Greetings from

Your golf course maintenance crew

Dan HolmesGreenway Golf Superintendent

Arrowhead Country Club

The greens core aer-ification on March

23rd was completed and the putting greens have healed and recovered very nicely in just about 3 weeks. Thank you for your patience during this important time for the aerification to remove thatch, reduce compac-tion, and increase water penetration. The aerifica-tion will certainly make my job a lot easier in the months ahead and for the overall health of the greens.

We have really been

pushing the fairways with weekly fertilizer ap-plications to get them to fill in and give you the best playability possible. Although the Bermuda fairways are not where we want them, we are making good progress and should be completely filled in by mid-May. The Fairways have been all sprayed with Herbicides to take out all the unwanted weeds and cool season turf grass, which will help the Ber-muda grass to fill in and smooth out the playing surface.

The time spent in gen-eral maintenance on the golf course has increased significantly due to higher temperatures and longer days. This means higher irrigation and hand wa-tering, mowing more fre-quently and more time spent trimming, pruning, cutting and edging. Our major focus during early April has been getting the greens back on track from aerification and weed control and prevention, detail work, small proj-ects. You can see that we are really busy this time of

year but I think the Main-tenance staff is up to the challenge.

May will surely bring us another really busy month. With all the extra demand we have brought on some extra staff to help with the work and make sure the standard of play-ability and excellence con-tinues to be of the upmost of importance. Thank you again for your patience on the aerification process.

Page 6: Arrows May 2015 - Arrowhead Country Club

Well we’ve now traversed the entire golf course,

literally! So this should be the end of things... right. I say that with a somewhat foreboding tone that bespeaks the somewhat eerie coincidental winding down of our hole-by-hole literary history of Arrowhead, with the very real possibility of the end of Arrowhead as an equity club. But as yet we don’t know the consequences as the ending is still somewhat up in the air.

When the ending is up in the air in a round of golf there’s always a way of resolving matters. That resolution is by way of sudden death play-offs, or, as in the 1929 U.S. Open, a “slower” sudden death considering it took Bobby Jones 36 extra holes to defeat Al Espinosa. Even slower was the death that it took Lloyd Mangrum in 1946 to defeat Byron Nelson and Vick Ghezzi in 54 holes. But the slowest, most agonizing death was in 1931 which went 72 extra holes before Billie Burke was able to defeat Ted Lyford’s old teacher, George Von Elm.

The analogy seems to be quite apt considering we’ve been in this extra-hole mode for quite a few months now. To our hard working board members it must seem like years as they are faced with problems that no previous boards have ever had to confront. Being a board member has always been a thankless task, but lately it’s been thankless with an attitude! It’s a contentious and emotional atmosphere not conducive for reflection and rational thought as we are looking square in the face at the death of our 71-year-old equity country club. One could not pay these members enough to go through the sleepless nights and days punctuated with heated exchanges and shouting matches, and they did it for nothing, and are still doing it for that matter.

As they plod through the process they have the task of trying to make everybody happy, which they know will never happen, but

they are doing the best they can and that’s all we can ask of any human being.

And now at the risk of committing an impropriety and sounding somewhat soppy, but coming from the perspective of someone who grew up at this great club and was raised by the members and employees of Arrowhead CC, I’m willing to take that risk by stating, that nobody could love this club more than I do, at least that is what I thought until this whole process started, but by the actions and strivings of this board they have shown that they care as much if not more than anybody possibly can.

They have unflinchingly stated their opinions and made these extremely tough decisions which opened themselves up to ridicule from “the seldom right but never in doubt crowd” of which I’m a card carrying member. It is easy to sit at the bar and voice your opinion, and give little owlish nods as though you’re some great store house of wisdom (of course that’s what bars are for which was part of my education at Arrowhead) and it’s something else again to have your opinion have more ramifications and consequences than any previous board in the history of Arrowhead.

All I can say is THANK YOU!

Well we’re now on the green at the eighteenth hole and so let’s finish off by showing golfers finishing up a competition on the eighteenth at St. Andrews, the “Old Course,” in 1858 on what is arguably the most famous of all finishing holes. This photo we’re showing here is reputed to be the oldest known image showing golfers actually playing.

The other graphic shows most of our original equity members as they’re celebrating a gala event in one of the first festivities of our newly formed club.
