The Croft provides nursing and personal care for

people with physical or learning disabilities aged 18

or over. This home is within the same grounds as

a residential home, which provides accommodation

in bungalows for less dependent residents known as

The Croft Village. Both homes are run and operated

by the Croft Care Trust, a registered charity.

The Croft Care Trust has been using Arjo equipment

for 2 ½ years after receiving a recommendation from

another care facility in the area, Risedales.

The introduction of Arjo equipment was instigated by

the newly appointed Chief Executive Colette Hibbert,

who with the full support of her staff was working

extremely hard to raise the standard of care offered

by the Croft Care Trust.

The dedication and persistence of the whole staff

team were acknowledged in the Commission for

Social Care Inspection (CSCI) report in November

2006 when on an unannounced visit The Croft

Nursing Home received a 3 star rating, increasing the

standard of care from “good” to “excellent”.

“Without the full support of every staff member this

would not have been possible, we have all worked

extremely hard and the whole team should feel

exceptionally proud” said Colette.

The Croft Nursing Home has a comprehensive range

of Arjo equipment throughout, and 16 of the 23

bedrooms are equipped with the Maxi Sky 600, a

simple to use ceiling lifter system specifi cally installed

to manage the important resident transfers in comfort

and provide maximum safety for staff.

The home also uses the Malibu bath, a variable

height bathing system with detachable powered

transfer seat; the Carendo multi purpose hygiene

chair for variable height changing and showering in

comfort and, the Concerto shower trolley for the most

dependent residents.

Finally, the latest innovation in mobile handling aids,

the Maxi Twin is utilised to provide easy to manoeuvre

mobile sling lifting facilities throughout the Home.

The staff feel the purchase of this range of Arjo

equipment has made their ability to safely handle

residents easier. It has also improved manual handling

practices throughout the trust.

Deborah Tolley, Care Assistant has worked at The

Croft Nursing Home for eleven years and believes

“The Arjo equipment has enabled us to be more

professional when carrying out our daily duties”.

The Croft Nursing Home is a purpose built home situated

just one mile from the town centre of Barrow-in-Furness

in Cumbria, surrounded by distinctive coastline and the

outstanding beauty of the Lake District.

The variety of equipment from Arjo has ensured that

no matter what the resident’s ability there is safe and

reliable equipment to care for them as individuals.

The equipment has also had a positive impact on the

residents and has helped to promote independence

and dignity.

The Croft has a strong resident focus and there is

a shared vision between the management and staff

of how the home can develop its services to refl ect

what the residents living there want from the home

and care provided.

Colette maintains that, “This is our resident’s home.

If, for example, we believe a resident would benefi t

from having a Maxi Sky in their room we would always

ask them fi rst if they would be happy with this”.

The home also has a new policy that if a resident’s

individual needs change the necessary equipment

and alterations are done in their rooms rather than

moving them to a different room.

Since Colette’s time in charge a very successful

relationship has been developed with the Arjo fi eld

based representatives,

e are extremely pleased with the professional service we have received from Arjo

“All of the Arjo personnel that come to The Croft are

fantastic and extremely courteous and respectful to

our residents. They realise they’re visiting someone’s

home and not just a business”.

In addition to using Arjo resident handling equipment

The Croft has a comprehensive service contract

designed to keep all equipment in optimum operating

condition, “The service engineers know us well and

when a service is due they contact us to arrange a time

rather than the other way round, it’s great as it gives us

one less thing to worry about”, said Colette.

The Croft is currently in the process of having two

Sluice Rooms installed complete with the Ninjo washer

disinfector. The Ninjo is an excellent starting point for a

well-planned sluice room and is essential for protecting

both staff and residents from the potential of cross-

infection.

As Colette explained, “We are extremely pleased with

the professional service we have received from Arjo, all

staff we have worked with are friendly and supportive

and they also provide us with quality products”.
