AROHI The Ascent 2008 - 09 | Page 35 a magnificent poster in one of our schools induced me to muse on for a while. Big implies large, gigantic, enormous, vast, substantial, significant, massive, immense, lofty, towering, huge, spacious, roomy, tall, high etc. Our students and staff substantiate “Think Big” in a creative way. Besides just thinking they act big. Activity is reality. Writing has picked up in a big way in VKVs. When we set eyes on the house magazines displayed in the schools, we are literally glued. There are stories, poems, jokes, cartoons, pictures, riddles, amazing facts, new proverbs and my Gosh! Wonderful editorials too. Gone are the days when one chart paper was enough for a house magazine. Now there are wall magazines; put on wall to wall. Scores of budding writers and poets are flourishing in VKVs under the able guidance of teachers. It’s an indulgence to read their articles. Moved out are the stories of kings and cabbages, of ghosts, goblins and witches; now the children are writing about 11/26 terrorists’ attack on Taj hotel at Mumbai. They have solutions, they have fears. There is anxiety. There is hope. Some want to take it as a challenge. There are few ready to take the bull by horns and bring the terrorism to an end; lock, stock and barrel. Love, care and concern for the poor are also reflected in the write ups very profoundly and subtly as well. Deforestation in Arunachal Pradesh worries many. Friends, parents, kith and kin also appear in many articles. The lighter side is also quite heavy. It’s a blissful exercise to go through the articles and ascertain what our children are at. Certainly they THINK BIG. They collect and compile big. They write, compose, comment even criticize or carp or appraise in a big way and also look for brighter side. This year the quantum of articles received is quite enormous and apparently the editors are at receiving end. All that is received is good but cannot be printed in AROHI for want of space. Sorry children in fact U R too BIG to be contained in Arohi. Sky is your cutoff point; nay, you can soar beyond the sky my darling children. Gibran Kahlil exhorts : “Your children are not yours They come from you but are not of you They belong to the humanity You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls. For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.” With love, regards, hopes and prayers S. B. Dixit , Editor THINK BIG

while. Big implies large, gigantic, enormous, vast, substantial, significant, massive, immense, lofty,

towering, huge, spacious, roomy, tall, high etc. Our students and staff substantiate “Think Big” in

a creative way. Besides just thinking they act big. Activity is reality. Writing has picked up in a big

way in VKVs. When we set eyes on the house magazines displayed in the schools, we are literally

glued. There are stories, poems, jokes, cartoons, pictures, riddles, amazing facts, new proverbs

and my Gosh! Wonderful editorials too. Gone are the days when one chart paper was enough for

a house magazine. Now there are wall magazines; put on wall to wall. Scores of budding writers

and poets are flourishing in VKVs under the able guidance of teachers. It’s an indulgence to read

their articles. Moved out are the stories of kings and cabbages, of ghosts, goblins and witches;

now the children are writing about 11/26 terrorists’ attack on Taj hotel at Mumbai. They have

solutions, they have fears. There is anxiety. There is hope. Some want to take it as a challenge. There

are few ready to take the bull by horns and bring the terrorism to an end; lock, stock and barrel.

Love, care and concern for the poor are also reflected in the write ups very profoundly and subtly

as well. Deforestation in Arunachal Pradesh worries many. Friends, parents, kith and kin also

appear in many articles. The lighter side is also quite heavy. It’s a blissful exercise to go through

the articles and ascertain what our children are at. Certainly they THINK BIG. They collect and

cutoff point; nay, you can soar beyond the sky my darling children.

Gibran Kahlil exhorts :

“Your children are not yours

They come from you but are not of you

They belong to the humanity

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls.

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

which you cannot visit,

not even in your dreams.”

The Four WivesThere was a rich merchant who had four wives. He loved the fourth wife the most

and took great care of her and gave her the best. He also loved the third wife and

always wanted to show her off to his friends. However, the merchant was always in

fear that she might run away with some other man. He loved his second wife too.

Whenever the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his second wife

and she would always help him out. The merchant’s first wife was a very loyal partner

and maintained his wealth and business and took care of the household. The merchant

did not love the first wife though she loved him deeply.

One day, the merchant fell ill. He knew that he was going to die soon. He told

himself, “I have four wives with me. But when I die, I’ll be alone.”

Thus, He asked the fourth wife, “Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me

company?” “No way!” she replied and walked away without another word.

The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant’s heart. The sad merchant

then asked the third wife, “Will you follow me and keep me company?” “No!” replied

the third wife. “Life is so good over here! I’m going to remarry when you die!” The

merchant’s heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the second wife, “When I die, will you follow me and keep me

company?” “I’m sorry, I can’t help you out this time!” replied the second wife. “At

the most, I can only send you to your grave”. The answer came like a bolt of thunder.

Then a voice called out: “I’ll leave with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go”.

The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like

she suffered from mal nutrition. Greatly grieved, he said, “I should have taken much

better care of you while I could have!”

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives

a) The fourth wife is our body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in

making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die.

b) Our third wife? Our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they go to

others.

c) The second wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been

there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

d) The first wife is our soul, neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and pleasure.

It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it’s a good idea

to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we’re on our deathbed to

lament.(Source : East and West Series)

I wondered what would happen if God

was the judge, the sole judge at the next

Miss India beauty contest!

“Ladies and gentlemen”, says the

compere, pointing to an empty seat,

“today we have the honour and privilege

of having God as our judge”.

“But we can’t see Him”, complain the

scantily dressed damsels as they peep

from behind the curtains at the empty

seat”.

“Have faith, He is there”, says the

compere, as all the contestants move

body, bone and behind to sway onto the

stage.

“Tell them to put all their clothes on”,

says God to the compere.

“Why?” asks a beauty, “Because I can

see their beauty with their clothes on”,

says God.

“What about my glowing skin ?”

“My figure ?”

“My lovely long legs ?”

“Your heart”, says God.

“What? What did God say? ask the

flustered beauty contestants.

“He says He is looking at your heart”.

“But that’s not part of the criteria, God!”

cry the beauties.

“Whose criteria?”

“The judges”.

“I am the judge, my dear girls, and I

can’t think of anything more alluring and

GOOD JUDGE – by Robert Clements

attractive than a beautiful heart. You,

there near the exit!”

“God, that’s the maid !”

“So?”

“Look at her dress!”

“Her skin, God! Just look at her skin!”

“Her hair!”

“Her heart! Look at her heart. Come on

stage, my dear girl. Tell them where you

were last night”.

“With my neighbour’s mother”.

“God, it’s not yet question-answer time!”

“What were you doing with your

neighbour’s mother?”

“Looking after her while my nieghbour

went home from hospital”.

“The old lady was afraid and frightened

through the night at the hospital, I held

her hand and comforted her”.

“And came straight to work?”

“Yes, Lord”.

“Don’t you feel sleepy, my child?”

“I feel happy, my Lord. The dear old lady

was asleep like a baby when I left her!”

“Her heart shines!” said God as he

got up from his chair and left the

hall, unknown to all”.

“And the winner is the maid”, said the

compere, as he presented her the crown.

The crowd stood and applauded, dazzled

by true beauty that shone from her heart.

Potato PowerFew vegetables can claim to have shapednations, sent the economy of a countrytumbling, or played a starring role indiplomatic spats.

But the humble potato can.

In fried form, the potato took center stagein the diplomatic row that broke outbetween Washington and Paris in 2003when France refused to back the US-ledinvasion of Iraq.

To show their ire with the French, USlawmakers had the cafeterias in the Houseof Representatives change the name ofFrench fried potatoes to “freedom fries”.

”This action is a small but symbolic effortto show the strong displeasure of manyon Capitol Hill with the actions of our so-called ally, France,” said Republicanlawmaker Bob Ney of Ohio, at the time.Ney was head of the House committeewhich was in charge of the canteens.

The impact of the humble tuber stretches

back centuries.

The population of Ireland was cut in half

in the mid 1800s after the potato crop

failed and a four-year famine ensued.

The then agriculture-based Irish economy

crumbled and the population plummeted

from eight million to four million, through

deaths from hunger and emigration. It only

surpassed the four million mark in the 1990s,

when Ireland entered an economic boom.

The potato’s unifying reach has spread as

far as Asia, where Dr Fernando Ezeta of

the International Potato Center hailed the

tuber for “bringing together people and

nations” after North Korea hosted officials

from 22 nations — including South Korea

— earlier this year at a conference on the

tuber. The potato has also shaped

European politics.

Polish president Lech Kaczynski cancelled

a summit meeting last year with his

German and French counterparts, just

days after German newspaper Die

Tageszeitung published a satirical article

about Kaczynski and his prime minister

twin brother Jaroslaw, entitled “Poland’s

new potatoes”.

Kaczynski cited illness for the last-minute

cancellation but the media and analysts

speculated that the real reason was his

distaste for being compared with a potato.

British potato farmers have marched on

the houses of parliament in London to

demand that the term “couch potato” be

removed from the dictionary.

They argued the expression — which is

derived from the slang word for a television,

“tube”, which gave rise to “tubers” for those

who spent hours hunkered down on the

sofa gazing at it — gave the impression

that potatoes are bad for the health and,

therefore, bad for their business.

Success starts with a thought or an idea. When nourished with

hope and confidence and encouraged by ambition and aspiration,

that single idea takes shape as a dream, vision and goal in stages.

You must allow your ideas to grow, no matter how far fetched or

nonconformist they may seem in the beginning. You must give

wings to your ideas and let them fly high. You must allow your

thoughts to take root, no matter how other choose to regard them.

Many great people, whom the world today worships with awe and

wonder as gifted visionaries, super geniuses or miracle-makers,

were viewed as utopians or mental defunct by several of their

contemporaries. While some may describe your ideas as imagination

and vision, other may dub them as sheer daydreams and idle

fantasies. But the fact remains that ideas, however strange they

might have seemed at the begining, have ultimately brought

miracles, caused revolution and built civilizations.

Every great and grand accomplishment, whether relating to religion,

science, medicine, industry, technology or sports, which are written

in letters of gold in the history of human advancement, was at the

outset no more than a meager idea in the mind of a human being.

Dear child Pape Cheri,

You were never seen as much worried as you

were seen on that day. Your face did not blossom

like a flower. At first, I thought you must have

forgotten to carry your snacks with you or your

mother couldn’t prepare it for you. That being

the case, I could have managed to provide you

some biscuits, as it was not a midday meal day

for our school. Your little face turned pale when

you hugged me putting your little hands around

me. You wanted me to either sit or bend so you

could whisper something into my ears. I know,

you children often do it, complaining, “Sir you

are so tall”. It was on 28th November 2008, you whispered me that big question,

“Sir, will terrorists kill us?” I still remember you were in a hurry as if you did not

want to put this question to anyone else but only to me. “Sir, they have bombs and

guns. They killed many in Mumbai. Sir, will they…” I know, dear child, I am supposed to

answer you. A teacher must have some answers with him. If not, then he is not eligible

to be a teacher. Your question did not surprise me but your tears filled eyes did. Your

TV screen had telecast it in a very attractive fashion for almost three days and nights.

(26, 27 and 28 November). They could keep the entire nation on its toes. If the gun

battle between the security personnel and the terrorists was bad, the running

commentary telecast by the Visual Medias was worse. You know, dear child, that day is

nicknamed as “26/11”.

They say that Mumbai is still reeling under

the fear-factor. It took three days to evacuate

the terrorists from the premises. You must

have seen on TV, our leaders looking at the

western horizon and bleating loudly, ‘the

perpetrators would be brought to justice’. You

must have again seen people breaking their

heads and pulling their hair in despair and

many camera cl icks. You know child,

terrorists are a special species of “janvar”

(animals) enter the houses where people don’t care to lock their doors before they

sleep. So, don’t forget to lock the doors of your house before you go to bed. However,

you don’t ask me why they kill people. It is a very sensitive question to answer. Nobody

dares to say it. That is the law (Kanoon) of our country. They are never born in jungles.

You know, there are well – established terrorist breeding farms everywhere. The Pakistani

Terrorist Breeding Farm is one of the best. Once a terrorist cub is born it is provided

with a special brand of milk named Anti India Jihadi Milk. When the cub drinks this

milk, it will try to roar an anti India terrorist cub roar. And slowly it grows. These cubs

are taught alphabets and numbers too. You must have already learned it by now in

your class. But there is a slight difference in the way they learn the alphabets from that

of yours. They learn A for “aadmi”, B for “bandook”…. and K for “killing”, etc. You know,

it is very funny! These cubs are given training in how to carry a bomb like a cricket ball

and bowl at any house where the door is carelessly opened and how to pull the trigger

of a bandook and smash every Indian heads etc. Now you are a bit surprised and keen

to learn little more of it, right ? These animals were active in the ancient days also.

They used to travel from country to country, killing and looting indigenous settlers. You

will learn about some of them in future in your history books named Tipusultan, Chenquis

Khan, Babar etc. But they are ornamented with hero’s attire. Those animals became

extinct like dinosaurs. These terrorists are the new adaptation of the old barbarian species.

Now you may ask me, how we can stop

these demons from prowling on us. We

can do it. We can take them by their

horns. But we must have the WILL with

us. We must have the willpower of Guru

Govind Singh, Rana Pratap and Shivaji.

When we start l iv ing wi th that

determination, no animal will dare to

stare and pounce on us. I know that you

are too small to understand all these

things. You will learn it through books that

describe stories of our ancestors who

fought with terrorists destroying their

breeding farms and won the land. So dear

child, love your motherland and its

culture. Days are not far; we will destroy

these terrible species of animals. We have

to do it because mother and motherland

are greater than heaven.

Abo TariThe Ancestor of

Human Race

The ‘Nyishi’ community believes that their ancestor “Nyikum Tani”

took birth as the first man on earth. In course of time, he became

a perfect human being called ‘Niya Tani’ (Abo Tani).

Abotani married ‘Donyi Yai Chumji’, the first daughter of ‘Ayu Donyi’

Donyi Yai Chumji who had a baby. So, she asked Abotani to bring

her younger sister ‘Donyi – Ludi – Lurgo from ‘Donyi Neg Naamfo’,

the kingdom of sun, to look after her baby. There were two paths

for going to Donyi Neg Naamfo. One was Hachi Sekho where ‘Yoma

Tado’ the Supreme Deity of poverty lived. Another was ‘Haaf Sekho’

where all benevolent Gods and Goddesses lived. Doni Yai Chumji

advised Abotani to go through Haaf Sekho route. But Abotani did

not listen to his wife’s advice. He went through Hatchi Sekho and

made friendship with Yama Tada and exchanged all his beautiful

dresses and valuable ornaments with Yoma Tada’s ordinary dress

made of bamboo and cane. After putting on Yoma Tada’s ordinary

dress, Abotani realized his mistake. He felt sad and panicky. Now

he felt ashamed of going to ‘Donyi Neg Namlo wearing such ordinary

dress. So he came back to his home. On seeing him Donyi Yai

Chumji got angry and told Abotani that she would no longer be his

wife as he didn’t listen to her advice. Then she went back to Donyi

Neg Naamlo, her parental home with the baby, leaving Abotani

alone on earth. Abotani became restless and frustrated without his

beloved wife. He threatened to destroy the whole universe. Then

there was restlessness in the universe and all gods and goddesses

got disturbed and started thinking critically for their survival. At

last ‘Hib Gyab-bo, God and Goddess of creation (according Nyishis),

prayed and cooled down Abotani’s anger and advised him to remarry

‘Jlit Ane’, the younger daughter of ‘Ayu Donyi’ (Sun). She was said

to have been the most beautiful lady in the universe of that time.

According to the advice of ‘Hib-Gyab-bo’, Abotani and ‘Jlit Ane’ got

a baby. Thus, the first generation of human beings started.

FriendKm. Gocham Yaka, Class VIII, Roing

A friend is someone

Who understands you best and your feelings.

He doesn’t care about anybody or anything,

But always there at your service.

So, it is said: ‘A friend in need is friend indeed’.

A friend is someone

Who really cares you

And shares all the joys and sorrows with you;

Who gives you support

To overcome all the hurdles of life developing good rapport.

A friend is someone

Who is a very special person

After our revered teachers and dear parents.

FriendshipTessica Rijiju, Class V, Balijan

Friendship is that

Binds the relationship between two persons

That can’t be broken so easily.

Some friendship lasts longer

So, it is lucidly called:

“Friendship is more precious than gold”

Dear friends!

Friendship is like eyes and hands:

When eyes cry, hands wipe away the tears

And when the hands hurt, the eyes cry.

Lurum MyoraVimol Dodum, Class VIII, Seijosa

There was a beautiful girl called Lurum Myora. She was

always in the habit of going to river for fishing. Her parents

repeatedly advised her to avoid such fishing everyday. However,

she continued as before. Once she went to the river for fishing

and did not return. This invited anxiety to the whole family and

all went to search for her everywhere. At last they could trace

out the foot prints of the girl near a big stone lying on a riverbank.

Finally, she was found below a stone crying to be released from

it. She was hungry and requested for rice and water. She told

that she was going to die due to hunger and thirst. In fact, the

trapped girl was talking with her parents from a narrow and long

fissure of the stone. She was trapped in stone and there was no

means to escape and free her. Her parents tried all their best to

free her from the stone trap. They tried to break and destroy the

stone with their swords, but all their attempts went in vain. Being

failed from all corners, the parents brought Apong-water and

rice. They fed the girl with the help of a thick stick . The water or

Apong was poured into the tiny holes with a very small bamboo

tube. Thus, it was an extremely awkward situation where neither

the girl nor the parents could see each other. They could only

talk but could not see her perfectly. The parents and the daughter

remained separated though they were quite near to each other.

Therefore, death was approaching gradually to the girl as she

failed to consume the food with full satisfaction. This activity

continued for a couple of days, and finally, the parents failed to

hear the sound of their daughter anymore despite their repeated

calls. This was the tragic end of a girl who did not obey her parents.

“So my dear brothers and sisters, always obey your elders”.

Mathematics and Science

MATHEMATICS

Mathematics is just like a machine which makes every work easier.

It seems like an abnormal subject.

It is a technically advanced subject.

Mathematics is like a hotel where problems are like meals which

we have to swallow and digest.

Mathematics is like an encounter specialist.

Mathematics is like a magician who can change your life as well

as the whole world within a moment.

Mathematics is an antidote.

Mathematics is a trumpet which can blow on your head.

It is ephemeral as well as rich in imagery.

For world today, mathematicsematics is considered as a

challenging subject.

Lastly, it is the subject which can sharpen your brain.

SCIENCE

Science is just like a sandwich which is very delicious.

It is just like a calendar which goes on changing

It is an impassive subject without any kind of emotions.

Science is the nature boy of this world.

It is the composer of many chemicals.

Lastly, it ekes out our enthusiasms in our daily routine if we help

maintain it properly.

Friends, you may think that mathematics and science, these two

subjects are bisectors of our lives. But it is not so. I have just

elaborated their attitudes to cheer up your minds, not for casting

upon you a trepidation of these two subjects.

So friends, take it easy and learn to play with them rather than

developing fear for them.

Once you internalize them properly, your mind will become as

sharp as new blade and as smooth as carom board.

Clouds are darkening,

Breeze is drilling and

Coming with them is

Thundering and lightening.

The rain is sure to come,

And coming with it is snow.

All over in the hills and fallows.

Frog croaks

And land cracks.

Finally raindrops give way to reality,

And each time in high intensity.

Giving prosperities to the farmers,

And relief to workers.

After a long gap of three years, I was on my way to my village.

Because of poor transportation and long distance, my visits to my

native place were sparse and far in between. But I enjoyed going

there. Actually, I had to walk a lot after getting down from bus.

This time too, after walking a long distance, I could view my village.

Climbing up the high mountains, I was lost in the beautiful

communion of Mother Nature. Still I had to cover a long distance,

but the wind, blowing in opposite direction strained me to move

forward. I could hear the chirpings of birds that was my sole

companions. The desire to see my village arose the curiosity within,

leaving behind all the fatigue and difficulties. No sooner did I touch

the wet and familiar lands than I got delighted of the eternal bliss

coming on my way. Unlike city, before sunrise, elders and

youngsters started the day. Morning rays rejuvenated the forest

creatures giving new lives and spirits to the young ones and broke

the tranquility of entire village. The lands were cleared and made

ready for sowing seeds. Everyone in the field was toiling with a lot

of hope and interest on the face. I too was excited. Under the

bright sun-light we tilled the land. There was a spontaneous joy

from within. Later on, the sky was overcast with dense clouds and

it rained. It was a heavy cloud burst. After some time the rain

stopped and I could the sun from the hill.It was so pleasing. The

stay at the village gave me the happiness of not less than a dwelling

There is a scratch on the nose of the idol.”  Said the sculptor, still

The sculptor replied that it would be installed on a pillar twenty

“Beauty Contest”Mummo Lego, Class IX, Sunpura

A reputed beauty product company once

asked the people of a large city to send

pictures along with brief accounts about

the most beautiful women they knew.

Within a few weeks, thousands of letters

were delivered to the company.

One letter in particular caught the

attention of the person-in-charge of the

company and he handed over it to the

Company President without delay. The

letter was written by a young boy who

obviously was from a broken house,

living in a rundown neighborhood. With

spelling correction, the excerpt of this

letter reads:

“A beautiful woman lives down the

street. I visit her everyday. She makes

me feel like the most important kid in

the world. We play checkers and she

listens to my problems. She understands

me, and when I leave, she always yells

out at the door that she’s proud of me”.

The boy ended his letter saying, “This

picture shows you that she’s the most

beautiful woman. I wish I could have a

wife as pretty as she is”.

Intrigued by the letter, the president

asked to see this woman’s picture. His

secretary gave him a photograph of a

smiling, toothless woman, well advanced

in years sitting in a wheel chair, sparse

grey hair pulled back in a bun, and

wrinkles that formed deep furrows on

her face were some how diminished by

the twinkle in her eyes.

“We can’t use this ”, explained the

president, smiling.

“She would show the world that our

products aren’t necessary to be truly

beautiful woman”.

One night I felt so boring that I closed my books and kept them

aside. Everybody at home was busy watching TV. I silently switched

off the light of my room and opened the windows gently. The cool

wind entered my room and passed by my side gently and made

me feel as pure as winter. I sent my eyes to the distant sky and

felt as if the moon gazed at me. The moonlight spread over the

sky. I felt as if God was showering His blessings to this world.

Then suddenly I heard my mom shouting, “Come soon Ani, see

what’s happening?”. I ran towards my mom and was spellbound

to see that was going on in TV. Suddenly my mind was filled with

sorrow and somewhere there was anger hidden within the sorrow.

and other forces were busy to free Mumbai from terrorists. They

have captured The Taj hotel and Nariuman house. Done lot but

the same condition continued for 59 hours. After that, Indian Armed

THE CLEVER SONKoj Koniya, Class- IX, Ziro

Once in a small village there lived a poor old couple. Their son was

in jail. One day the old father decided to write a letter to his son.

He wrote:

“Dear son, we are starving here. So I am planning to dig and

cultivate our barren land”

The very next day the father received a letter from the son

“No father! Please do not dig the field because I have hidden my

guns and bullets which are needed for me later”.

Just then someone knocked at his door. The police have arrived.

On seeing the police, the heartbeat of the old man fastened with

fear. The police snatched the letter from him and

read it. After reading it,

they dug and searched each

and every inch of the field

but found no guns or

bullets.

The very next day the old

man received another letter

from his son:

“Father I have led a unworthy

TAIYU SIMIHKm. Tage Yalung, Class VIII, Roing

Our village is on the edge of GANGA LAKE, which is in

Itanagar, known by a name Taiyu Simih. This Taiyu Simih

has an old story of it.

Long long ago, once there was a young, brave and hard

working man. He used to go to jungle for work. One morning, on his way to jungle, he saw

a frog being caught by a snake. Looking at the helpless frog, he felt pity. He killed the snake

and saved the frog’s life. Many days passed by. One early morning he got up and went to

the jungle to trap rats. As he went hurriedly; he forgot to cook the food for himself. When

he came back in the evening, to his surprise, he found the food, well cooked. This continued

for many days. So, one day he thought to look who used to cook food for him. So, he went

outside of his home and watched hiding near by. Then he saw a girl entered home and was

cooking for him. After seeing her, he went inside and asked the girl, “Why are you cooking

food for me?” The girl replied, “Once you saved my life by killing the snake. I was a frog

then. As you have saved my life, I want to serve you. I wish to marry with you.” The man

said, “Before marrying, we must go and talk to your parents.” The girl agreed and said, “If

you want, we must go and talk to my parents, she requested him to follow her to

TAIYUSIMIH.” “I will throw a stick into the river;

you have to jump along with me in the river.”

Instructed the girl. Thus they reached to a house

there the man saw his would-be father-in-law

and mother-in-law. They too agreed and gave both

of them a mithun after marriage. Many years

passed by and they had now many Mithuns. One

day the man thought to himself, “I have so many

Mithuns now. Let me cut and eat the eldest one

as it is growing older.” When he cut the eldest

mithun, all other Mithuns went inside the Taiyu

Simih and vanished away. The man asked his wife

the reason for mishap. My parents gave the

mithun for raring and not for slaughter and eat.

The boy now realized that his father-in-low is none

other than the God Himself. This incident made

him feel very sorry and he promised his wife not

to become cruel anymore to any of the creatures.

After this incident, the man became an ideal man

and role model for others.

Lastly, the lady was cured. And the doctor asks for the fees, but

the lady refuses to pay saying that the cure is not complete. So

the doctor brings a judge. The judge asked the lady why she is not

WAY TO SUCCESS Jayanta Gogoi, Teacher VKV Roing

We are all after the dream shown by a seven-lettered word “success”. Can anyone achieve

success in his life ? Or we can just try for it ? Is success absolute or relative ? Just like a student

who got 70 and 85 marks respectively in 1st and 2nd terminal examinations in a particular

subject. That means he achieved more success in the 2nd terminal as compared to the 1st one.

He can still try for better success. Thus, it is a relative word. When can we tell that someone has

achieved success? I am leaving this question for the readers of this article.

In one of the last meetings, we teachers had discussed the word “success” interpreting a

formula sent by our VKV AP T. It is given below:

Success = 3Q + 3D or in short : S = 3Q + 3D.

Where 3Q represents intelligence quotient, emotional quotient and spiritual quotient. And 3D

represents devotion, dedication and dignity. So, to achieve the success one must have all these

six qualities irrespective of whether he is a teacher or a student. Which one should come first is

also not so important. But if anyone is less than the success will be less. In the mathematical

point of view too, in the process of addition, if any term has less value, obviously the sum will

be less. We can compare the same thing with the cooking of a vegetable, where in between salt

and turmeric powder, which one we have to put first that is not so important. Important is the

quantity of each one. How much we have to put? If either of one is less, the vegetable will

become either tasteless or colourless. Similarly, if one has intelligence but he has no dignity,

devotion and dedication for his work, then he can not achieve success in his work. In fact, his

intelligence will be of no use. So, all the values or qualities will be required collectively for

maximum success.

Now I want to go towards the word ‘intelligence’ quotient. It represents the degree of brightness

possessed by an individual. It is obtained by dividing the mental age (M.A.) by the chronological,

and multiplying the result by 100. The formula for I.Q. is IQ = (M.A. /C.A.) x 100.

The mental age is the expression of the extent of development achieved by the individual

stated in terms of the performance can be expected at any given age. If I.Q. would have been

100, his mental growth would be just normal. If it would have been 75, his growth would be

below normal.

The next quality is emotional stability which can be measured with emotional quotient. As a

student or as a teacher, he or she might have an intensely emotional life. He or she might have

intensity of feeling, instability, anxiety, mood swings, fluctuation of feeling, egotism etc. But to

win over a situation, the individual must have emotional stability. He or she must know how to

react to a disastrous situation and how to control it.

Today’s students are tomorrow’s citizens of our country. So the teacher as well as the student

must be the role-models in front of our society. We teachers and the student must have good

moral values. For that, we must be spiritually enriched.

We teachers must feel the importance of our profession. A person who wants to join this

profession must feel the call for it. In the words of Secondary Education Commission: “ They

will not look upon their work as an unpalatable means of earning a living but as an avenue

through which they are rendering significant social services as finding some measure of self-

fulfillment and self expression.”

So, to be a successful teacher, we must have devotion, dedication and dignity for our profession

or service. For students also all these values are most essential.

We are celebrating our independence”

I ask you: You and everyone,

“Are we free???”

I see our motherland

Still in barriers and chains

The barriers of caste lay the chain:

GeotroublesAfter explaining about latitude, longitude,

degrees and minutes the Geography teacher

asked, “Suppose I invited you to meet me for

lunch at 23 degrees, 4 minutes north latitude

and 45 degrees, 15 minutes east longitude,

showed the globe where we would be taking

lunch ”

After a confused silence, a voice volunteered,

“I guess you’d be eating alone.”

Teacher asked Taba : how can you prove the

earth is round ?

Taba replied : I can’t. Besides, I never said it

was.

– Compiled by a vulnerable Geography teacher

Chain of poverty,

Chain of unlawful acts,

Chain of corruption.

“Where ?”

How do you see free India ?

Is she free from terrorists ?

Is she free from violence ?

No, the problems are still alive.

How ? How to set India truly free ?

Free from the darkness of ignorance

Taking India towards the path

Of development.

To achieve the goal of democracy,

To get the faith of love,

To turn the barrier around

Into the flower ground.

Let’s all come together

To set India free,

Free from negative forces

And achieve the dreams

Of Nehru and Gandhiji,

Shastriji, Netaji and Swamiji.

Water and life‘Water flows from high in the mountains,

Water runs deep in the Earth. Miraculously,

water comes to us, and sustains all life. Even

if we know the source of our water, we still

take its appearance for granted. But it is

thanks to water that life is possible, our bodies

are more than 70 percent water. Our food can

be grown and raised because of water. Water

is a god friend, bodhisattva, that nourishes

the many thousands of species on Earth.

It Happened to Me Mobia Rambo, Class VIII, Roing

It is true that we can learn a lot from experience. I used to play

harmonium in the prayer hall, so I had to bring harmonium from

our teacher’s quarters. We did not keep harmonium in prayer hall.

One fine evening I went to take the same. After lifting the

harmonium, I thought of reaching prayer hall quickly. So I kept

on running and I could not control my balance and harmonium

was out of my hands. Though I did not get much hurt, but

it gave me a lesson that one who makes haste, it is always

a waste for him.

Once I was angry with one of my friends during

the class hour. I found his home work

incomplete, so I complained to our teacher. The

teacher then asked for my home work and I

suddenly realized that I too had not done my

home work. And I received more than what I

deserved.

MAGIC ORANGESKm. Heni Kamum, Class V, Jirdin

Once upon a time there was a prince

who was very naughty. He never spoke

to anybody. One day the prince was

sitting, feeling really bored. Suddenly

he saw an old woman. The old woman

was carrying water in a pot. The prince

began to throw stones at the woman.

The women requested him not to do

so, but he did not listen. At last the

woman was fed up. She cursed, “You

will never be happy until you find the

three magical oranges”. Actually the

old woman was a witch. From that day

onwards the prince became miserable

and quite a gloomy.

One day one of the ministers came and

asked, “Your majesty, why don’t you

go for a ride?” Then the prince took

one of his horses from the stable and

rode away. After a few miles the prince

stopped at the bank of a river. As he

was resting, he heard a small dwarf

saying, “I know where these three

oranges are? I am ready to tell you

provided you should give me all your

jewels.” OK replied the prince.“After

a few miles you will reach a garden.

You must f ind the three magical

oranges from there by yourself.”

Saying this, he went away. But the

prince could not know that the dwarf

was actually the son of the witch!

Soon, the prince found the garden.

There he saw the orange tree. But

alas! The witch was very happy. The

witch plucked three oranges and gave

them to the prince and said, “I think

you have learned your lesson. Take

these three oranges and live cheerfully

till the end of your life. But promise

me first that you will never harass

anybody. You should talk to others

politely and never tease anybody.” The

prince promised to do so. Then he took

the oranges and rode back. After some

time, the prince felt thirsty. So he took

out the oranges. As he was about to

put it in his mouth, a beautiful princess

came out of it. The princess said, “Oh!

Please help me. Give me some water,

I am going to die.” The prince looked

for water every where but found no

water. She again pleaded, “Please give

me some water, I am very thirsty.” The

prince had an idea this t ime. He

squeezed the oranges into her mouth.

The princess was satisfied. She then

asked the prince, “O prince, now all

your oranges are finished. How can

you be happy ?” The prince suddenly

felt that he was not unhappy anymore.

He had a strange contentment and

happiness in his heart.

“MORAL IS LIKE A CORAL, GOT AFTER MANY HARDSHIP.THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS;

CORAL BEAUTIFIES ONE’S BODY AND MORAL BEAUTIFIES ONE’S LIFE.”

Based on a recent sample survey, conducted by me with some of my known persons regarding

their views on moral of their children. As expected, about 95% of parents were making sure

their child/children grow up to be a moral person. But in real sense, it becomes hard for parents

to achieve what we consider good moral. In olden days parents and their children were embedded

in a network of family and community works that contributed to the moral upbringing of the

children. Now due to the changing lifestyle, that is becoming more and more isolated. As a

result of this, the task of moral training has increasingly becoming the responsibly of parents as

well as institutions where the children are attending school. Due to increasing the gap between

haves and have nots in our state and emerging of a neo-rich class in the society- the most

important work of raising moral of the children has become more difficult. In addition to this,

the cultural transition, media and carefree life style of neo-rich/privileged people’s children

have compounded the stepping stone of character building of a child at formative age. These

factors promote immoral, unethical and self focused behaviours in the society/school. Some

very fortunate children receive good atmosphere at home which help them in shaping their

character/moral duties.

A couple of years ago an unfortunate accident that involved a young VKV Itanagar student has

drifted me to came more closer to VKV Itanagar and office of the Joint Secretary VKV Arunachal

Pradesh Trust, Itanagar and gave ample opportunity to observes closely the activities of VKV.

The VKVs makes their sincere endeavour in moral and character building of a student in its

formative age. The dress code and conduct of students of VKVs are quite distinct from that of

many other schools in Arunachal Pradesh. The VKV authorities’ sincere endeavour to inculcate

and infuse six pillars of character – trust worthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring

and over all to become a good citizen of a country is praise worthy. Time to time involving

parents for solving issues encountered by the VKV authorities is also an encouraging step. I call

upon the teachers and parents & well-wishers in the society to help imparting sound moral

lessons to the children in their formative age, and guide the young learners towards building a

sound foundation of ethical and moral values in the life.

GOD EXISTS

T he professor of a univers i ty

challenged his students with this

question. “Did God create everything

that exists?” A student answered

bravely, “Yes, he did”. The professor

then asked, “ I f God created

everything, then he created evil. Since

evil exists (as noticed by our own

actions), so God is evil. The student

couldn’t respond to that statement

causing the professor to conclude that

he had “proved” that “belief in God”

was a fa i ry ta le , and there fore

worthless.

Another student raised his hand and

asked the professor, “May I pose a

question?”

“Of course” answered the professor.

The young student stood up and asked

: “Professor does Cold exists?”

The professor answered, “What kind

of question is that ?...Of course the

cold exists... haven’t you ever been

cold ?”

The young student answered, “In fact

sir, Cold does not exist. According to

the laws of Physics, what we consider

cold, in fact is the absence of heat.

Anything is able to be studied as long

as it transmits energy (heat).But

darkness is not the subject. Absolute

Zero is the total absence of heat, but

cold does not exist. What we have

done is create a term to describe how

we feel if we don’t have body heat or

we are not hot.”

“And, does Dark exist?”, he continued.

The professor answered “Of course”.

This time the student responded, “Again

you’re wrong, Sir. Darkness does not

exist either. Darkness is in fact simply

the absence of light. Light can be

studied, darkness can not. And there are

various on lights (optics etc.) Darkness

cannot be broken down. A simple ray of

light tears the darkness and illuminates

the surface where the! light beam

finishes. Dark is a term that we humans

have created to describe what happens

when there’s lack of light.”

F ina l ly, the s tudent asked the

professor, “Sir, does evil exist?”

The professor replied, “Of course it

ex is ts , as I ment ioned at the

beginning, we see violations, crimes

and violence anywhere in the world,

and those things are evil.”

The student responded, “Sir, Evil does

not exist. Just as in the previous cases,

Evil is a term which man has created

to describe the result of the absence

of God’s presence in the hearts of man.

After this, the professor bowed down

his head, and didn’t answer back.

The young man’s name was

Sir ALBERT EINSTEIN.

THE CLEVER QUEENPriyanka Bhowal, Class- IX, Roing

Once a king married an ordinary girl. For many

years, he lived happily with her. But soon, he

got tired of her and told her to go back to her

father’s house. The queen was shocked to hear it.

She tried to reason out with the king, but he did

not listen to anything. At last, the queen decided

to do as the king wished. When she was ready to

leave, the king told her, “I will let you take any

one thing that is dearest to you”. The queen

requested him to let her live in the palace for one

night. The king agreed. The next morning, when

the king woke up, he found himself in an entirely

new room. Soon he realized that he was not in his

palace but in an humdrum room of an ordinary

house. He was taken aback and sought to raise an

alarm. The queen came running to the room. The king asked where he was. “At my father’s

house”, replied the queen politely. “And what for”, shouted the king. The queen said, ‘You

had told me to take the thing that was dearest to me. Therefore, I brought you here. You

are my sweetheart and I can’t live without you.’ Last night when you were asleep, I requested

the servants to bring you here. This is the best room available at my father’s.

The king realized his folly. He realized that how loving and caring his wife was. Together

they went back to the palace and lived happily ever after.

Flowers raise out their heads

From the fresh new wet mead.

Bees dance from flower to flower

For joy and for pleasure.

The whole world looks so bright

With dazzling flowers and sun at height;

Birds sing on every tree

With joy and their minds free.

And the river flows down the hills

What a lovely sight to see !

LAGE RAHO – The present is alone the time when we can work and achieve, gain and gather,

give and serve. In the past we can “now” do nothing; in the future we can “now” accomplish nothing.

In the dead moments of past and in the unborn moments of future we can never act. These living,

dynamic present moments are the only fields to be hammered at, wherein are all the glories of life,

all the gains of existence. More often than not we either go on exalting the past or brood over the

future and the wonderful gift of “present” remains unwrapped.

THE CHOICE IS YOURSPiu Das, Class X, Roing

Are you glad to subsist ?

You are one of the ones

Who intend to live for others

Rather than oneself !

Or, are you one of the ones

Who give a try at least

To make his life worthy.

But a thing to keep in mind;

Many more are there,

And be named as martyrs

Who sacrificed their lives.

Moreover, those who love to sit down on their beds

And have cupful accompanied by biscuits;

Let’s condense their figures,

And attempt to turn out to be one of the

First two choices.

Truly TroubleOnce, a contractor wanted to donate a sports

car to an official. The official refused, saying, “I

am an honest person and I cannot think of

accepting this gift.” The contractor asked him,

“In that case how would it be if I sell you this car

for Rs 1000/-?” The official replied immediately,

“In that case, I will have two cars!”

When an untruth is wrapped in gift packing, you

forget you have a problem. You accept it without

a murmur. However, when truth is presented

bare, you do protest. Presented bare, truth hurts;

ego cannot tolerate truth easily.

Bond of Trust

Little girl and her father were crossing a bridge. The father was

kind of scared so he asked his little daughter, “Sweetheart,

please hold my hand so that you don’t fall into the river.” The

little girl said, “No, Dad. You hold my hand.” “What’s the

difference?” Asked the puzzled father. “There’s a big

difference,” replied the little girl. “If I hold your hand and

something happens to me, chances are that

I may let your hand go. But if you hold my

hand, I know for sure that no matter what

happens, you will never let my hand go.”

In any relationship, the essence of trust is

not in its bind, but in its bond.
