Around the Pitches
Stingrays win U15C South Championship
U15 Stingrays defeated Brighton (7 – 1) to seal the U15C championship and booked their finals appearance with a
convincing win in perfect weather. The Stingrays had to battle hard in the warm conditions against Brighton. Brighton were able to create a number of opportunities that reminded the Stingrays that nothing can be taken for granted. The Stingrays continued to push forward creating numerous chances for each other, but found it difficult to finish the hard work with lots of shots off target or without enough force to penetrate the defence. It was a terrific result for the boys after all the hard work they put in over the season. Goal Scorers: Corey Kovacs 3, Mithiran Anandeswaran, Joshua Mravljak, Yastheel Naidoo and Tom Wilson. Best Players: Declan Brightman, Aidan Carroll, Tom Wilson, Joshua Mravljak and Corey Kovacs.
It is with great pleasure I am giving out this acknowledgement of 100 games to James Wilson. After all he is a true product of the Stingrays ethos, which is sticking with our players year in year out as they strive to improve their game. The improvement though, is ultimately down to their own commitment and l’m happy to say on that front: James has delivered. Not the most naturally gifted player, James has worked hard on all aspects of his game, the improvement is there for all to see, which makes him the important player he is today. In the past he has played both at right back and defensive midfield. This year for the under 17s, he is our centre defence and is important in keeping the back line organised. James uses his speed to cut off opposition through balls, is hard to the tackle, never gives up on a second effort and is always totally committed to his team. James, don't throw your boots away just yet, we want you back again next year!!

James Wilson – 100 Games
Congratulations to Miranda Fielder who has now played 50 games for Aspendale Stingrays. Easy really!! Miranda is a determined player and totally committed to her team, both at training and on game days. Let’s just say it won't be a surprise when she reaches 100 games! Miranda has traditionally played in central defence and she does well there because she can naturally read the game and is able to cut off opposition attacking play successfully, which is a real asset for the team. Miranda also does well when it comes to distribution of the ball in offensive play, which again is a great plus for any team. This year, Miranda has shown the skill and instinct to play in numerous other positions, whether as goalie, in midfield, or in the forward line, she plays to the best of her ability and always with great results. Ryan Comerford, the “Hair with Flair”, plays his 50th Game this week. Ryan is a popular member of the team who never complains and always plays with a smile on his face. Ryan started in the skills program and has progressed through to the U11 team having improved his touch, passing and shooting this season, his fair play and a ripping attitude. Ryan has become a versatile player and can play in any of the out field positions. Watching him bury the ball in the back of the net to score his first goals for the U11’s has been magical. Well done Ryan Robert Graves U11 Maroon Coach

U11 Maroons defeated Sandringham SC (11 – 1) with brilliant team play. A big congratulations goes out to Noah Alwyn, for his first goal then converted another for a double. Our 50 games milestone players, Joel Schoorman, Harry Swinton-‐Lee and Luke Dickerson all celebrated with a goal each. Others to score were Tommy Graves, Ryan Comerfield, Massimo Camillo and Liam Pavlov. U11 Wallabies were away to Brighton SC Thunderbolts on a gloriously sunny Saturday morning.
The game started in fairly pedestrian fashion with both sides tussling in midfield and both defences on top early on. However, it didn’t take long for us to find our stride with good accurate passing and running off the ball created many chances for our swooping forward line. Half way through the first half, Adam Bartosy’s explosive pace down the left wing saw him release an inch perfect pass into the box for the ever-‐present Jack Mogensen to pounce and clinically slot home our first of the game.
Our second came goal about through good midfield pressure by the fleet footed Guy Toomer and ‘cool as you like’ Finn McCall forced Brighton into making quite a few errors in front of goal. Samuel Curtis’ tireless running paid finally off by pouncing on a Brighton defensive error to thread through an inch perfect pass to that man again, Jack Mogensen, who slammed home Stingray’s 2nd goal from 15 yards out.
Not to be out done and within minutes of the first half whistle, up stood Tom Wilcox whose just rewards for tireless running and continual pressure came through another thunderbolt of a shot hitting the underside of the crossbar and bouncing out but not before the ‘goal-‐line’ technology adjudicated the correct decision of a goal.
The Stingrays cruised into the half time break 3 nil up.
The second half started in the same manner as the first half finished with the Stingrays smelling victory early and decided to go in search of more goals. This time Kailan Smith and Declan Ford were put into more attacking roles to showcase their running and passing skills. Within seconds both Kailan and Declan had shots on goal go wide with the Brighton keeper playing valiantly as the stand-‐out player for their side.
So, it was no surprise that our fourth goal was a wonderful exhibition in passing and selfless play. Jeremy Ockerby’s running pressure and composure sent through a great ball to Declan Ford who quite unselfishly squared the ball into the path of the rampaging Kailan Smith who managed to chest the ball into the back of the net from 2 yards out; Stingrays up 4 nil and we were not done yet!
Some great work in midfield by Max Reindel created the next chance sending Adam Bartosy through onto goal for him to slot home (he does have a right foot!) providing Stingrays’ fifth and final goal of the game.
At the final whistle it was Brighton SC Thunderbolts 0: The Mighty Aspendale Stingrays 5
Goal Scorers: Jack Mogensen 2; Tom Wilcox 1; Kailan Smith 1; Adam Bartosy 1
Stingray’s players have notched up 500 goals this season so far
The U14 Boys lost to Caulfield (2 – 3). Last time we met we had an easy win but this game they kept the pressure on us. We let Caulfield score in the first half to be trailing 1-‐0 at half time. With some strong defence by Jordan Daicos and Jordy Athanassiou we had chances to score but didn’t score our first goal till late in the match. Cole Ryan kept trying to push through their defence and eventually Lachlan Mutimer scored followed up by a goal to Cole. Caulfield scored another and we ran out of time losing 2-‐3. A game of missed chances and a slow start to game has cost us second place on the ladder. We take on ladder leaders Hampton Park away next week so will have to start strongly. Goal scores : Lachlan Mutimer and Cole Ryan Best players: Cole Ryan, Ben Garside Weinert, Lachlan Mutimer, Jordy Athanassiou and Josh Bourke U8 Boys lost to Sandringham at the dreaded Sandringham pitch and it was much of the same, although this time we lost having fun. There was some great play from all the boys. They really gel as a team except when it’s an own goal and the blame game starts bit luckily we had coach Jason to cool the situation. Sadly the wise words from coach Tony fell on deaf ears as the cantaloupes (pretty posh Tony) were consumed. Its the last game next week and even your humble manager is glad its coming to an end. See you all at Brown's for the last game. Scorers: Josh Welsh and Charlie Stevering. U9 Boys drew with Skye (1 all). Some bumping before the game seemed to do the trick and the team started in full flight. There was plenty of run up forward with Xavier Supple and Damiano Muscariello. In the back Charlie Stevering and Marley Haenga made sure that Skye did not get out. Lucas Cash played with flair and Oliver Hower took on some of their bigger boys. A great pass to the middle from Joel McCall and Oliver Del Rio was there to pounce on the ball and scored a great goal. Will Wade kept to nil again in goals. The team started the second half not as well and Skye put the pressure on early and came close a couple of time. Campbell McFarlane took one for the team with a shot against his head, saving a certain goal. However Skye did manage to score a bit later. This triggered the team back in action and it was great to see the passing out wide from defence and back in the middle in attack. Although we came agonisingly close a couple of times, it ended up in a draw. Scorer: Oliver Del Rio
The U10 Boys lost to Kingston City SC with Mark Deacon, Peter Sexton and Nic Andronis all trying hard. Apparently the parents who forgot the “magic oranges” for half time will not be forgiven!
The U11 Green Boys were on fire defeating Chelsea FC (8 – 1). We showed our ability to tackle well and win the ball along with passing the ball to team mates produced lots of team goals.
Goal scorers: Jake Kovacs 4, Jobe Berends, Jackson Walley, Aaron Haverfield and Luke Nevill. The U13D boys have their MOJO back! They beat Sandringham Reds (5 – 1). Our goals scorers today were Aidan Morris, Nathan Drozdek (good strong penalty), Brennan Allardyce and 2 from Jake Kovacs. Special mentions to Ned Pyne for his non-‐stop running up and down the park, Nathan Hall for always being perfectly positioned and for the great crosses he was putting in, Jake Kovacs for always giving his all and Jack Mastromonaco who didn't miss a beat today! Aspendale Stingrays U17 drew with Beaumaris (1 all). Once again as per last weeks game the opposition proved to be hard running, quick to the ball and resilient. All games are now very even and to win games at this age takes lots of commitment and hard work. The boys showed lots of grit today and although Beaumaris were applying lots of pressure. The boys coped well and denied Beaumaris any real chances on our goals. We were able create some great chances and only quality goalkeeping stopped a deserved half time lead. The second half was much the same in fact the Stingrays had upped the ante, and we were starting to control the game and looked sure to score, but we all know soccer can be a cruel game and Beaumaris scored a real fluke with their only meaningful chance on goals. But sometimes soccer can also be very kind to you and a great shot by Nik Anastassiades was fumbled by the Beaumaris goalie as he let the ball slip through his legs to even the scores. The Beaumaris goalie made up for his unfortunate error late in the game by denying the Stingrays victory by making a tremendous save after a fantastic Stingrays attacking move. Goal Scorer -‐ Nik Anastassiades Aspendale Stingrays U11 Girls defeated Skye United Blue (13 – 0). A perfect day for Football and the girls once again continued the huge improvement from season start. Firstly let’s put today and the continued improvement into perspective as we note the previous encounter with Sky Utd was a 1 -‐ 0 win to Stingrays. Our girls are a very naturally committed team who you can clearly see just love playing the game. That makes it easy for the coach in terms of motivation on game day. but there is more to it than that, the secret ingredient is learning and practicing skills on cold and wintery nights at training sessions down at good old Browns reserve, so to see some really well taken goals. Great distribution of the ball, great team shape and lots of close ball dribbling skills, well that is what it all about!! Well done, girls and Team Captain Josie Guarino
Goal Scorers: Lauren Ditchfield 2, Esther Kipnis 2, Lina Nakovska 2, Bonnie Carmichael 2, Miranda Fielder 2, Erica Hall, Josie Guarino and Maeve Conry.
