The Pinakothek der Moderne
The Munich neighborhood of“Maxvorstadt” has been a favoriteamong art enthusiasts since1836. That is when the AltePinakothek was built. Today itis home to the Bavarian StatePainting Collections, which includepieces from the Middle Agesto the mid-18th Century. Thecollections at the Neue Pinakothekand the Pinakothek der Modernecover the historical epochs thatfollowed: The Neue Pinakothekpresents works of art from the19th and early 20th century. ThePinakothek der Moderne containsworks from classic modernism andcontemporary art.
The Lenbachhaus is famous for theworld's largest collection of works bythe artists of the “Blaue Reiter” suchas Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky,August Macke, Paul Klee andGabriele Münter. The City Gallery,which includes the Kunstbau in theKönigsplatz subway station, is hometo works by Munich painters of the19th century and current temporaryexhibitions. Since re-opening in May2013, the former residence andstudio of painter and prince Franzvon Lenbach shines in a new luster.
