AUGUST 2015 SSA GLOBE PAGE 51 Alabama alabamassa.org Greetings from the board of directors of the Alabama Self Storage Associ- ation. As we enter into the heart of summer and the peak of the rental season, we earnestly hope that your self storage business is prospering. I am sure that most of you are aware by now that our lien law bill died on the last day of the session. e Alabama legislature voted to end one day early as soon as the governor vetoed the general budget. Knowing that everyone would have to return this month for a special session to address the budget, the vote was taken to end the session early. Our bill was one of 200 bills waiting for a floor vote in the senate. We, as members of the board of directors, are obviously frustrated beyond belief. At the time of this writing, we are planning on huddling soon to discuss our options and strategies for next year. We will keep you informed along the way. We would like to thank everyone who generously donated to our efforts this past year. Our next event will be in October. Our annual fall luncheon will be held in late October in the Birmingham area. We are in the beginning stages of planning for the event. Please check our website in the coming weeks for updated information. As we continue to grow as an orga- nization we would like to remind everyone that we covet your input. We always look to our members to give us new ideas and to make recommendations and suggestions on how we can better assist and serve you. If you do have any comments, ideas, or suggestions please send them to Brent Fields at brent.fields@ docupak.com. Your suggestions and comments will go directly to the association board of directors for consideration. If you have not joined the Alabama Self Storage Association, we want you as a member of our team. Join today and take advantage of all of the wonderful benefits for all of our members. Some of those bene- fits include affordable member- ship, advocacy and keeping an ear to the ground in Montgomery, news and information, education programs, networking and informa- tive meetings, communications and publications, national association relationship and much more! Californiacaliforniaselfstorage.orgThe CSSA had its 11th annual self storage owners summit at the Balboa Bay Resort in Newport Beach on July 23. What a success! Attendees enjoyed listening to dynamic keynote speaker Peter Ueberroth, followed by a panel discussion covering industry trends, potential challenges over the next 12–36 months and an in-depth look at development versus acquisitions. The summit was a great success and we’d like to thank all of our sponsors, without whom the event could not have occurred. If you’d like to become a member of the CSSA, please contact Erin King at (909) 912-1962 or visit www.Cali-forniaSelfStorage.org.

Coloradocoloradossa.comThe COSSA spring meeting and trade show was held May 13 at the Inver-ness Conference Center in Engle-wood. Record-breaking attendance, excellent speakers, networking, intro-duction to new and longstanding vendors, and informative breakout sessions made the meeting a huge success. The presentations from speakers Ben Vestal, Argus Real Estate and Jim Stevens, Extra Space Storage, can be found on the COSSA website. The presentation by Alison Felix, Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Denver Branch, can be found on the Federal Reserve Bank website. Our sincere thanks to the sponsors for the event; their support provides the opportunity to offer meetings and speakers of such high quality.A very special part of the meeting was being introduced to Terry and his mom, one of the families helped by ATP, our community partner. Terry gave us a glimpse of what they do to help those living with a disability and how it changed his life. Due to the generosity of those in attendance, our vendors and spon-

sors, COSSA presented a check in the amount of $16,000 to ATP. But it didn’t end there; additional donations came in, bringing the total to $18,168!

“We are absolutely thrilled with the responsiveness of the COSSA community on behalf of our families. These families all have such limited resources and being able to help defray the cost of services through scholarships to families is an amazing help! We are already thinking about which families we can begin to assist in this process,” said Dr. Cathy Bodine after receiving the news. Our annual membership meeting will be held on Friday, October 16. Details of the meeting will be in the next month’s issue or on the COSSA website.

Louisianassala.orgOne of the great experiences working with the executive board of the Louisiana Self Storage Association is getting to meet our association members from around our great state. Often, the issues that come up in conversations are the same issues we hear, whether they are from Lake Charles or Monroe, from Houma or Shreveport, from New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Lafayette. We are all just trying to do fair business and take care of our tenants. The SSALA board is ready to help you do just that. Should an issue come up, call or email us and most of the time we have been able to get a response that same day. Wanda Cox, SSALA executive director, does a great job fielding questions and getting results. She may be reached at 225-774-2117.Every year we remind our south Louisiana members to be prepared for hurricane season. Have an emer-gency response plan in place and know who your company’s desig-nated spokesperson is in the event your facility has difficulties. In the members-only resource download area is a presentation given two years ago on exactly how to prepare and what to say, and maybe more impor-tantly, what not to say, during a crisis event. It is well worth taking the 20 minutes to read through it and be ready. The fall 2016 expo is gearing up. We will have all the latest information on dates and speakers at www.ssala.org. Anne Ballard, the Hat Lady, and Scott Zucker will headline, and we will also present Louisiana Lien Sale 101, an extremely comprehensive A-to-Z, step-by-step guide to navigating the lien sale process successfully. First presented at the spring luncheon, it has become one of our most-re-quested reprint items ever.

Brazilasbrass.com.brASBRASS, the Association of Brazilian Self Storage, in cooper-ation with Secovi, Sp and Better

Management Systems, LLC, is proud to announce the third annual Latin American Self Storage Trade Show and Educational Expo, November 9–10 in São Paulo, Brazil, at the offices of Secovi. After the huge success of the first two years, this annual event continues to offer the best venue for both current self storage operators and interested parties to hear information specifi-cally targeted for this market and to meet many of the vendors supporting the industry in this region.Unique this year, in addition to a slate of professional industry-spe-cific speakers, will be an entire day devoted to operators. Tested at last year’s event, this approach, where current operators could discuss issues in an open forum, with the help of experts from various opera-tional sectors, proved to be one of our highlights. This year, the second day, November 10, will be set aside for a whole day of give-and-take questions and answers and open discussion for any current self storage operator. Recently added to the speaker roster is Ashton Knowles, head of Latin American self storage real estate. Be on the lookout for additional speaker announcements. The venue is also unique. Our host, Secovi-SP, acknowledged as one of the most dynamic and renowned employer syndicates in the country, represents the leading names in São Paulo state’s real estate industry. Please visit www.ASBRASS.com.br for more details. All information plus registration for both vendor and attendees, will be available online.
