CHRIST IN OUR LIFE

Before Jesus was rejected by the people of his own home town of Nazareth he had worked a series of miracles: 1) over nature in stilling the sea 2) over evil spirits by exor-cising demons 3) disease by curing a woman with a hemor-rhage 4) over death by raising the daughter of Jairus. By doing so he clearly demonstrated his power as God.

Now Jesus returns to Nazareth and his fellow townspeople reject him. They were so familiar with him in his human-ity that they couldn't conceive of his Divinity. They fail to perceive that Je-sus is the Christ. He is Emmanuel - God with us, the fulfillment of the prophesy of Isaiah (Matthew 1, 23). He is the Divine Word who took flesh and dwelt among us (John 1,14). He is the Lamb of God, the one who was promised who would take away the sins of the world.

Jesus is more than a prophet, but part of his mission was prophetic. He pro-claimed a message of moral reform, mercy and salvation. When we were

baptized into Christ we were called to share in Christ's pro-phetic mission.

To be a prophet is especially difficult in one's own hometown, in our family and among other people who know us well, yet that is what we're called to do. Another reason it is difficult to be a prophet is that no one wants to be seen as self-righteous.

It is also difficult to be a prophet because we're afraid of appearing to be judgmental. Anyone who wants to live an authentic Christian life will struggle against temptation and sin. We know we're not perfect people and so we must avoid casting moral judgments on persons, but we must clearly speak out against injustice. We must clearly speak up for what is right and denounce what is wrong. This is especially so in our time when there are so many threats to human life and the modern attack on chastity and God's plan for sex, marriage and family life.

But the wisdom of the Gospel is not our own. We proclaim what we have received ourselves. Not to proclaim it would be unfaithful and ungrateful to God who revealed it to us. If we fail to share the prophetic message of the Gospel oth-er louder voices will be happy to impose their godless vi-sion of society on us.

It's not easy to be prophetic. It never has and it never will be, but nevertheless that's what God calls us to be and he promises a prophet's reward for fidelity to our mission.

Lord, help us to remain steadfast in our commitment to share the Gospel in our homes, neighborhoods, parish

communities, and wherever you may lead us.

S hortly after Bishop Parkes was installed as fifth bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg

on January 4, 2017, people began to ask about his vision for the Diocese. Bishop Parkes set out to learn from the priests, religious, deacons, employees, and parishioners about their hopes and concerns.

T hrough listening sessions, gatherings and online surveys, Bishop Parkes heard common themes about

the need to expand outreach efforts to the poor and vulner-able, youth and young adults and fallen away Catholics.

W ith clarity, purpose and renewed hope, Courageous-ly Living the Gospel is a source of inspiration and

direction as we each strive daily to be Disciples of Jesus Christ. W : Proclaiming: Knowing and sharing the Gospel of Jesus. “This gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world.” – Matthew 24:14 Inviting: Welcoming and accompanying others as Jesus did. “Welcome one another, then, as Christ welcomed you, for the glory of God.” – Romans 15:7 Encountering: Growing in relationship to Jesus and one another. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” – James 4:8

PRAYER Almighty, ever-living God, by our baptism, we have

been called to live as missionary disciples of your Son, Jesus Christ.

Grant that we, your people of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, will fulfill our purpose by proclaiming the Good News and

inviting all people to experience the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.

Deepen our trust in you, O Lord, and help us to remain steadfast in our commitment to Courageously Living the

Gospel in our homes, neighborhoods, parish communities, and wherever you may lead us.

Together, with the intercession of our Blessed Mother and all the saints who have gone before us, we humbly ask for the courage to live as your disciples standing firm in our Catholic

faith, through your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
