After enjoying successful stints as both a head and assistant coach at the NCAAFBS, NAIA and high school levels over the last 18 years, Hugh Freeze was namedArkansas State’s 27th head football coach on Dec. 2, 2010.

Freeze most recently completed his first season as Arkansas State’s offensive co-ordinator, guiding the Red Wolves’ offense to a record-breaking year in 2010.

“I am thrilled to be the next head coach at Arkansas State and continue building onthe foundation Coach Roberts has set,” said Freeze. “It is a dream come true and I amvery indebted to President Welch, Chancellor Howard, Dr. Lee and Dr. Potts for theirconfidence in my ability to take this program to another level. My family and I look for-ward to being a very vital part of the Jonesboro community and the A-State family.”

Freeze made an immediate impact on ASU’s program, leading the offense to a No.43 national ranking in total offense one year after the Red Wolves finished toward thebottom of the NCAA FBS rankings at No. 95. In just their first year under Freeze’s up-tempo spread offense, the Red Wolves broke nine offensive school records that in-cluded 4,841 yards of total offense ranked No. 2 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Freeze, a noted speaker, motivator and recruiter throughout his career, led the ASUoffense to other school records such as total plays (856), first downs (262), pass at-tempts (438), pass completions (266), completion percentage (.607), passing yards(3,057), passing yards per game (254.8) and passing touchdowns (23).

The Red Wolves’ potent offensive attack averaged 403.4 yards per game, eclipsingover 300 yards all 12 times it took the field for the first time in the history of the pro-gram. A-State posted at least 400 yards of total offense in seven games during the2010 campaign, the most ever as an NCAA FBS member.

ASU, ranked 42nd in the nation in scoring offense, finished the season averaging30 points a game and recorded at least 20 points in 11 consecutive games for the firsttime in school history. Freeze’s offense scored 46 touchdowns, including 23 on theground and 23 through the air, for the fourth most in school history and the most sincethe 1975 season. While the Red Wolves’ 23 passing touchdowns broke the schoolrecord, their 23 scores on the ground were the most by an ASU team since 2002. Their360 total points were the most since 1987 and tied the fourth most in ASU history.

Under Freeze, the A-State offense was among the most dangerous in the Sun BeltConference in 2010. The Red Wolves were ranked among the top two teams in theleague in scoring offense, passing offense, total offense, pass efficiency, red zone of-fense and first downs. In addition to its No. 40 national ranking in total offense and No.42 spot in scoring offense, ASU ranked among the top 50 teams in the nation in redzone offense at No. 28.

In addition to working as ASU’s offensive coordinator, Freeze was also the quarter-backs coach for the Red Wolves. Jenkins also started the 2006 season as a member of the Rotary Lom-bardi Award and Dave Rimington Award watch lists. In addition, he was amember of several preseason All-America and All-Sun Belt Conferenceteams and was regarded as one of the top centers in the nation.

Joining Mandich on the 2008 All-Sun Belt Conference Team was tackleMark Clemons, and the 2009 campaign saw Newton placed on the all-con-ference squad as well.

In 2004, Hiller coached Steven Gibbs who joined the Seattle Seahawks. In 2003, he coached first-team All-Sun Belt Conference performer KimaniJones, who has experience playing in the AFL. In 2002, Hiller coached All-American Garry Johnson who went on to the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals aswell as second-team All-Sun Belt player John Crossley.

A-State Football Inks First Signing Class Under Freeze

Twenty-four high school and junior college standouts from seven different states have signed with the RedWolves to make up their first signing class under new head coach Hugh Freeze.

“We are very excited about our 2011 signing class, especially being shortened on our staff size,” said Freeze. “Ithought it was a remarkable effort. I’m very pleased that we got everyone today that we anticipated along witha couple of additions. I thought our needs were met in our offensive line and at defensive back, and depth wasadded at wide receiver. I’m excited about the entire class, which includes six players from Arkansas that I thinkare tremendous athletes and will improve our football team immediately.”

The Red Wolves’ first recruiting class under Freeze is made up 14 high school players, including one invited walk-on, and 10 junior college transfers. Don Jones (DB), Anthony Kincy (TE), James Williams (OL) and Ronnell Wright(DL) are among the 10 JUCO players that will continue their careers with the Red Wolves after inking during themid-term signing period.

Included in the 14 high school players that are set to join ASU are 10 all-state selections. The Red Wolves’ alsosigned six players that received a three-star or higher ranking at some point during their careers by a recruitingweb site.

The Red Wolves signed six offensive linemen, the most among any position, and have currently signed 13 play-ers expected to play on the offensive side of the ball. Including four defensive backs, A-State signed seven de-fensive players and an additional four players listed as athletes that could potentially play defense as well.

Six players from Arkansas are included in the class, followed by five from Alabama and California, four from Mis-sissippi, two from Tennessee and one from both Arizona and Georgia.
