of cookies and sodas.

The Access Program is cool. OAJNU is interesting. My classmates are nice and all the students of the program are so cool. The teacher speaks English very well.

I liked the Earth Day celebration because we learned more about how to care for theenvironment. In my group we made promises to protect it. For example, we should not throw garbage and we should reduce, reuse and recycle. The conversation with OAJNU members was very interesting too.

Soul Food Session May 19, 2011

On May 19th former Access students participated in the Soul Food session carried out by the United States Embassy in Argentina. It took place at the installations in IGA (Gastronomic Institute) whose General Manager kindly facilitated for us. Soul Food refers to typical Afro‐American dishes, which in this opportunity were prepared and tried by the students after learning some recipes and aspects from this culture.

The workshop was led by the Cultural Affairs Officer Neal Murata and the ex‐fulbrighter Diane Ghogomu and a team of collaborators, Federico Scremin, Laura Santamarina y Ezequiel Guzmán(Chef), from the US Embassy. ARICANA and Access program members also participated and collaborated with students while preparing the dishes.

The Soul Food workshop started with a talk by Neal Murata about the origins of Soul Food. Afterwards, students got into groups in order to prepare 5 different dishes: Homemade Corn Bread, Homemade Macaroni and Cheese, Barbecue Chicken and Coleslaw. While the food was in the ovens, Diane Ghogomu told students more about several aspects of the Afro American culture and the origin of Soul Food. They learned that Soul Food has its origin in the times of slavery, when many slaves, after being released, were so poor that they couldn’t even buy food. They could only afford the cheapest food so they used the least tasty parts of the meat to prepare their meals. A common aspect in this kind of food is that nothing was wasted, everything could be used to make tasty meals such as puddings, cakes and croquettes. Once the food was ready, everyone enjoyed the dishes. They were delicious!

We want to thank the members of the US Embassy and ARICANA Staff for making such wonderful and enriching experience possible. We also want to thank former Access students for their attendance and participation. We had a great time! We Traveled to Washington, D.C. June 13 and 14, 2011

n June 13th and 14th Access students had a special class about

Washington D.C. OFirstly, we checked how much they knew about the capital of the

USA by giving them some statements about this city. Students

decided if the sentences were true or false and went back over

the results once the class was finished to check if they were right.

Then, they enjoyed a Power Point Presentation in which they learned about many interesting

aspects of Washington’s culture such as famous buildings and memorials, popular sports, nightlife,

celebrations and much more.

After the presentation the students worked with

different activities to put into practice what they had

learned and they even played a famous game called

“Jeopardy” to test how much they remembered

about Washington D.C.

Finally, students themselves looked for

information about other important cities from the

United States and prepared oral and written

presentations about them.

The class was marvelous and interesting. I really liked the part of the video about Monuments and Memorials.

The activity was very interesting because you can learn the culture of this city. I recommend this city because it’s beautiful and the monuments are amazing.

Marco Heredia’s Visit July 19 and 20, 2011

n July 19th and 20th we had our first cultural activity after the Winter

Break. Marco Heredia, a fifteen‐year‐old boy from Houston, Texas visited Access students. Marco’s parents are originally from Rosario but they moved to Houston some years ago and he was born there. They came to Argentina for their summer vacation and Marco delivered a wonderful class to show us what the life of a typical American teenager is like.

Differences between our life and Marco’s

Marco´s life and my life are very different. Marco’s school is bigger than my school. He plays the saxophone and I can’t play any instruments. He plays soccer and tennis and I play rugby. The educational system in the USA is different from the Argentinean system. Also, the most popular sport in the USA is baseball and in Argentina it is soccer.

IVAN PLOUGANOU (ACCESS 1C) Marco’s arrival was very nice. The difference between the United States and Argentina is that there are no bowling alleys here. Another thing is that you can be out of your house until nine, if you want to be in the street more time you have to be older. You can get the driving license at the age of sixteen and schools are huge and very nice there.

AXEL CANDIDO (ACCESS 1 D) Marco’s life is much busier and there are many rules at school and in the street. At the age of 16 they already finish High School and start the University. There are rooms where you can live while you study. They also practise many sports but it’s very expensive. Here in Argentina it is not. Also teenagers of 16 usually receive a car as a present and can have a license there.

The things that surprised us the most about Marco´s life:

The most surprising is that there are many rules, the boys don’t go out after midnight and they don’t write the desks at school.

CYNTHIA BOGADO (ACCESS 1A) What surprised me the most was an exhibition of amusing cars. He plays the saxophone in the school orchestra. He showed us his yearbook. It was like in the films!

LUCÍA RICCI (ACCESS 1C) His school is so large, there is a cafeteria and they have a large variety of food for lunch. He has a group of friends like me and plays the saxophone very well. His life is fantastic and the place where he lives is very nice.

YAMILA BASTERRA (ACCESS 2A) It’s a good experience that a boy of our age talks to us about his country and his daily life. It surprised me the fact that in Texas it is possible to drive a vehicle at the age of 16. Also, the fact that they don’t usually travel by bus and the curfew for teenagers is very different.

Independence Day Celebration July 30, 2011

n July 30th we met at the library at Aricana Headquarters to celebrate the Independence of the USA and Argentina. O

Students made several posters showing different aspects of their independence processes such as the causes, important people involved, significant cities, symbols, facts and the society. For this, they used information and images they had previously looked for at home. They also had the opportunity to use the computers in the library or read magazines and books to look for the information they needed.

August 18, 2011 State Alumni

On August 18th Access students in second year met at

ARICANA Bella Vista so as to take part in an activity organized by State Alumni Argentina. The workshop was conducted by the Alumni Coordinator Federico Scremin and counted with the participation of the Public Affairs Officer Diana Page. On this occasion, students learnt how to register to the Alumni website and had a chance to explore it.

Alumni is a website where you can contact

other Access students from around the world. Federico is in charge of this and helped us register because you can meet new people and also ask for information of the US.

The State Alumni is a community formed by all past and current participants of U.S.

government‐sponsored exchange programs. By becoming a member, students can find various opportunities available to them such as contacting fellow alumni in their country and all around the world, having access to international newspapers, searching for jobs or grant opportunities and more. In the case of second year students, who are taking part in the United Nations model, they even have the possibility to contact people from the countries they will represent and get necessary information for their participation.

Open Ceremony August 18, 2011

n August 18th Access students were officially presented as part of the Access Micro Scholarship Program 2011‐2012 in the Opening Ceremony that took place at Zona Parque School. Members of the USA Embassy and of ARICANA staff were present as

well as the students of the program, who were accompanied by their families. The authorities from Soldados Argentinos, Magnasco and Zona Parque schools also took part in this event with the students.

The ceremony was conducted by the President of the Board

of Directors of ARICANA, Dr. Angel Cesaretti Monti whose words were encouraging for Access students and by the Public Affairs Officer in the American Embassy in Buenos Aires, Diane Page, who expressed her happiness for being part of such an important event. Students were a bit nervous at the beginning of the ceremony but after receiving their Awards they relaxed and took pictures with the authorities, their classmates and families.

I liked the ceremony that we had with people from the Embassy. It was good. I liked the

diploma. Some nice things happened and when it finished Mrs. Diane Page talked to me and a friend. She was very friendly.

We received the Access Micro scholarship diplomas. It was a nice experience because my

sister is also in the program. The members of the Embassy were surprised because it is unusual to see two sisters in the program. I feel proud because I think it is a great opportunity for my future.

the ceremony because it was interesting.

Spring Sports Day September 23, 2011

n Friday September 23rd all Access students met at “Jorge Newbery” Stadium to celebrate

Spring Day during a beautiful sunny afternoon. Members of Aricana staff collaborated with the

organization of the event as well as ex Access students and Hugo Burke, in representation of

the Information Resource Center, located in the U.S. Embassy.

The different Access groups gathered to celebrate Student and Spring Day. We were divided into groups with different colors. There were several games. In the Pairs Race each group was divided in two rows, we had to carry another partner on our backs and when we were back the other continued. What I liked the most was the Volleyball Game. We had to pass the ball with a piece of sheet. It was fun and I would like to do it again.

In the “Spring Sports Day” we played Carrera con carretilla. A girl runs with another girl. The boys and girls screamed because they were tired but they have fun. I don’t really like this game but I’d do it again.

In the Spring Day celebration we participated in games and they gave us numbers. With those numbers we participated in raffles with different prizes. I won two numbers but I only received one prize and it was a beautiful keychain. I am very grateful for the prize and I enjoyed the celebration very much.

United Nations Model October 7 to 9, 2011

Today we’re really proud of sharing with you one of the most important cultural

activities of the year and of Access program. Students from 2nd year (2010‐2011

Edition) participated in the 4th Regional United Nations Model organized by OAJNU.

The event took place from October 7th to 9th and there were about 300 adolescents from

different cities AROUND the country.

During the model our students

represented the delegations of Australia,

Egypt, Peru, Qatar, Red Cross, Senegal,

Spain and the United States, and

participated in the Security Council,

Assemblies and meetings just like

diplomats and ambassadors from the UN

do. In order to meet this challenge, students

had to do some search on general data about

their countries as well as on the topics to be

discussed (Technological development, Nuclear

Disarmament, Promotion of Children’s rights

and Gender Equality). They also took part in

Internal and External Training Sessions where

they received all the necessary information

about the model and their performances in it.

Before the Model...

‐‐ What were the Internal and External Training Sessions?

‐‐ They were very interesting because people from OAJNU explained everything. I listened and took down notes of everything they said. I felt good but it was sometimes a bit boring. What I most liked was the Internal training because I understood more and I could ask questions.

‐‐ In the training sessions the OAJNUs told us about the Model and what we had to do. I felt good but I was too nervous for the Model. I liked the information search in Aricana’s Lab.

‐‐ What was the process of Information

Search like?

‐‐ The search for information was very good and my delegation visited the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires. Mr. Hugo Burke helped us. We used pages from the White House, Department of State and CIA Factbook. He gave us the flag of the United States and some other presents such as pens, sheets of papers and folders for us to use in the UN Model.

‐‐ What happened during the Assemblies and Informal meetings?

‐‐ I spoke about the position of my country as regards different topics. I was very nervous but I debated with the students representing other countries. What I most liked was the process of voting.

‐‐ My experience was great! During the United Nations Model we talked about the different problems in the world and we looked for a solution. The first day I was nervous but then I felt better and I could express my ideas. I liked the Informal meetings because they gave me the chance to express my opinion without presidency being there to hear it. I liked it a lot!

‐‐ What did you do during the Disco night and Breaks?

‐‐ The disco night was fun, the music was good and everyone danced. We danced a lot, ate pizza and drank soda. We made new friends. The breaks were very nice. The food was delicious and we could talk to other students. It was a time to relax and talk with friends. I really liked the Model and I would like to repeat it.

MACARENA NOVAL – ACCESS 2B ‐‐ On Saturday night I danced all night with Bruno. We also drank soda and ate pizza. During the breaks I felt relaxed because I drank coffee and ate cakes. The UN Model was fantastic for me because I could meet other people from all around Argentina.

After the Model...

‐‐ I’d like to participate again in the Model. I found it very interesting because it teaches you to communicate with people in a formal way. You also have the opportunity to learn more about other countries and the crises and problems humanity is facing. I think it will be useful for improving my education and it will open my eyes about what is happening in the world.

LEONELA UTRERA – ACCESS 2B ‐‐ I would like to participate again next year. It was a wonderful experience. It will be useful for my future because the experience taught me to talk in front of people and to learn about other countries’ culture, traditions and their viewpoints as regards different situations.

Not everything was hard work. On Saturday night the students had a Disco night. It was a

moment for them to relax, to dance and to have fun among all the participants and collaborators of the model.

We want to congratulate our students for their hard work, effort and commitment in such

an important event. We are convinced they will be absolutely benefited from this experience not only in their future as professionals but also as adolescents aware of the problems of the world around them.

Halloween Party October 30, 2011

HALLOWEEN PARTY

On Sunday 30th October, Access

students celebrated Halloween with a Costume Party. They wore amazing and very creative costumes and many of them were even made by themselves.

They danced all night with their

friends and teachers and they also had some sandwiches, chips and soda. Towards the end of the party they played a game in which they had to find scary pictures, participated in a raffle and won some candies.

At the Halloween party we

danced a lot. I really liked this event because it was fun. I hope we can do it again. I wore a “Witch” costume but I didn’t win a prize. I really liked Barbara’s costume, she was a vampire.

The party was fabulous and very fun. We danced, sang and we had a great time. The costumes were fabulous too. The teachers were very nice and it was fun to dance with them. At the end of the party they gave us candies.

GISELA OJEDA (ACCESS 1A) We danced, ate sandwiches, drank soda and had fun. I liked the party a lot beause it was amazing. I didn’t win anything. My favorite costume was Nahuel’s; he was “Santa Claus”.

The Halloween party was the best celebration of the year. There were a lot of people. I danced with my friends all the time. They wore excellent costumes. The scariest was Alejandro’s costume.

I wore the costume of the character from the movie Saw. My uncle took me to Aricana and all the peopl on the street thought I was crazy. I won the prize as The Scariest costume. The prize was a mouse for the computer.

ALEJANDRO OLIVIERI (ACCESS 1B)

On Halloween Day we had a costume party. I wore a “Dead Little Red Riding Hood” costume. I really liked mine but I didn’t win a prize. My favorite costume was Soledad’s; she was a “Pumpkin”. I think it was the most original costume. At the party there was music, food and drink. Before the end, we played some games. I didn’t win but I had a wonderful time.

On October 30th I went to a party in ARICANA. There was food and drinks. I wore a zombie costume. I didn’t win a prize for my costume but my favorite one was Agustina’s costume. She was a zombie too. I really liked it because it was fun and we danced a lot!!!

In the Halloween party we danced and had fun. I liked it because it was great fun and the decoration was beautiful. I wore a “Scream” costume. I didn’t win a prize for my costume but the one I liked the most was the “Pumpkin” costume.

It was so much fun. We danced a lot and ate sandwiches. Everybody wore costumes. I wore a “Prisoner” costume. I didn’t win a prize but I had fun. I liked all the costumes but my favorite ones were the “Mime”, “Santa Claus” and “Billy” from the Saw movie.

MACARENA NOVAL (ACCESS 2B) This was a great party. I had fun and danced a lot. I like parties because I spend time with my friends and classmates. I wore a police costume but I didn’t win any prizes. My favorite costume was the “Crazy girl”.

Finally there were very interesting prizes for different categories of costumes although all

of them were great; The Funniest Costume (Florencia Rodríguez – Access 2A), The Scariest Costume (Alejandro Olivieri – Access 1B), The Most Original Costume (Nahuel Galarza ‐ Access 1D) and The Best Costume (Yazmín Pollo – Access 1B). All winners were very happy with their prizes.

Youth Citizenship Program November 4, 2011

Youth Citizenship Program

On November 4th, Access students in 1st year

attended the Closing Exposition of the program Youth Citizenship which is annually organized by OAJNU.

This exposition was an opportunity to show the

projects students carried out throughout the year. The aim of the Youth Citizenship program is for students to identify common problems in their schools, neighborhoods in order to look for possible solutions. Prior to the closing event, students also attended four workshops in which they learned and discussed important topics such as children’s rights, their active participation in society and social awareness issues.

All the Access 1 courses worked with

different and interesting topics; Animal Traffic (Access 1A), Recycling (Access 1B), Sexual education (Access 1C) and Animal Mistreatment (Access 1D).

In the workshops we talked about the

environment. For me it’s really important to take care of the environment and we can do it by recycling. I discussed this with my friend.

In the workshops we learned a lot of things. For example, we learned about children’s

rights. Then we designed a project about animal abuse. I think the workshops were interesting to learn to respect others and to be respected.

Our project was about the mistreatment of domestic animals. I collaborated in designing brochures with information about this topic. I liked it very much because it was interesting and fun. I learned how to take care of animals.

My course decided to make a project about the importance of recycling to take care of the planet since it is a problem that affects everyone. We made a video about the topic and showed it in our schools. We also talked with the students about it and conducted a survey to know about their opinions and habits.

In the project I searched for information and talked with students about sexual education and sexually transmitted diseases. I really liked the project because it’s very important to learn about this.

First we saw other students videos. Then, we showed our video about Animal Traffic. After

that, we did some group activities. First, we asked other students questions and when they answered “Yes” they had to sign a piece of paper. Then we marked important places in our city on big maps and we showed them to the other groups. I liked working with the maps and watching the videos. I felt happy because it was fun.

Thanksgiving November 23 and 24, 2011

The last ACCESS cultural activity was on November 23rd

and 24th when we celebrated Thanksgiving.

This popular American holiday commemorates the day

when the first settlers helped the pilgrims escaping from persecution how to hunt and grow food, among other important values and teachings. Since then, on the last Thursday in November Americans give thanks for all the blessings of the year and celebrate it with family reunions, typical foods and parades.

In this special class, Access students read

some texts and did activities to learn about the origin of Thanksgiving, important symbols, typical foods and customs. After this, they watched an episode from the famous American sitcom “Friends” in which the characters celebrate Thanksgiving Day. Students could not only read but also see how people spend such an important holiday.

Students enjoyed this class very much and

we are very happy to see them so interested in learning about the American culture, which is one of the aims of Access Program.

ACCESS CAMP December 15 and 16, 2011

On December 15th and 16th Access

students took part in the second Access Summer Camp organized by the US Embassy in “Las Clavelinas” Camp Resort, in Ingeniero Maschwitz. Access students from others cities such as Córdoba, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero and Comodoro Rivadavia were also present,giving everyone there a chance to make new friends, interact and share their experiences from the 2 years in the Access program.

The camp was a great opportunity for recreation since students took part in many fun

activities: they danced hip‐hop, played American football and softball, they showed their physical skills doing circus tricks and they sang in a karaoke on Thursday night.

Friday was another special day because the US Ambassador in Argentina, Ms. Vilma

Martínez, was present at the diploma ceremony. She presented students with their certificates of achievement and gave a very inspiring speech. All those who were present were glad and proud of meeting her. They also had the chance to meet her again at her residence in Capital Federal, where they could enjoy a tour of her home and take a group picture with her. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone and we want to thank and congratulate the members of the US Embassy for the organization of the camp, the US Ambassador for her words and kindness to students, and of course, all the students for their good behavior and willingness to participate in the activities.

Closing Ceremony December 20, 2011

On December 20th, the Closing Ceremony for Access 2010‐2011 was held at the

library in ARICANA. On this occasion 21 students received their diplomas. The authorities of ARICANA, Zona Parque School, Soldados Argentinos School, teachers and families were also there to share such an important moment with the graduating students.

It was nice to listen to the speeches given by the President of ARICANA, Dr. Angel

Cesaretti Monti, the Head teacher of Soldados Argentinos School, Ms. Stella Maris Stangaferro and, most importantly, the speeches delivered by some of the graduating students, who expressed their gratitude towards the program and their friends and their happiness for these 2 years of learning, sharing and having fun.
