Huge attendance for local Canada Day events

OPP officer Craig Taylor is outranked by two-year-old RCMP officer Parker Bradley. Officer Bradley had his mom Melanie Parker in handcuffs for keeping him from the Canada Day cake at Robert Simpson Park.

Virtually every event for Canada Day in Arnprior and McNab-Braeside was not only well attended but overflowing this year.

The beautiful warm weather, sunny skies and Tues-day date meant most people were ready to celebrate given the wet weather so far this summer and people were not away for a weekend trip to the cottage.

Beginning with the Lion’s club breakfast in Arn-prior, organizers report a record number of diners, with the club running out of sausages toward the end of the morning.

Meanwhile the parade in Braeside was larger than in past years, making it tough for the judges to choose the winners with everyone colourfully decorated in their best red and white.

Crowds lined the River Road waiting for a glimpse of their neighbours in the annual event.

Back in Arnprior there were also record numbers of parade participants and plenty of people lining John Street to watch.

Robert Simpson Park was busy as early as noon with the official opening events and entertainment through-out the afternoon.

The cake was cut and Molly Luhta had a moving ren-dition of O’Canada.

Children’s entertainment and bands played in the park, while on Daniel Street, an impromptu stage was set up behind Jenny’s Diner and Buster Brown and other entertainers brought people from one end down-town to the other.

The museum open house brought a steady stream of visitors to see the new exhibits inside as well as the special displays set up outside.

Drivers had to take special care near the corner of Madawaska and John streets to avoid the large crowds of walkers travelling from Robert Simpson Park, stop-ping to enjoy an ice cream, visiting the museum and then heading across the bridge to see the car show at Hydro Park East.

Continued from frontWhile not as large a car show as

some in the past, the park was still a major attraction with both antique and custom vehicles of all sizes and descriptions.

It was also the best vantage point to watch the rubber duck release put on by the Rotary Club at 2 p.m.

That fundraiser was completely sold out more than a week before Can-ada Day and the club promises to increase the availability of the ducks for next year.

The lawn tractor races at the Brae-side RA centre were also well attended and as in past years the participants put on a pretty good show, though it was difficult to tell who won and who was disqualified! A good time was had by all however.

Of course the fireworks show

wrapped up the day just after dusk from below the Madawaska Bridge in downtown Arnprior.

Huge crowds filled both the east and west Hydro parks, and parking was at a premium everywhere within sight of the display.

The 45-minute display was the best in recent memory, under perfect skies, with many comments heard that it was one of the best seen so far.

The fire department and the Canada Day committee, along with the orga-nizers in Braeside deserve a big hand for what seemed to be the best Canada Day celebrations in recent memory.

Residents also deserve a big thank you for turning out in big numbers and enjoying the local events put on for your benefit.

Braeside was certainly in the mood for a Canada Day party in proper attire. This decked out fellow was more than ready for the parade in the village. The parade was one of the largest in recent memory.

Another OLA protest at Horton Township offices

Niagara Landowners Association president Larry Honey travelled to Horton Township for Wednesday afternoon’s Ontario Landowners Association protest.

Protests at Horton Township offi ces contin-ued this week. On Wednesday afternoon, the Ontario Landowners Association again staged a protest against a lime-stabilization pilot project being built next to the dairy farm of Cindy and Larry Reid. Left, Frontenac, Len-nox and Addington Landowners Association president Ed Kennedy addresses maybe 100 people during the protest next to the Horton municipal offices. Note the tape that sepa-rates him and Ontario Landowners Associa-tion president Jack MacLaren (to his immedi-ate left), from the Horton property. Kennedy and MacLaren said they will continue to speak out despite being charged by the OPP with mischief and receiving a restraining order. They are to refrain from speaking to Larry and Cindy Reid as well as Horton CAO Mackie McLaren. The first members to be charged in OLA history, they say they will con-tinue to fight to protect the Larry and Cindy Reid dairy farm, to push for better legislation, and to move the site of the septage treatment plant. Courtesy of OWL Rafting on the Ottawa River, the MS Support Group and spouses enjoyed an hour-long, pontoon-boat cruise on the river near Foresters Falls June 11. The support group for those with multiple sclerosis, a progressive neurological dis-ease, meets monthly in Ren-frew’s Trinity-St. Andrew’s United Church to share experiences and educational material. The group, which consisted of members from Foresters Falls, Renfrew, Arnprior and area, enjoyed the river ride and a steak dinner. Comments

Just in case you missed it...

Just in case you missed Tuesday’s copy of the Arn-prior Chronicle-Guide, here are briefs of some of the stories we are following:

* A group of Renfrew County business people and residents spoke to Renfrew County council about the urgent need to expand broadband access in the county. We had the story on the front page of the July 1 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide.

* Our graduation coverage continued in the July 1 Chronicle-Guide. Pick up a copy and see who cel-ebrated at McNab Public School, St. Joseph’s Catho-lic School, Pakenham Public School, John XXIII and the Young Parent Support Program.

* The number of farms in Renfrew County is

declining, says the Renfrew County Agricultural Development committee. We had an article about a report presented to Renfrew County council in the July 1 edition of the Arnprior Chronicle-Guide.

Don’t miss this...Here are some of the items we will be looking at for

this Tuesday’s Chronicle-Guide:

* A McNab Public School student has received a special award for her work in the school’s Anne of Green Gables production. Pick up next Tuesday’s paper for a story on the accomplished young actor.

* While you see some photos from Canada Day in this Weekender, be sure to get a copy of next week’s Arnprior Chronicle-Guide for more photos and results from the local events.

* A recent, powerful storm did some damage in McNab-Braeside Township. Pick up the Tuesday edition of the Chronicle-Guide for a look at what happened.

* More defibrillators will be available to the county, and not all will have to go to county-owned buildings. Pick up the July 8 Arnprior Chronicle-Guide for details.

For complete coverage of these and other news sto-ries about Arnprior and area, you can pick up a copy of the Chronicle-Guide on sale each Tuesday at local stores or at our office, 116 John St. North, located in downtown Arnprior.

Something smelly at the pumpsIs it that long ago when

we were screaming at hav-ing to pay 80 cents a litre for gas?

Then we went absolute-ly wild when the price of gas crept up over a dollar.

Like everyone else, we tried to cut back on our driving as much as pos-sible.

Surely, the price couldn’t go much higher.

But of course, it could. And it did.

Every day, the business report on the radio tells us the cost of a barrel of oil. We cringe, and can do nothing as it creeps up to an unbelievable high. And the price at the pumps goes up with it.

There is nothing the lowly taxpayer can do. Well, I suppose there is. You can put your car up on blocks, buy a bicycle, ride the bus, walk, or if you have to get to work and none of the these alterna-

tives are possible, you can take early retirement.

As I said, there is little you and I can do about the high cost of gas.

But there certainly is something the federal and provincial governments can do.

Let’s just take a quick look at the tax you are pay-ing both levels of govern-ment at the pumps. First of all, there’s the five per cent GST. Then tack on

another 10 per cent provin-cial tax. And finally, add a whopping 14 per cent fed-eral tax to the bill.

What a cash-cow for the government coffers.

Do you honestly think any level of government is going to give us a break by lowering the tax?

Surely the two levels of government can see how very much the high cost of gas is affecting every aspect of our lives.

Transportation of goods, running farm implements, moving people from one place to another, the cost of manu-facturing everything from what we wear to what we eat, have all been affected by the high cost of gas.

A mystery to me is how, within eastern Ontario, the prices at the pumps can be so varied.

Bless you if you hap-pen to live on a highway. You are going to pay dear-

ly. If you live close to the Nation’s Capital, you are going to pay double-dear-ly.

If you don’t think this is a fact, let me give you an example of how the prices at the pumps can vary.

Last week, we paid $1.34 a litre for gas in Carleton Place. We visited our chil-dren in Gananoque, and the price was $1.23 ... that’s an 11-cent difference. How can there be such a vari-ance in prices?

Are we being ripped off ?

It is my belief we are. Something is smelly at the pumps and it isn’t only what is coming out of the nozzle.

One commentator last week said he expected the price to hit the $1.50 mark by mid summer.

Putting your car up on blocks is looking more and more like your only option.

Resource guides a useful tool for family research

When you begin a new phase of your research or are looking at material in a new country a very use-ful first step if to check out the resource guides at www.familysearch.org .

A menu in the right margin on the home page includes ‘guides.’

They have a list of 30 guides for a wide range of countries and research situations.

Of special interest are new ones for England (32p) and Scotland (26p). I have used their guides and found them very helpful. This is like a basic library on genealogical research and you can download and print the guides to have them handy for reference.

While you are on the site check out some of the other material that is available.

‘Reference documents’ are guides to historical information on the coun-try you are researching and can provide useful context for your research.

‘Research outlines’ for various countries provide great detail on search strategies and types of records.

‘Word lists’ are glos-saries of genealogical vocabulary in 15 different languages and they even have letter writing guides for eight languages.

There is a lot more to familysearch.org than name searching.

FRIENDS OF ARCHIVES

For a number of years researchers have been

saying something should be done about space and budgetary limitations that have constrained the City of Ottawa Archives for some time.

In 2003 a group of them decided to take the bull by the horns and do some-thing about it.

They formed a group called the Friends of the City of Ottawa Archives under the presidency of genealogist John J. Heney and set to work on a num-ber of fronts.

Theirs was a three-pronged advocacy role aimed at raising public awareness and usage; pro-moting policies and deci-sions in the interest of the archives; and seeing a new facility built for the col-lection.

The most dramatic out-come of this latter objec-tive has been the go-ahead for a new facility that will house the archives as well as the technical services that support the Ottawa Public Library.

Design is underway. Sod turning at Cen-

trepointe is expected next

spring toward completion of the project in 2010.

Another important Friends program is fund-raising in support of spe-cial projects normally beyond the Archives’ financial resources.

To date they have facili-tated the preservation of a number of the earliest council minute books to be found of the constitu-ent municipalities that were amalgamated to form today’s City of Ottawa.

FCOA recently launched an initiative to restore a portrait of Queen Victoria, commissioned by the city in 1890 and linked to her naming Ottawa as Canada’s capital.

The Friends also play a big role in the archives’ public programming. Every year they organize workshops and their pop-ular speakers’ series of talks, all of which support the study and enjoyment of our local history.

Their outstanding sup-port of the City of Ottawa Archives was recently recognized by city council when FCOA’s president, John Heney, was present-ed with this year’s Dis-tinguished Civic Award in the heritage category.

The archives is lucky in its friends.

To find out more about FCOA visit http://fcoa-aavo.ncf.ca, or call John at 613-224-6888.

Each week in conjunction with the Arn-prior and District Humane Society we fea-ture a pet ready for adoption.

This week we feature Tubby, just a bit of a wuss. He was found wandering around on Cranston Street. Tubby likes his own space and finds the shelter just a bit too much. Sweet and affectionate, this gentle boy loves attention and and being brushed. He loves children and is very gentle. This guy would be perfect for a home with young children and plenty of attention. Just ask for Mama's Boy #3058.

Olivia is a love bug. There is no other way to put it. She will follow you around looking for attention and she loves kids - as

long as they pet her! Olivia is almost too affectionate for her own good. She will play

with anyone, except dogs. Everyone must have some standards. Just ask for Ms. Congeniality #3057.

The shelter needs Whis-kas meaty selections cat food, paper towels, nylon dog collars and leashes, laundry soap and plastic gro-cery bags..

The shelter is open Mon-day to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., at 490 Didak Street. The number is 623-0916.

The shelter website is www.arnpriorhumanesociety.ca.

Leeman retires to forestry jobHarvey Leeman is an

unassuming kind of man who owns about 250 acres (102 hectares) of land just outside of Stewartville, Ontario.

He lives on his land in a conservative house with his wife Jackie.

By all accounts, Lee-man is quietly living out his retirement years as he likes in a beautiful bit of forest in eastern Ontario.

Nothing really out of the ordinary but if you look a little closer you would find that his for-est operations are far from ordinary.

Leeman’s forest is actu-ally one of only a handful of Forestry Stewardship Certified model forests in eastern Ontario.

FSC is an internation-al body that certifies the practice of environmen-tally-friendly, sustainable and ethical forest manage-ment.

FSC standards are con-sidered to be the highest in the world for eco-stew-ardship management practices which are also known to be endorsed by Greenpeace.

Leeman describes all the projects he has under-taken in his woodlots, wetlands and plantations over the years — as well as his plans for the future — with a passion.

He became self-educat-ed on sustainable forestry management practices by attending workshops at Kemptville College and Renfrew County Outdoor Woodlot conferences.

He has always got is head into some sort of eco-forestry book and receives on-going support and information as an active member of the Renfrew County Stewardship Pro-gram.

He understands as much as any horticultur-alist or biologist would about his forest and main-tains it in such a manner.

He has cultivated areas within his forest to increase the diversity of it, including meadowlands, forest edge and trails.

He leaves large dead white pines for birds of prey and woodpeckers. He plants thousands of specific native fruiting trees and bushes such as cranberry highbush and showy mountain ash for deer, wild turkeys and

other birds and animals to feed on well into the winter months.

He maintains seven wildlife feedlots and has been selected three con-secutive years in a row by the Ministry of Natural Resources as a landowner partner in their wildlife enhancement project.

Leeman sees his for-est in many ways; as a maple syrup producer, as a source of food and shelter for wild animals, a wood resource for build-ings, home heating and his maple syrup operation, a financial investment, an everyday adventure, a place to gain strength knowledge and healing, and as a diverse and thriv-ing model eco-system from which studies can be made by government, schools and environmental asso-ciations.

He considers his forest, wetland and meadow an inter-connected support system for every kind of native animal known to the area, from bears to mice.

He proudly points out some furry looking type of poo and proclaims it to be that of wolf, then fondly shows some deer tracks, brings your atten-tion to some recent pileat-ed wood-pecker construc-tion, scratches his head for a moment as he spies a chipmunk in his huge veg-etable garden and mum-bles ‘Now what’s he after?’ and then a moment later realizes it was the seeds of the green fertilizer project he is trying out this year.

Leeman ‘releases’ eco-logically important or close-to-extinct trees such as black cherry and but-ternut that he discovers in his forest by clearing around them to allow access to the sunlight.

He discovered sev-eral heritage apple trees that he prunes to create healthy apple harvests for deer to feed on.

He has created red and white pine and oak planta-tions, keeps old pioneer buildings found on his property because of their historical importance.

He maintains 23.5 acres (9.5 hectares) of wetlands and is about to embark on a new wetland habitat project with Ducks Unlim-ited.

As we finish off our

afternoon tour, we enjoy our conversation on his back deck where a large bird feeder sits only about six feet away from us and eventually the jays, chip-ping sparrows and rose breasted grosbeaks feel comfortable enough to fly in and join us.

He tells us his story about collecting more than 1,000 acorns for his oak plantation project and being robbed of them all by squirrels.

“You have to be more cunning than them,” he says as he points to a home-made kind of screened-in protection box for growing the oaks. Leeman enjoyed the challenges the squir-rels gave him, especially when he sees the fruits of his labour in a successful crop of young oaks hap-pily growing.

Harvey Leeman is a man who lives his beliefs and walks the talk. In a world today full of lip ser-vice, he is a true natu-ralist and keeper of the earth doing his job of leav-ing it a better place for all the future generations to come.

Although Harry Leeman is enjoying his retirement years, he’s doing so by working one of only a handful of Forestry Stewardship Certified model forests in eastern Ontario.

MP Gallant speaks at Pembroke Kiwanis Club meetingThe following article was pro-

vided by the office of Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant.

Cheryl Gallant, MP Ren-frew-Nipissing-Pembroke, was pleased recently to address the Kiwanis Club of Pembroke on the Opposition proposal to levy a “tax on everything” or so-called carbon tax on all Canadians.

“I was pleased to re-assure Kiwanis Club members that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has made it very clear that our policy is to reduce taxes. Our government has no intention of raising new taxes for a new gun registry, or any other silly prom-ise by the opposition. The liberal gun registry was supposed to be ‘revenue neutral,’ just like the proposed carbon tax. That bad idea ending up costing taxpay-ers over a billion dollars,” said Gallant.

A carbon tax is described as the GST on steroids. It will lit-

erally be a permanent tax on everything. While the direct cost per household will depend on many different factors, at minimum, a broad based carbon tax will increase costs for each Canadian by about $100 a year for every $10 charged per tonne of carbon dioxide.

That calculation does not include the impact on the tens of thousands of Canadians

who face unemployment or the fact that GST type taxes impact most heavily on low wage, fixed income households, particularly students, seniors and the dis-abled.

“Local residents already con-cerned over the high cost of energy will be in for the shock of their lives when they go to the gas pumps or open their home heating fuel bill if Stepha-

ne Dion gets his way. The only way to guard against a future tax increase of this magnitude is to make sure Dion and his party are never elected,” said Gallant.

While we can measure direct costs, indirect costs promise to be significantly higher.

Higher fuel prices increase costs throughout the economy by increasing the costs of trans-portation, production and dis-tribution of virtually all goods and services in the economy. Businesses will be obligated to pass on these costs to house-holds, creating a vicious, and inflationary spiral.

The reason given for a new carbon tax is to reduce green-house gas emissions. The truth of the matter is a carbon tax has less to do with the environ-ment and everything to do with economics.

The proposed carbon tax is designed to transfer the wealth of rural Canada where we pro-

duce the vast agriculture, min-eral, forestry, fisheries and ener-gy wealth of this nation to the urban centres. From the urban centres, the Kyoto Accord kicks in. Kyoto is a United Nations treaty designed to transfer wealth from the developed world from countries like Canada, to the developing world by charg-ing the developed countries for the right to emit carbon.

It is no wonder that 143 devel-oping nations, led by China, did not sign onto Kyoto to reduce carbon emissions, or the incon-venient truth that when Al Gore was US Vice-President, the USA, the largest economy in the devel-oped world, refused to ratify the Kyoto Accord.

A carbon tax will put severe restrictions on our economy and place Canada at a significant disadvantage when it comes to trading with countries that have no such restrictions on their industrial activity.

Federal NDP welcome critic for agriculture and agri-food at AGMThe following article

was provided by the Ren-frew-Nipissing-Pembroke federal NDP.

On June 18, the Ren-frew-Nipissing-Pembroke federal NDP held its annu-al general meeting at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Guest speaker Alex Ata-manenko, NDP Member of Parliament, whose rural B.C. riding encompasses great distances much like ours, spoke to a receptive audience on the need for a national food policy in Canada.

He was introduced by Sue McSheffrey, president of the federal Riding Asso-ciation.

Renfrew was his first stop on the NDP nation-al Food For Thought tour, which was recently launched in Ottawa by party leader Jack Layton.

Atamanenko will be meeting with local com-munities across the coun-try at the grassroots level to invite views, comments and suggestions for a Canadian food policy.

The result will be a report with recommen-dations that will be sub-mitted to the federal gov-ernment to help guide them in developing and implementing a Canadian National Food Policy.

According to the NDP agriculture critic Ata-

manenko, the issue of food security is very complex and should be a non-parti-san issue.

It involves many con-siderations such as trade agreements, climate change, transportation and energy issues, all of which have ramifications, both nationally and inter-nationally.

“We as Canadians want a safe, secure, afford-able food supply that also allows our farmers to make a decent living,” stated Atamanenko.

This sentiment was echoed by the audience and a lively discussion took place following the MP’s remarks.

Audience members included NDP party mem-bers as well as farmers concerned about their future.

The need for food sov-ereignty i.e. food grown in Canada for Canadian con-sumption, was the over-whelming response from those attending.

For those who are inter-ested in voicing their opin-ions but were not able to attend the meeting, a short questionnaire is available from Sue McSheffrey and can be mailed back to Ata-manenko’s office free of charge.

Please e-mail Sue at [email protected] or phone her at 613-432-7208.

Loretta Rice, retired dairy farmer and NFU member asks a question at the Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke federal NDP annual general meeting.

TD Canada Trust pledges $20,000TD Canada Trust pledg-

es $20,000 to the Partners in Caring Campaign to renovate the Emergency Department at Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital.

“TD and its employ-ees are committed to helping to build vibrant, healthy communities. We are proud to support the Arnprior and District Memorial Hospital which plays such an important role in ensuring that each and every one of us in this community receives the best possible health

care” said Sandra Coker, Branch Manager, TD Can-ada Trust.

Partners in Caring Campaign team member and Foundation Board member, Bob Bouchard, accepted the cheque pre-sented by Marie Shank, Sandra Coker, Sharon Chesworth and Tanya Ceasar.

“We are fortunate to live in a very caring and gen-erous community,” added Sharon Chesworth, Man-ager Customer Service, “and at TD, we believe that together we can make a

difference!”Bob Bouchard com-

mented, “The Partners in Caring Campaign Team greatly appreciates the donation made by the TD Canada Trust. We thank the Manager, San-dra Coker, and her staff for their local support in obtaining this corporate donation.”

The board of directors for the Foundation and Campaign express their appreciation to the com-munity and all donors supporting the ongoing fundraising. The Part-

ners in Caring Campaign to renovate and equip the emergency department at Arnprior & District Memo-rial Hospital has raised more than $2.7 million — surpassing the target required for the communi-ty portion of construction costs. Now the campaign faces the final challenge: Raising the final $800,000 to ensure that the reno-vated emergency depart-ment has the necessary equipment required to assess, monitor and treat the urgent needs of our patients.

From left to right, Marie Shank, Bob Bouchard, Sandra Coker, Sharon Chesworth and Tanya Ceasar pose with a replica cheque depicting the TD Canada Trust $20,000 donation to the Arnprior hospital.

Weekend of family fun and free fishingCanadians may fish licence-free in

Ontario waters during the Ontario Family Fishing Weekend from July 4 through July 6.

More than 50 local family fishing events, derbies and festivals across the province will offer anglers valu-able fishing tips and advice and an opportunity to learn good conserva-tion practices.

Some locations will provide the use of rods and reels courtesy of the Ontario Federation of Angers and Hunters’ Tackle Share program.

During family fishing weekend, anglers fishing without a licence must follow the conservation licence limits

set out in the Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary. Infor-mation on these limits will also be available onsite at most local events.

The annual Family Fishing Weekend is supported by the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, the Canadian Sportfishing Industry Association, the Canadian National Sportfishing Foun-dation, the Northern Ontario Tourist Outfitters Association and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as well as many local sponsors.

“Fishing is a great way for fami-lies and friends to spend quality time together outdoors,” said Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield.

“Our annual Family Fishing Weekend is a chance for Ontarians of all ages to experience the joys of fishing and learn about the importance of keep-ing our natural environment clean, healthy and abundant.”

QUICK FACTS • Ontario’s Family Fishing Weekend

takes place during National Fishing Week, which runs from July 5-13, 2008.

• Ontario is home to160 of Canada’s 228 species of freshwater fish.

MuchMusic dance a huge success, any ideas for programming? The MuchMusic dance

was a huge success. There were many youth who had the opportunity to listen to the hottest music while watching the best videos. We had a lot of prizes to hand out that night as well to our excellent dancing kings and queens. Con-grats to all the winners.

A special thanks to the more than 30 volunteers who came by to help out at the dance. Without your support, we would not have been able to hold such a great event for the youth of Arnprior and area. Another special thanks goes out to Tim Hortons for graciously supplying our volunteers with coffee and tea and to M and R Feeds for loan-ing us the troughs to serve

cold drinks.Another great part of

the night was the reward for the youth for being active this winter. Because of our high participation numbers in the Tween Dances and other Win-terActive programs, we won the Community Chal-

lenge Award from Parks and Recreation Ontar-io for being one of the most active communities in Ontario. Because this award was made possible by the youth, we handed out free freezies to every-one at the Much Dance.

SummerActive has ended and our lucky win-ners are Cory Herbert, Abby Rampton, Jonathan Shean, Gerard Hogue, Brady Leckie, Kyle Hip-kin, Logan Georgison and Katie Power. These youth got out and got active dur-ing May and June and they got to pick from our array of great getaway prizes. These prizes were all donated from local busi-nesses and we want to give a great thanks to each and every business for being

so gracious to the youth of Arnprior.

The donated prizes were: Two $50 gift cer-tificates to Bonnechere Caves, a wondrous place to visit fossils and caves from millions of years ago, one adult and one child guided ATV tour pass to Calabo-gie Run, a family trail pass to beautiful Pinto Valley Ranch, a horseback and animal farm located just 10 minutes from Arnprior, four passes, two adventure and two casual to ride the whitewater rapids at Wil-derness Tours Resort, go karting and mini putt passes to spend the day at Karter’s Korner, a fam-ily fun park in Stittsville,

and lastly, four golf passes and four sky ride passes to Calabogie Peaks Resort and their executive golf course, Ironwoods. To all winners, have fun get-ting out and getting more active with these great get-away prizes.

A special thanks to all youth who got out and got active during SummerAc-tive. We had hundreds of youth who got involved, even more than during WinterActive. Keep it up Arnprior!

Don’t forget to register for our Learn To…Faux Stain Glass! Carol Parker will be instructing how to make beautiful works of art for your home. Regis-

tration is $6 and all reg-istrations must be in one week in advance. The date of the program is July 14 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Are you looking for a particular program? We are getting together all our fall and winter Programs right now. If you have a particular Learn To…idea or you think a specific program or special event would be great for youth aged nine to 18, contact Kayla at 613-623-7301 or via e-mail at [email protected]. With so many youth becoming involved, we have to continue to grow our programs and we need everyone’s help with ideas and concepts.

The Arnprior Rotary Club’s first annual Mad Duck Race got underway from the Madawaska Bridge at 2 p.m. Canada Day. The lucky winners of $1,000 were Owen and Max Kelland, ages 5 and 7, from Arnprior. They plan to split the money. The duck was bought for them by grandma and grandpa. The Rotary Club apologized to those who were not able to purchase a duck as they sold out so quickly and promised make the contest even bigger and better for next year.

Canada Day 2008

Don Gougeon and Bob Bennett were kept busy serv-ing the Lions Canada Day breakfast to a record num-ber of diners.

This 1967 Chevelle SS was one of many vintage cars at Hydro Park East next to the Quality Inn on Canada Day. The car show was a big draw.

Keeping up with the Arnprior Parade, these young-sters were dressed in Canada Day chic. The parade was very well attended.

It’s quite a balancing act during Arnprior’s Canada Day parade for this young fellow. The parade began at about 11:30 a.m. Saturday and ended at Robert Simpson Park for opening festivities. Watch for more photos in next Tuesday’s Chronicle-Guide Newspaper.

The committee consists of, above, from left, Sam Dicks, Penny Lamendeau, Glenn Arthur, Elta Watt (founder and president of the breast cancer support group), Hyacinth Chatterton (founder/committee chair WWMM), Ola Armstrong, Margaret Bahm, Callysta Bastien, Crystal LaRose (co-ordinator Partners in Caring) and Norm Watt (vice-chair WWMM committee). Missing from photo are: Arnprior Mayor Terry Gibeau, Rita Clouthier, Jesse Martins, Wanda Monuk, Debbie Bertrand, Monique Dodds, Brian Stashick and Faye Vinet. While the walk was held in the evening for the first time in its history, organizers have decided to move it back to a morning time slot to suit family participation better.

Canada’s first pet discovery centre

The new 16,000 square feet of public space on the waterfront at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre will be a one-stop resource for information designed to foster a healthy and happy relationship between pets and their guardians.

PawsWay is a project of the Purina PetCare Lega-cy, a special fund designed to support initiatives in the pet community that improve the lives of pets.

PawsWay offers a per-manent and rotating exhib-it with events and interac-tive learning opportuni-ties throughout the year. In addition, PawsWay will feature ongoing program-ming to provide activities for regular visitors such as:

• How pets talk — What does their body language mean? Learn how to read their non-verbal messag-es.

• All things puppy and kitten — How to make the right breed choice.

• Tips on pet-proofing before a puppy or kitten comes home.

• Crate training basics and more.

• How old is your pet? — Always thought your feline friend was seven times his age in people years? Think again!

• Doggie dance routine

— Witness a canine free-style routine to music and get inspired to dance at home with your dog!

• Weekly expert forum — Pet experts will be on hand to answer questions about nutrition, train-ing and provide general advice to both new and experienced pet owners.

PawsWay is also the proud new home of the Purina Animal Hall of Fame, a recognition pro-gram that honours Cana-dian pets and service ani-mals that have helped to save a human life.

For the first time, the public will be able to explore the hall of fame and learn all about the awe-inspiring acts of cour-age, bravery and loyalty demonstrated by Canadi-an dogs, cats and even one horse.

Pat, the first inductee in 1968 saved his owner’s life by towing his oarless boat for more than three hours on the St.Lawrence River to safety!

Traditionally, the hall of fame has been dis-played in the Purina Can-

ada office lobby in Missis-sauga, Ontario, and is now being unveiled to the pub-lic in its permanent home at PawsWay Pet Discovery Centre.

Other centre highlights include Williams Coffee Pub, with a pet-friendly seating area where people can sit with their dogs, both indoors and out, and enjoy a coffee or a snack.

Visitors to PawsWay can also peruse the gift shop, featuring unique pet-related merchandise for sale.

For anyone inter-ested in experiencing the Discovery Centre, which opens to the pub-lic on June 21, PawsWay is located on the water at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre, 245 Queen’s Quay West beside the Radisson Admiral Hotel.

Summer hours are Monday-Wednesday-Fri-day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sun-day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and best of all the general admission is free.

TWO DOGS POISONEDTwo dogs died and at

least six more are ill after ingesting ethylene glycol, found in antifreeze, while out for a weekend romp in the off-leash section of High Park called Dog Hill. Police found antifreeze in two drinking pans next to a hydrant that pumps water for dogs and in a pile of soggy bread that may have been soaked in antifreeze as well.

Just four years ago, a

number of pets were poi-soned in Withrow Park, in the city’s east end. Pub-lic health officials found hotdogs laced with insecti-cide, but never caught the person responsible.

TEMPERATURES ON THE RISE

Just a reminder, pets, summer heat and vehicles do not mix.

Even in the shade with the windows ajar, a vehi-cle can quickly reach well over 120 degrees F.

While heading out to do your errands do your pet a favour and leave them at home.

Common causes of heat stroke in dogs include exercising strenuously in hot humid weather, suf-fering from either heart or lung diseases, which interfere with efficient breathing, or being con-fined to asphalt or con-crete surfaces.

Do not exercise your pet between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Make sure while out with your pet plenty of fresh water is available.

Dogs with short snouts (also called brachycephal-ic) such as Pugs, Bulldogs, or Pekingese have a harder time staying cool. If your pet lives outdoors, make sure they have plenty of drinking water available and a shady place to rest.

Older, nursing or pets with health concerns are more susceptible to heat stroke.

Pets with little or no fur are more prone to sun-burn and should be kept out of the sun at peaks

times throughout the day and be protected with a sun block like Ombrelle SPF30 for children.

Signs of heat stroke include excessive panting, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, diarrhea and unconscious-ness.

Treatment must be immediate and include lowering the body temper-ature with a cool bath or by spraying with a garden hose.

While transporting your pet to the veterinar-ian, place ice packs on the

head to keep the body tem-perature stable.

With the threat of heart worm pets should be kept indoors at dawn and dusk to avoid exposure to mos-quitoes.

Have a safe and dog-gone great summer!

FriendshipBy Judy Bielicki

It is often said that it is love that makes the world go round. However, without doubt, it is friendship which keeps our spinning existence on an even keel. True friendship provides so many of the essentials for a happy life-it is the foundation on which to build an enduring relationship, it is the mor-tar which bonds us together in harmony, and it is the calm, warm protection we sometimes need when the world outside seems cold and chaotic. True friendship holds a mirror to our foibles and failings, without destroying our sense of worthi-ness. True friendship nurtures our hopes, supports us in our disappointments, and encourages us to grow to our best po-tential. We remember Crystal’s strength, warmth, and most importantly, true friendship.

We miss you very much, but our love and memories will al-ways be there.

Love,

Natalie, Andrea, Jenny, and Amy

Be cautious in an atypical bond marketStocks have not been

alone in experiencing a lot of volatility in 2008. There have also been some dramatic changes in the bond market. Many fixed-income investors are con-fused because prices of investment-grade qual-ity bonds typically go up when the economy slows and stock markets decline. But recently, bond prices have not increased in that type of environment and some have actually dropped. A key factor in explaining this dynamic relates to the U.S econ-omy. Bond prices have been negatively impacted by the fallout from the U.S. subprime mortgage issues that have plagued the housing and mortgage

markets and fuelled a sig-nificant credit crunch. In fact, some of the compa-

nies that have been most heavily impacted have had their bonds downgraded

by rating agencies.

problems have particu-larly impacted bonds of financial services compa-nies. In some cases, credit ratings were downgraded. This has caused the prices of the bonds they issue to also decline, in some cases dramatically.

Another important fac-tor to consider relates to how in recent years there had been little difference in rates among bonds with different credit ratings. This is unlike the typical situation, in which bonds with lower ratings need to offer relatively high-er rates to entice inves-tors due to their greater degree of risk. As a result, in today’s uncertain envi-

ronment where there has been a “flight to quality,” we have seen particular-ly severe price drops for high-yield bonds.

To determine how you should adjust your bond holdings in the current environment, you might want to consider the fol-lowing actions:

Diversify: While diver-sification does not guar-antee a profit or protect against loss in a declining market, you may find it’s most prudent to own bonds from various issuers in different sectors or indus-tries because the bond prices of similar issuers tend to move alike.

Own an appropriate amount of aggressive income: When a bond’s

rating is below invest-ment grade, you can con-sider it to be an ‘aggres-sive-income’ investment. You may find it’s best to restrict this category of investment to no more than five per cent of your portfolio. If the rating of a bond you own is down-graded, it could cause you to exceed that five per cent weighting. You and your financial advisor will then need to assess if the bond and the amount you own remain appropriate.

Continue to hold the bonds of financial compa-nies: As a rule of thumb, you might find broad price fluctuation is not sufficient reason to sell the bonds of financial companies, unless they

are no longer appropriate for you or if you are overly concentrated in financial company bonds or fixed income in general. How-ever, you should always be aware of the rating.

Review your portfolio: Remember bonds are gen-erally not owned for price appreciation or growth but to supply regular income and to provide diversifica-tion when combined with stocks. Accordingly, you should get together with your financial advisor to review the overall quality and diversification of your fixed income portfolio.

Contact Marlene McRob-erts, Edward Jones finan-cial advisor, at 613-623-4030 or 1-888-723-8292.
