1. INT. TOM'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

FAITH a nice looking girl of 29. Dressed in a tank topover leggings with a jeans jacket. She looks out the

window at a car. TOM a handsome and athletic man of41, dressed in a checkered cotton shirt and jeans sitson the couch watching TV.

TOMWhat's so interesting outthe window? Come overhere.

Faith takes a deep breath, one more look then leavesthe window.

2. EXT. ADAM'S CAR - NIGHT

ADAM a good looking young man of 35, dressed in awhite short- sleeved crew neck T-shirt and flannelpajama pants sits in his car staring out the window. Acouple of tears fall from his eyes as he picks up hisphone and dials.

MARK (O.S.)

Hello.

ADAMHey man.

MARK (O.S.)Are you OK? What'swrong with your voice?

ADAMMe and Faith had thislong talk today, and we

agreed that we wouldget back together. Shetold me she would breakup with her newboyfriend and comeback to me. That was 6o'clock, 8 hours ago!

MARK (O.S.)She could be anywhere,anything could havehappened. She couldawent back home.

ADAMShe is in his house, I cansee them right now.What should I do? I'velost her forever.

MARK (O.S.)Go home, and tomorrowwe will take care of it.It's late now.

Adam receives a text message from Faith. It reads"sorry baby I cant". Adam throws the cell phone on theadjoining chair and drives away.

3. INT. TOM'S APARTMENT - DAY

Faith paints a picture of a surreal nature. Tom entersthe apartment and walks to Faith's drawing room.

TOM

Hi Hun.

FAITHHey sweety. So what doyou think?

TOMThe colors are nice. I justwish you would draw,you know, flowers; abowl of fruits; me.

FAITHWhat an encouragingthing to say two daysbefore I submit mypainting to theevaluation committee.You know how important

this is for me. Showingone of my paintings inthe "VancouverContemporaryExhibition" will finally

get me some neededrecognition.

TOMOh, honey, you worrytoo much. I'm sure you'lldo fine. Hey, why don'tyou submit this one. Thisone looks.. artsy.

Tom points to a painting on the wall. The picture is of

a beggar sitting on the pavement of a street. He holdssomething in his hand that isn't quite clear. Sittingbesides him is another beggar whispering somethingin his ear. Just a couple of feet away from them is afrowning man in a business suit with a black tie losearound his neck, smoking a cigar and clearly looksstressed out. Faith giggles.

FAITHYeah, I'm sure it does.It's "HappyBeggar/Bastard BusinessMan" It's my favoritepainting. And I can onlywish I painted it.

FAITHJavier Ramon,revolutionary,

philosopher, painter. Hispaintings always raisequestions about humanunderstanding andperception. He's so deepand beautiful.

And what's so deepabout this painting?

Faith Rises and leans on Tom who is sitting in front ofthe paining

FAITHIt's a painting thatexplores happiness. Youhave the juxtaposition ofthe beggar who is happyand the business manwho is depressed. Thenyou wonder: Why is thebusiness mandepressed? Is he

stressed out from work?Did he lose somemoney? Or, is hedepressed because he isa bastard? And then lookat the beggar, he issmiling as if he has noworry on his mind. He isholding something in hishand, but we cant seewhat it is. Could the

business man havegiven him money? Is hesmiling because theother beggar just toldhim something funny? Itkeeps you thinking.

Tom leans away forcing Faith to fall in his arms.

TOMYou girls like tocomplicate things. Ithink he was trying tosay: money can't buyyou love.

Tom smiles, and takes out an expensive looking boxfrom his pocket.

TOM (CONT'D)

But no one says I can'ttry.

Faith is amazed and gives Tom the "you shouldn'thave" look then opens the box containing an

expensive necklace. Faith is speechless, she's opensher mouth, but Tom kisses her. Faith kisses himpassionately.

4. INT. ADAM'S OFFICE - DAY

Adam sits in his office. He looks at the wall, andchecks facebook. He calls Faith, she doesn't answer.He calls Faith again, and again, and again. Every timehis cell phone rings, his heart pounds heavily hoping itwould be her. Finally, his cell phone rings, it's Faith.

ADAMHi Faith.

FAITH (O.S.)Hi Adam, how are you?

ADAMI'm good, I'm good. I'vebeen trying to call you.

FAITH (O.S.)I know. Listen, I need topick up some stuff fromyour apartment, can Icome today after work? Ihave the keys in caseyou wont be there, ifthat's OK with you?

ADAMI'm too tired to do

anything, I'll probably behome.

5. INT. ADAM'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Adam wanders around the apartment aimlessly. Thedoor bell rings, Adam opens the door. It's Faith holdingan empty duffle bag.

ADAMHey sweety.

Adam tries to kiss her but she swiftly ducks away.

FAITHHi Adam, how are you?Sorry about yesterday.

ADAMYeah, I wanted to talk toyou about that. Whathappened, you weresupposed to break upwith him and move backhere.

Faith sees a magazine on the kitchen table.

FAITHArtMag? What's thisdoing here?

ADAMI wanted to see if yourpainting was chosen thisyear or not. You were soclose last year,

remember.

FAITHOf course I do. No, butthat will be in nextmonths issue, if mypainting gets chosen.

ADAMIt has this interestingarticle about Dali too.

Come on, tell me, whathappened yesterday?

FAITHListen. I think I'm gonnagive this new thing a try,OK? Will you help me dothat?

ADAMNo I will not, why shouldI?

Faith gathers some of her belongings from the

bedroom including tops and make-up. She picks up apair of her shoes.

FAITHWhy should you? Wellyou should because ifyou had a pair of shoesyou would treat it withmore respect.

ADAMShoes? What the hell doshoes have to do withanything, Faith?

FAITHThe value of your shoesdepends on how youthink of them. When youhave new shoes; youpolish and take care ofthem and they sparkleaccording to the careyou put on them. As forthe older shoes youhave in the back of yourcloset, they may not beyour prettiest, but theyare at your service. Thequestion is, why beselfish? Or why keepthem? Of course, youcan give them away.You do not need to keepthem.

ADAMI never thought of youas a new or old pair ofshoes, you are my baby.I love you, I want to bewith you. Come on,

FAITH

6. INT. A BAR - NIGHT

Mark and Adam sit in a bar drinking beer.

MARKAnd just by selling the T-shirts alone, they willmake enough profit to..

Mark snaps his finger.

MARK (CONT'D)Hey.. Where are you?What's wrong with youman? You were really

excited when you firstbroke-up.

ADAMMy ego hurts man. Youknow, I am not used tobeing dumped.

MARKThat's bullshit. Your egoshould be over that by

now. Admit it, you're inlove with her.

ADAMI don't know. All I knowis that I want her back. Ican't stand the thoughtof her being with

another man. It's notfair.

MARKLook, you are not a bad

person. You gotta be fairto your self and moreimportantly to Faith.She's got somethinggood going on for her. Ifyou make her lose thatfor nothing, it would bejust selfish.

ADAMThen, why does she

keep sending me thosestrange text messagesthat I don't understandanything from. "Ithought love couldconquer all" or "I am notenjoying this". What thehell is she not enjoying?Being with that douchebag, or not being withme? I just don't

understand her. Whatdoes she want?

MARKListen. You've told herthat you love her; thatyou want her back andthat you're sorry. Youmade your point clear.She's a smart girl, shegets it. Now she knows if

she wants you back, allshe has to do is comeback. But if she doesn't,then you'll have to getthrough this with somedignity.

Adam isn't paying attention to Mark anymore, and isstarting to get drunk.

ADAMWhat could he possibly

offer that I can't?Money? So what? Amillion dollar Condo? Sowhat? Is it all about themoney?

MARKMy advice. Let it go. Lether come to you.

7. EXT. ADAM'S APARTMENT - DAY

Faith dials her cell phone.

FAITHHi Adam.

ADAM (O.S.)Heeeeey. How are you?

FAITH

I'm great, thank you.Listen, is my camera atyour house by anychance?

ADAM (O.S.)Yes it is. Do you wantme to drop it over orsomething?

FAITH

Actually, I'm close toyour place, is it OK if Icome and pick it up?

ADAM (O.S.)Sure.

8. INT. ADAM'S APARTMENT - DAY

Adam combs his hair, wears some perfume andchecks himself in the mirror. The doorbell rings. It'sFaith.

ADAM

Hey. Look at you.

FAITHHey, how are you?Where have you been?You don't call anymore.

ADAMYeah, I've been busywith work and stuff.Congratulations, on yourpainting, and for thearticle in this month'sArtMag.

FAITHThanks for the textmessage cheapo.

(Pause)

FAITH (CONT'D)Anyway, it's only a smallarticle.

ADAMIn the biggest artmagazine in Vancouver.Finally, people are goingto appreciate you.

FAITHWho?

Adam walks towards Faith, places his palms on her

face, caresses the other side of her face with hisfingers and slowly attempts to kiss her.

ADAMWho are you thinking?

Faith, reluctantly ducks away.

9. INT. TOM'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Tom and Faith dress up for a night out. Faith isdressed in a black short dress, and Tom is dressed inan expensive designer black pair of pants with a whiteshirt and a black tie still lose around his neck.

TOMHoney, do you still thinkabout Adam?

FAITHSometimes. Why?

TOMListen, I don't want toput any pressure on you.But I would like to knowwhere this is going. Imean; are you justtrying this out or are youreally serious about us? Iam not getting anyyounger, and I feel it's

time for me to havestability in my life. Iknow you want children,and I am desperate tohave them. So what'sthe deal? Tell me what'son your mind?

FAITHNothing.

Tom walks towards Faith sitting on a chair putting onher make-up, and picks up the necklace he boughther.

TOMHoney, I know the mainreason you left Adamwas because he didn't

want to get married orhave children, andbecause he actedimmature most of thetime, and took your

relation for granted. Youknow I will never dothat, so where is theconfusion coming from?

Tom places the necklace on Faith's neck.

10. INT. ADAM'S APARTMENT - DAY

Adam, looking as miserable as ever talks on the phonewith a GIRL.

GIRL (O.S.)Who is this?

ADAMI can't believe you forgotme? It's me, Adam.

GIRL (O.S.)Look Adam. Jessywarned me that you will

try to call me. I'm notjust a booty call you cancall when you're drunk.And besides, I have aboyfriend. Take care.

The girl hangs up. The door bell rings. Adam opens thedoor. It's Faith.

Visual Concept

The Bastard Business Man is a drama that explores the concept of what brings women

happiness. The story takes place in modern day Vancouver. The sets will evoke the

personalities of the characters. Faith the artist lives with Tom the business man in his house.

The physical environment of Toms house is chic but without soul, huge LCD TV, leather sofas,

expensive coffee tables, the walls will be bare and only decorated with light fixtures to

emphasize his shallowness. Faith has a painting room in Toms apartment that will be filled with

paintings and plants to emphasize culture and warmth. Adam, on the other hand, isnt as well off

as Tom, but, nevertheless his apartment shows taste. His apartment will be flat pack furniture,

small TV with paintings and plants throughout the apartment. Adam works in a large

multinational company, but he is an executive so he only has a cubicle in the office. His cube is

decorated with pictures of him and Faith, his favorite sports team logos, birthday cards, etc.

The lighting-style of the film will be in high-key. Scenes will generally appear bright with few

areas that will be underexposed according to the dramatic need of the story. Consequently the

sets and the costumes should be in light tones as well. The color palette for scenes including

Adam will be bluish to signify his state of depression, while scenes with Faith will tend to be

more purplish to signify the emotional state of confusion she is in.

The most important of the props in this story are the paintings. 2 paintings are of particular

importance as they represent two major themes. Happy Beggar / Bastard Business Man is

important because it explores the theme of happiness in the story. And the painting Faith is

developing for the art gallery which resembles a question mark that represents confusion. Both

paintings will be Surreal art which is characterized by unexpected juxtapositions; this resembles

Faiths actions throughout the story. Faith will need paint brushes, a board and gouache. Other

important props will be the fictionalArtMagin Adams apartment, the actors cell phones, and the

expensive necklace Tom gives to Faith, that also resembles a question mark, like Faiths

painting.

Faith is a surreal artist, which clearly reflects on her sense of fashion, but without a noticeable

trend. One day she is dressed in swing coats, peg leg trousers and sash belts, the other day in

jeans and tank tops, and then in a classy short black dress. There is both a sense of

recklessness and taste in the way she dresses. Her use of make-up is minimal as she believes

in her inner beauty, and refuses to paint her face as she does her pictures. Tom is very plain,

checkered shirts tucked in his jeans for most of the story, except when he is dressing up for the

party in which he is dressed in a black suit with a black tie loose around his neck, to resemble

the Bastard Business Man from the painting. Adam for the most part is dressed in short sleeved

crew neck t-shirts over his pajamas to signify that he has lost interest in life after his separation

from Faith.
