OUR PHILOSOPHY

Arncliffe West Infants School (AWIS) provides a safe, friendly,

nurturing environment for preschool aged children. We believe that a

fun, dynamic environment promotes stimulation of the mind and

exploration of knowledge. AWIS is a place where children are

respected, encouraged and challenged to be the best they can be.

Our philosophy is centred on play-based learning where

children are the creators of their knowledge and teachers are the

facilitators. AWIS uses the Early Years Learning Framework as a

foundation for programming and reporting. Children learn to develop a

strong sense of identity, be connected with and contribute to their

world, develop a strong sense of wellbeing, become confident and

involved learners and become effective communicators.

The indoor and outdoor environments are based on a number of

learning areas including dramatic play, mathematics, construction,

creative arts, science, technology, natural spaces, puzzles, sensory,

music and literacy. This ensures that children are provided with a

holistic view of education and caters for varied interest and cultural

heritage.

Our program promotes individual exploration across the

learning areas using open-ended activities and resources. Resources

are used to stimulate interesting lines of enquiry and are tailored to

individual need and interest. We integrate ICT into our learning

environment through shared use of our SMART board and iPads where

ideas can be further explored through the internet and educational

apps.

PRESCHOOL HOURS: 9:30 to 3:30 during school terms

The preschool doors open at 9:30am and are locked at 10.30am for the safety

reasons. If you arrive after 10.30am you will need to knock and we will let you in. If

it is raining doors will open at 9.15am but you must stay with your child until 9.30am.

Preschool finishes at 3:30pm and the gates open at 2.30pm. If you child has not

been collected by 3.30 you will need to collect them from the main office at the ‘big’

school. Please remember that children get anxious if you are late to pick them up.

Each child must be accompanied to and from Preschool by a parent or person over 18

years of age. Your child needs to be signed in and out of the preschool. If someone

else is to pick up your child (eg grandmother, aunt) you must make arrangements

with the school before pick-up time and send the nominated person along with proof

of identity. Otherwise we cannot release your child.

Arncliffe West Infants School, cater for Australian government preschool

requirements by providing a 5 day fortnight at Preschool. The preschool groups

attend in for a 2or 3 day week on a rotating basis.

GETTING STARTED: Before starting Preschool- Talk to your child about going to Preschool. This could

be done by reading a story about going to a Preschool, a discussion of the types of

activities he/she may do at a Preschool and the new friends he/she will meet.

DAILY REQUIREMENTS: Each day, your child will need to bring a bag containing:

A spare change of clothes

A healthy lunch and a drink.

A piece of fruit for fruit snack time. Please label with your child’s name

and place in the tray provided at Preschool.

A bottle of water.

PLEASE LABEL YOUR CHILD’S CLOTHES, LUNCHBOX AND DRINK BOTTLES

CLEARLY WITH HIS/HER NAME SO THEY CAN IDENTIFY THEIR OWN

BELONGINGS.

SUNCARE: We start our day outside and the children to wear hats that are kept at school

(these are washed regularly). If you want your child to wear sunscreen please

apply it at home and send it to school if you want it re-applied during the day.

stir fry, pasta salads, pita pockets with meat, cheese and salad and baked beans.

OTHER INFORMATION:

Sickness- If your child is sick; please do not send them to Preschool, as

they will pass on any infections to other children and the staff. If your child

becomes sick at Preschool we will give you a call and will expect you to come

and collect your child.

If your child is not coming to Preschool, please give us a call or message us

through the Schoolbag app (See p10 for instructions). It is important that

we know if your child is sick so we can watch for other children with similar

symptoms. For infectious diseases, all quarantine periods will be adhered to

and we will enforce this for both your child’s health and the other children in

our care.

School Counsellor- we have a counsellor available at the school for any

families who may need extra support or assistance for their child. Please let

us know if you need a referral.

Communication- in the Preschool foyer, you will have your own information

pocket. In these pockets you will find newsletters, receipts and other

information for you to read. If you see anything in your child’s pocket, it is

for you to take. Please check daily.

Getting involved– We welcome helpers in the preschool for our fundraising

and celebrations throughout the year. There is also a very active and

friendly P&C that support the school with fundraising and special events

throughout the year. It is a great way to get to know other parents in the

community.

Changes of address- You must update your details if anything changes

otherwise we have no contact information for emergencies. Please see the

Office or use the Schoolbag app (See p10 for instructions).

Lorraine, Christine and Lynne hope you and your child enjoy your time with us

this year at Preschool

STEP UP-TO-SCHOOL PROGRAM Our Preschool is in the unique position of being part of a public school and as such

we are able to offer the opportunity to make an easy transition between preschool

and the ‘big school’.

During the year your child is in preschool, the STEP UP-TO-SCHOOL Program will

include the following:

Borrowing books and participating in Library sessions

Experiencing joint music sessions with Kindergarten

A buddy program with the Year 1 students (who will then be in Year 2 when your

child starts school.)

Attending assemblies and sharing in the award system

Arabic language lessons from our community language teacher Mrs Sabra

English support from our specialist English language teacher Mrs Lane

Familiarization with their future teachers through lunchtime exchanges

A week of our ‘Transition-To-School’ program in Term 4 where children come

and experience the Kindergarten classroom and routine for 5 consecutive

mornings.

As a result we find that pre-schoolers entering Kindergarten are well adapted to

life at Arncliffe West Infants and benefit from being able to continue their

education with their preschool friends, supported by their Year 2 buddies.

“Fundamental to the Framework is a view of children’s lives

as being characterised by belonging, being and becoming. From before birth children are connected to family, com-

munity, culture and place. Their earliest development and

learning takes place through these relationships, particu-

larly within families, who are the children’s first and most

influential educators. As children participate in everyday

life, they develop interests and construct their own identi-

ties and understandings of the world” Belonging, Being &

Becoming: the Early Years Learning Framework for Austral-

ia: Commonwealth of Australia 2009: Page 7

At AWIS Preschool we implement the Early Years Learning

Framework (EYLF) for Australia into our daily practice.
