Armenia is a mountainous, landlocked country. It has a territory of 29,800sq.km (11,490 sq. miles), Armenia borders Georgia on the north, Turkey and Iran on the west. The territory of Armenia extends some 360 km long and 200 km wide the most of which ranges from 1000 to 2500 meters above sea level. It is situated on the same latitude as Spain, Italy. Armenia is divided into 11 provinces. There are more than 100 mountain lakes in Armenia. The largest one is Sevan Lake situated at an altitude of 1900 m above sea level.

Armenians are Apostolic, orthodox Christians. Armenians were the first to adopt Christianity in 301 A.D. as a state religion . Traditionally, the Armenian Church recognizes the Catholicos of All Armenians as its leader. He resides in the religious capital Holy Echmiadzin, where St. Gregory the Illuminator established the Armenian Church.RELIGION

Armenia has a population of 3,2 million people, of which 96 % are ethnic Armenians. Among minorities are Russians, Yezdis, Kurds, and Assyrians. Armenians are among Europes oldest and most distinct ethnic groups, having inhabited the area since the seventh century BC. POPULATION

Culture is an inseparable part of the Armenian history. During thousands of years, beginning with the Urartu epoch, Armenia underwent complicated and interesting cultural development. An excellent pattern of Hellenistic culture and the only preserved architectural monument of the 1st c. A.D. is the Temple of Sun in Garni. These influences enriched national culture. Another contribution to the development of national culture was the creation of Armenian alphabet and national written language by Mesrop Mashtots in 405. He was the first to translate the Bible. Yerevan the capital of Armenia is a very beautiful and small neat town. Archaeological evidence indicates that a military fortress called Erebuni stood on Yerevan's site as far back as the 8th century BC. In 782 B.C the Urartian king Argishti the first founded Erebuni the military and administrative center on the place of the present- day Yerevan. Since then the site has been strategically important as a crossroads for the caravan routes passing between Europe and India. It has been called Yerevan since at least the 7th century A.D.
