During the week, Arlington Mill Se-nior Center is a bustle with various programs and activities for adults over the age of 55, but not many peo-ple know about weekend activities.

One of Arlington Mill’s most active weekend programs is the Photogra-phy Interest Group, which meets a few Sundays a month.

Throughout the year, the group selects different locations in the sur-rounding DMV area to meet at and as a group, complete a “photo safari” snapping pictures of anything that appears interesting along the way. The group has traveled to George-town, Adam’s Morgan, Old Town Al-

exandria, to name a few. The pho-to above was taken during a trip to Tudor Place Historic House Garden in Washington DC. Participants co-ordinate with Didem by email ([email protected]) ahead of time and chose a meet up loca-tion, as participants meet on site.

In addition to the safaris, partici-pants also meet up back at the center to share their photos with each other in whats called a “photo review ses-sion.”

In February, the group met at the center to learn more about the dig-ital editing program Adobe Light-room Photoshop.

Many more trips are being planned for the upcoming year. If you’re in-terested in joining the group but missed the meet up, its never too late. Email [email protected] to get on the email list and obtain additional details about upcoming events. You can also call the main center line at 703-228-7369 and ask for Nick Englund, center di-rector.

The group is very welcoming to newcomers, and enjoys being able to share the hobby with like-minded 55+ individuals.

Movies and CriticsMarch 21 & 26, 1-3:30pm

Ever wanted to be a movie critic? Now you can. Arlington Mill is now offering Movies & Critics, an interactive movie experience. Come just to enjoy the movie, or take notes during the film for a critical discussion afterwards.

No matter the size or location, ev-ery good organization has at least one dedicated, persistent, and reli-able volunteer that goes above and beyond for the betterment of their community. At Arlington Mill Senior Center, that volunteer is David Gray.

As the current Chair of the Arling-ton Mill Senior Advisory Commit-tee, David is a vital leader to the committee’s ongoing service to the center. Over the past year, the com-mittee has hosted several social events, fund-raisers, and initiatives.

Originally from Pittsburgh, David has been an Arlington County resi-dent for over 35 years, and as a re-tired travel agent, he knows a thing or two about different cultures and countries. In his spare time, one of David’s greatest passions is

listening to classical music. In ad-dition to volunteering at Arlington Mill, David leads a classical music appreciation group at Langston-Brown Senior Center every month. From hand selected pieces, the group listens together and analyzes each piece. “It’s a lot of fun.”

“Whether its through volunteering or sharing my passion for music, I enjoy helping others.”

On March 11, Arlington Mill will be getting a special visit from the group with a showing of “Music of Central Asia” which will accompa-ny video along with classical mu-sic. “We are excited to be bring-ing this feature to Arlington Mill and branch out to other areas.”

David’s willingness to help out has found him exploring new hobbies that he hasn’t before dabbled. “I have never been a gardener, but when the need for a garden committee leader rose, I stepped up to the task.” Da-vid is now the chair of the quickly expanding Garden Sub-Committee, that is working to beautify the court-yard area with a flower container garden.

David has been a committed volun-teer with Arlington’s Office of Senior Adult Programs for over four years, and is eager for more.

No matter what capacity, we are very thankful for all of our vol-unteers here at Arlington Mill, because without leaders like Da-vid, we would not be able to offer such quality programs as these.
