OZ & ARMONICO DRINK TO MUSIC!

It is a little known fact that writer, wine critic and broadcaster Oz Clarke was a singer for many years, starting at Canterbury, continuing with the Schola Cantorum, followed by both the Monteverdi Choir and the Academy of St Martin’s. In a completely unique programme presented cabaret style, Oz and Armonico Consort investigate the spurious links between wine from across the world and Baroque music. Featuring music from composers including Bach, Purcell and Vivaldi, plus some of the most upbeat Baroque dance music from South America, a highly entertaining evening is guaranteed!

HOLST INSPIREDA VERY BRITISH CELEBRATION

In an evening which explores the most beautiful music ever to have come from the British Isles, Armonico Consort brings to life a world which inspired the work of Gustav Holst, and the extraordinary legacy of those touched by what he left behind.

The works of Bach, Byrd and Blow had a huge influence on Gustav Holst, and indeed played a part in several of the festivals he programmed right here in Thaxted. Armonico Consort will aim to recreate those sounds of genius which touched Holst’s heart so dearly.

During the second half Armonico Consort, with the help of a guest narrator, will bring you the lighter side of music with a quirky look at what it means to be British.

THE CORONATION OF QUEEN ELIZABETH II

In the year of the Queen’s 90th birthday, Armonico Consort celebrates by recreating the sounds of her coronation at Westminster Abbey. Featuring music including Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Parry’s I Was Glad, Vaughan Williams’ Mass in G Minor and Walton’s Coronation Te Deum, the concert is narrated by former Royal Correspondent for the BBC, Jennie Bond.

REQUIEM BY FAURÉ & RUTTER “LULLABIES OF DEATH” (G. FAURÉ)

Fauré once said: “It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience.”

Inspired by Fauré, John Rutter’s Requiem is similarly optimistic in its message of hope and comfort. Even the darkest moments of this work are not frighteningly so, but rather shadowed, and those shadows disappear eventually.

It is impossible not to be moved by the ethereal beauty of these two masterpieces, and there’s no better way to experience them than in this performance by Armonico Consort led by Christopher Monks.

HANDEL’S FIREWORKSDETTINGEN TE DEUMTHE KING SHALL REJOICEMUSIC FOR THE ROYAL FIREWORKSZADOK THE PRIEST

Composed for the coronation of King George II, and performed at every coronation since, Zadok the Priest and The King Shall Rejoice have stamped their mark on music history as some of the most powerful and evocative works to have been composed for such an event.

Made up of 18 short movements for chorus and soloists, the Te Deum is one of Handel’s most splendid works, written to celebrate King George II’s triumphant return from the Battle of Dettingen in 1743.

The concert also features the famous Fireworks Music, composed in 1749 to accompany the royal celebrations for the ending of the War of the Austrian succession.

ST MATTHEW PASSION

International star Ian Bostridge joins the finest period instrumentalists and singers of Armonico Consort to bring Bach’s masterpiece to life. Whatever your own spiritual beliefs, everyone should hear St Matthew Passion at least once, and there’s no more immediate way to experience it than in this performance.

A work of genius, combining the most perfectly formed recitative with Bach’s most beautiful arias, the St Matthew Passion reflects on the emotional drama from the story of the Passion of Christ.

GIVING THE GIFT OF MUSICArmonico Consort is a professional choir and orchestra and a registered charity, dedicated to bringing innovative programmes to new audiences. Our core repertoire is the music of the renaissance and baroque periods, but we perform a range of music from Hildegard of Bingen to new works by present-day composers, including our composer-in-residence, Toby Young.

Alongside this, we run educational projects across the West Midlands and beyond to create new choirs in schools where music provision is currently limited or non-existent. We train teachers in the skills they need to rehearse and

conduct a choir, to select repertoire, and crucially to keep a choir going after our support for them ends. We reach thousands of children every year through these exciting projects, and offer them amazing performance opportunities. We also run a variety of other activities, from after-school choirs to musical theatre projects, to allow young people to develop their musical passions.

We currently receive no regular public funding for this work, and so we are reliant on the generosity of grant-giving trusts and our regular donors and supporters to keep on making amazing music in schools and concert halls.

IF YOU FEEL INSPIRED BY OUR WORK, PLEASE CONSIDER BECOMING A PATRON.

You can join our Patrons Scheme for an annual donation of as little as £72, which can be paid by monthly Direct Debit.

For more information on how to support us, please contact Nick Drew, Development and Planning Manager: [email protected] / 01926 800109 (choose option 3)
