ART DESIGN AND STYLE
TERMS
COMPOSITIONThe plan, placement, or arrangement of the
elements in an art work.
BALANCEThe way the elements of art are arranged to create a
feeling of stability in a work. The equalization of elements in a work of art. Balance in design is similar to balance in physics. A large shape close to the center can be balanced by a small shape close to the edge. A large light toned shape will be balanced by a small dark toned shape (the darker the shape the heavier it appears to be)
CONTRASTA large difference between two things: hot and
cold, green and red, light and shadow. A way of putting elements of art next to each other to stress the differences between them. It can direct attention to points of interest.
COMPLEMENTARY COLORS• Colors that are opposite each
other on the color wheel (example: red and green).
• High contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation.
• Can be tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out.

HARMONY• Agreement• Pleasing to the eye• way of combining elements of art to accent their
similarities and bind picture parts into a whole. • Often achieved through repetition and simplicity.
JUXTAPOSITIONBeing placed close together or side by side to
provoke comparison, contrast or irony.
NEGATIVE SPACE• Empty space in an artwork, a void. • Sometimes a bad thing, though other
times used creatively to express something or draw emphasis.
SILHOUETTEAn outline filled with a solid color,
typically black on a white ground.
VIGNETTEan unbordered picture, often a portrait the
edges of which fade off or blur into the color of its surrounding area.

CLEAN / FLAT Refinement—elements look
like they belong & benefit / complement design as a whole.
Spacing - images aren’t cluttered in any way
• Alignment – using a “grid” system. Smooth and unbroken lines are visually pleasing.
• Typography--limited/appropriate use of fonts
• Color— light, neutral and limited color palette
Minimalistic design. Crisp edges, bright colors
and 2D / flat illustrations.• Decorative elements are
unnecessary clutter. If aspect serves no functional purpose, it's a distraction
• Bright, contrasting colors make illustrations pop from backgrounds / grab attention.
• Images like icons can easily be understood.

Reflex
Interchangeable lenses & allows for more control of settings and final image.
IRIS (F-STOPS)• Adjustable opening used to control amount of
light coming through the lens• Measured in F-STOPS
– Large F-STOP = small hole (aperture)– Small F-STOP = big hole (aperture)
EXPOSURE
EXPOSURE
APERTUREThe actual hole that is created by the iris
EXPOSURE
ISOCamera’s sensitivity to lightHigher ISO = higher exposureHigher ISO = grainy picture
SHUTTER• Opens and closes multiple times a second• Shutter speed = How fast camera’s shutter opens
and closes in a second• INCREASING shutter speed DECREASES exposure

TRY THIS…• Go with your group• Experiment with shutter speed, iris
(f-stops), and ISO.
• Each person take 3 pictures of the same thing:– 1 good– 1 overexposed– 1 underexposed
• Experiment again!
TYPOGRAPHY• The arrangement, style and appearance of printed matter.
• How you use fonts

• Sink camera—each member takes a high contrast picture of someone’s face
