ARLE SIG ROLE at Hildesheim University in June 2018 – [email protected] The Special Interest Group ROLE of the International Association for Research in L1 Education, ARLE, is organising a research seminar on Interaction in the Literature Classroom in June 2018 at Hildesheim University, Germany. Research communities in literature education generally agree on the importance of dialogue as a means for learning experiences and allowing in-depth-encounters with literature (Janssen/Pieper [ed.s] 2009; Brindley/Juzwik/Whitehurst [ed.s] 2016). However, to describe the quality of interaction, grasp learning processes or simply reconstruct what is going on in class regularly appears to be a challenge for researchers. With regard to improving teaching sound knowlege on how to design and moderate meaningful dialogue in the literature classroom is to be wished for. The aim of the seminar is to provide insights into different approaches to research on interaction in the literature classroom as a means of learning and discuss ongoing research in an international context. In two workshops empirical data from both plenary and peer group discussions about reading experiences and approaches to literature will be tackled by a group of experts and by the conference community. Data consist in video-/audiofiles and/or transcripts of the respective dialogues (original language and English translation). Methodological approaches will range from the development and application of coding schemes to sequential analysis. Besides, the seminar offers opportunities for PhD-candidates and Postdocs in research in literature education to present and discuss their work based on posters and short presentations. The projects need not fit the theme of the research seminar. References: Tanja Janssen & Irene Pieper (ed.s) (2009): Verbal interaction and literary understanding.
