RiNo Art District
The RiNo BID’s resources are dedicated to projects and programming in four key areas—advocacy, placemaking, marketing & branding and support for RiNo’s artists, creatives, & local businesses. The RiNo Denver GID was established to fund infrastructure improvements and maintenance on the west side of RiNo including the enhancements to Brighton Blvd and its long-term maintenance.

Platte River & Bike Trail V isitors to RiNo are able to use RiNo Made as their starting point on their exploration
of the district. Through the “stART here” program at RiNo Made, visitors are encouraged to start their First Fridays at the store to get a map of participating galleries and studios throughout the district as well as further information on the best routes, featured artists, prominent street art, and nearby businesses. This concierge experience carries beyond First Friday to allow visitors, tourists, and even locals an insider’s look at RiNo with just a simple visit to RiNo Made to pick up a guide and chat with the store and district staff about any questions they may have.
T he RiNo Art District has a significant concentration of artists and makers who create and manufacture a number of diverse products in the district. Through the RiNo Made program, RiNo supports these
artists and makers by helping them market and promote their unique work. After opening in March of 2018, the RiNo Made store quickly grew into a true destination for all who live, work, or visit RiNo. RiNo Made offers local artists, makers, and artisans the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work in an active market hall. Many of the RiNo Made artists exhibit their work in RiNo galleries and use the RiNo Made store as a way to promote themselves while giving back to the art district. Some artists use it as an opportunity to sell and display work that one may not find in a traditional gallery setting such as street art, jewelry art, fiber arts, and textiles. The store is also home to several RiNo artists that do not have gallery or retail representation. Each artist receives 60% of the profits from their sales with 40% going back to the RiNo Art District to support artist initiatives and the store’s operating costs. Through the RiNo Made program, our goal is not only to sell artists’ and makers’ work from RiNo but to create a valuable resource for artists to grow their business and make a living with their art. Monthly RiNo Made Salons offer creatives valuable entrepreneurship training and networking including skills to improve their creative business such as product photography, basics of website design and SEO, accounting for creatives, and copyright law for artists. Ironton GalleryFEATURED GALLERY
T he RiNo Art District has welcomed over half a dozen new galleries since the beginning of 2017. One recent edition is the new
iteration of Ironton Gallery. A monthly featured artist lineup is curated by RiNo Made Gallery Manager and RiNo artist, Alex Pangburn. Ironton Distillery & Crafthouse hosts the First Friday opening receptions.
Image shown is the work of Ironton Gallery’s February 2019 featured artist and long time RiNo artist, Jeff Richards. Jeff combines in his artwork an interest in evolutionary philosophy, frontier science, mystical exploration, and a general sense of the wonder and wackiness of consciousness. S usan Wick was born in Madison, Wisconsin and graduated from University of Wisconsin, NYU, and Berkeley. After
receiving a graduate degree in Berkeley, Susan switched to art because of her introduction to Ed Rossbach, Kay Sekimachi, and a handful of other influential artists.
Living primarily in Denver since the early ’80s, Susan focused on City Spirit Café and the LoDo neighborhood before it was Lodo. She has lived in RiNo at Z Wick Place, which remains her main studio and home, for over 20 years. Her studio is open to the public on occasion. In 2015, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art presented Wild Women Never Get the Blues, a 50-year survey of Susan’s work. (p.21 #129)

HOW TO CREATE LIFESTYLE PHOTO IMAGES FOR YOUR INSTAGRAM AND STILL HAVE TIME FOR YOUR ACTUAL BUSINESS: As a fellow entrepreneur, Amy K. Wright knows the pain of wanting to create a beautiful and engaging Instagram page and still have time to run the rest of her business. This fun and interactive class gave students a basic grounding in photographing their art for use in social media posts. Wright also explored tips on making social media promotion more streamlined for busy creatives. BUSINESS GROWTH PLANNING WORKSHOP: To progress in anything, you need a clear plan forward and continued, smart action. Building your business is no different. In this fun and educational workshop, hosted by business growth expert Tasha King, students were guided through a business planning worksheet that ended by creating some easy to manage tasks, projects and goals. King also explained how to continue these beneficial practices each quarter. TACKLING LEGAL MATTERS FOR CREATIVE ENTREPRENEURS AND ARTS-BASED BUSINESSES: Launching and successfully managing any business is a lot of work, but this workshop was designed to provide artists, writers, designers, musicians and any other creative entrepreneur with key information on a number of legal issues that are particularly relevant to arts-based businesses. Students were guided through key legal matters encountered by creative entrepreneurs and best practices for how to address them, including relevant and preferred business models, business formation, intellectual property, and licensing. This Salon was in partnership with CBCA’s Colorado Attorneys for the Arts (CAFTA) program which serves individual artists, cultural nonprofits and creative businesses across Colorado. The class featured speaker Shirin Chahal, Attorney at the Law Offices of Daniel T. Goodwin. ART BUSINESS + MARKETING DEVELOPMENT 101: This course, presented by the RiNo Art District and Station 16 Gallery Denver, examined how to develop and implement artist marketing strategies. The course presented a list of grants to look into and consider applying for, sample contracts for working with galleries, types of art galleries and online store options, marketing tips for artists, and tips on using social media to market artwork.
ANDY WARHOL’S SCHOOL OF CONVERSATION: Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran) summed up his first meeting with Andy Warhol: “He was shy but sharp, witty, and full of nervous energy.” Many people just give a one word description of Andy in social situations: Shy. It is the bane of the artist’s world -- making beautiful art and the difficulty of talking about it with the world. Denver Public Library and RiNo Art District presented this amusing and useful salon centered on facing the world socially. In this workshop, hosted by Libby Barbee and Brandon Laird, students were treated to a Factory-like party replete with an Andy Warhol impersonator wandering the event taking polaroid pics of the attendees. Barbee and Laird guided students through a series of exercises designed to draw out each student and encourage thoughtful conversation about their artwork. Each exercise became increasingly more art-centric and by the end of the evening, guests were talking in a relaxed manner about their own work. BUILDING A STRONG WEB PRESENCE: With so many people using the internet and social media to learn about businesses, an artist can benefit from having an awesome, intuitive website. The Denver Public Library has business databases and other free resources artists may find helpful for identifying potential buyers and building free or inexpensive websites that will appeal to potential customers. The Denver Public Library’s small business specialist, Amanda Armstrong, led students through a short course in DPLs business resources and small business databases. Students learned how to access these databases as well as how to book an appointment for one-on-one help with a business librarian at Central Library. RECORDKEEPING MADE SIMPLE: For the Artsy Types. This information is a must have for those of us who know how to paint, create, and express ourselves but forget where we put that last receipt! Carla Vaughn, of Financial Literacy First, offered a workshop in recordkeeping 101 to teach artists and creatives quick and simple ways for staying organized on the run and keeping track of business expenses and income. Students left with beneficial information on keeping complete records for taxes and accounting, as well as guidance on creating and using CRM (customer relationship management) tools.
T he Denver Public Library and RiNo Art District began their programming collaboration in 2017. The partnership was formed during a meeting in which other topics were being discussed and DPL
asked if the offices (then located on Blake St.) might ever be used for auxillary programming. This idea was enthusiastically embraced by the RiNo crew and from that simple ask grew an exciting and mutually beneficial partnership that has hosted a wide variety of creative and artful RiNo events. While many of the events take place in the offices of the RiNo Art District, some are presented in the RiNo Made store and in various venues around RiNo. Find events online: rinoartdistrict.org/support/rino-made; denverlibrary.org/rinopopup Soon this collaboration will expand to the RiNo Park project: After years of negotiations and advocacy, RiNo was awarded control of two historic buildings within the RiNo Park. The park buildings will serve as a community hub that celebrates art, innovation, education, small business, and community empowerment for the neighborhoods in RiNo. Denver Public Library looks forward with anticipation to this continued collaboration and working to support the community and the efforts of RiNo Art District.
