Art is relative. No matter what form of art you see, you will always have your own opinion. Think about it; you go to the movies, art exhibitions, drama productions,
read poetry (p.10 -11), even the music you listen to is a form of art, and you will either like it or you won’t. So what makes good art good? Is it the feeling you get
when experiencing it or the technique the artists use?
Art Dubai and Design Days (p.13) were the talk of the town this month. There were art pieces that triggered conversations and others that triggered loads of
laughter and fun discussions, but they all made us feel something.
There are great creative minds in this world. Like the person that came up with the idea of making Kony famous in order to stop the injustice (p.36-37). Thank
you to the wonderful people that invented Basketball (p. 44-47). What would we do when we finish uni and school work if we didn’t have our TV shows (p.40-41)?
I like to think that everything in this world is a creation of a virtual paint brush. You wake up every morning and decide on which clothes to wear, which people to
hang out with, who you want to become and how you react to things.

AL GHURAIR UNIVERSITY STUDENT WINS FIRST PRIZE IN ARTICLES
WRITING ON ENVIRONMENT Ms. Sara Sayed Ahmed Mohamed Esmail El Shenawi, from the Al Ghurair
University, Dubai bagged the first prize in the News Paper Articles category at the 11th Annual Environment Competition 2011-2012. The
theme of the competition, held under the aegis of the Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi, was “Issues faced by mangroves and efforts taken by
the UAE to protect them”. The competition was open for participation from all tertiary students studying in the United Arab Emirates and
articles were judged on the basis of the extent of research, originality, factual content, writing style, appeal to the relevant target, and
pertinence of the content to the theme.
Ms. Shenawi is of the opinion that the protection of the mangroves is not the sole responsibility of the Government alone, and strongly believes
that all other stakeholders should contribute their best to create an environmentally-literate society to preserve the precious flora and
fauna of the UAE.
DUBAI YOUTH ORCHESTRA The word orchestra evokes stereotypical images of serious-looking
adults in bow-ties with their big instruments and a conductor. But on Friday night, the Dubai Youth Orchestra, dominated by members
who are youth aged 28 and below, gave a different meaning to the word. For their debut concert, the 28-member Dubai Youth Orchestra
treated guests to the music of J.S. Bach, Fredric Chopin, Franz Schubert, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to name a few.
The orchestra’s goal is to provide an environment where young musicians can come together to rehearse and perform masterpieces
from around the globe. The members’ ages, however, are not a hindrance to establishing a standard for the orchestra.
ESMOD STORE OPENINGFrench fashion university, Esmod, Dubai branch opened its first store to showcase and sell its students’ collections. The store, located in Wafi Mall, is a great initiative that not only promotes the students’ talents, but also shows the public what the university does, its courses and activities. The big, bright window displays of the Wafi store make it really stand out in the luxury mall.
The stars of the event, however, were the students and their work, with family and friends attending the launch to support them as they showed off their collections and collaborative efforts with other students to the press and public. Well done to all the students and to the Esmod University for a great event and a great store!

BSAK HANDS OVER 100 BIKES TO ZAMBIAN SCHOOL CHILDREN
Two members of BSAK (British School of Al Khubairat) staff, Miss Louise Jenkins and Miss Michele Fleming, travelled to Zambia during half term
to present the charity World Bike Relief with 100 bikes that BSAK has provided through its fundraising this year.
Representing the school, Miss Jenkins and Miss Fleming met with Dave Neiswander, Head of African Operations for WBR, who arranged for
the bikes to be handed over to Kafululu School. In total, 196 bikes were presented to the school, bought with money raised by students at BSAK
and our friends at Charles Wright Academy in the States.
Whilst in Zambia, the teachers were involved in the building and distribution of the bikes amongst the children and their families.
The idea behind WBR is that by providing school children with bikes
gives them access to an education, as most children have a very long journey to school and no means of transport. The WBR programme works
very effectively, and is very much owned by the local community. Each community appoints a supervisory committee made up of teachers, students, parents and local headmen. The committee decides which
students receive bikes, and ensures that they use their bikes to get to school. If they don’t turn up to school, the bikes are re-assigned.
The programme also has a wider impact on the local economy. For
example, the committee chooses one local person per 50 bikes to train up as a bike mechanic. This ensures that the bikes are maintained, and
creates business opportunities for the mechanics. All the bikes are assembled in Zambia, and the majority of staff at WBR are Zambian.
TASTE OF DUBAI: A CINDERELLA TALE TO A PRINCE’S APPETITE Dear foodaholics, if you missed out on Dubai’s food festival then let me inform you of how big a loss you’ve encountered. Three wholesome days of music, fun and lots of food for everyone! Pardon the excessive exclamation marks you will find in my narration since this was my first time at Taste of Dubai and I still haven’t recovered from the shot of pure-awesomeness that my appetite experienced. For three days.
My friend accompanied me as we discovered this food festival on foot. Stalls, more stalls, a fashionable crowd, staff distributing vouchers and pamphlets, goodie bags, a live band, which honestly could have performed better, live cooking stations featuring celebrity chefs (oo la la!) and people queued outside stalls on a work-free-Friday. Now that you know the summary, let’s get to the juicy details!
The food stalls were cleverly arranged to feature retail outlets at the start, a few award winning restaurants further ahead and the world-renowned celebrity chefs’ creations at the very end. Since we were already familiar with PF Changs, Da Shi Dai, Chi Zen and other retail dining restaurants, we decided to invest in the unknown eateries. Thanks to a friend’s suggestion, we experimented with Gaucho, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Seafire and Mahek.
Overall, Taste of Dubai was an interactive exhibition of what’s delicious in town, what’s coming up and where to invest for those occasions! For a noob like me, the three days were a Cinderella-ish fairy tale to a prince’s appetite!

Psychics. Sceptical already? Well, it doesn’t matter because in this work of
fiction, psychics exist, and two extremely powerful ones clash. As an infant, Julia
Severn’s mother committed suicide, and she is forced to relive this nightmare when she clashes with the infamous
Madame Ackerman. Julia, as a student at an institute for psychics, was extremely
promising. However, out of jealousy and envy, her mentor chose to inflict a
punishment with repercussions that changed Julia’s life. She ends up moving
to Manhattan and, because of her gifts, is asked to track down an artist that may
or may not have a link to her deceased mother through psychic clues and ghosts.
A story about how a daughter’s love for her mother can have an overpowering
influence and how female rivalries can be deadly, this book is an excellent example
of well-written fiction. Those who love the mystical and the mysterious will love it.
THE VANISHERS by Heidi Julavits
Children of divorce are sometimes handed off to people to be looked after until divorce agreements are settled. This is exactly what happens to a kid named Jack Gantos when he looks forward excitedly to a two month vacation, but eventually ends up being loaned to his next door neighbour while his parents battle it out. Excitement however, along with a couple of nose bleeds unfold as Jack spends his time with the obituary writing neighbour and others such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Hells Angels, a man on a trike, and his encounters with a homemade airplane, wax, and cookies among other things. An admittedly hilarious narrative, this is the type of a novel anyone can read and love and understand.

Every March, Dubai turns into the Art and Design hub of the region for a week. Two major exhibitions are set in the best locations of this glittering city. Design Days Dubai is one and Art Dubai, the other.
Design Days Dubai is focused on the progressive, edgy and contemporary Interior Design pieces. Works from all over the world are gathered in a huge tent outside the Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world. This year’s participants included the Carpenters Workshop Gallery- London, Carwan Gallery- Beirut, Galerue BSL- Paris, and R20th Century- New York just to name a few.
Art Dubai, on the other hand is a massive exhibition held at the Madinat Jumeirah. This is its sixth year and slowing down is not part of the organiser’s vocabulary. Over 75 galleries from 32 countries exhibited their works across video, photography, sculpture and live installations. The event also included the Global Art Forum and an exhibition of work by the Abraaj Capital Art Prize winners. One particularly memorable installation was “They Were Here” by Marya Kazun that involved shattered glass on the floor with two humans wrapped in a semi-transparent cloth crawling around. It is encouraging and inspiring to see the community rapidly growing and developing. There are plenty of art galleries around town, and let’s not forget that Abu Dhabi is catching up quite well.

It’s not your typical scare-the-pants-off run through but it fills the quota of zombie-killing. Fine by me.

NervecellLOCAL BAND
Nervecell formed in late 1999; however, it wasn’t until late 2003 that current members Rami and James joined the band. The guys started jamming; their similar taste in music got the chemistry going. At that point the band focused on writing original material and played anywhere and everywhere, overcoming many obstacles. The band had decided to take their music to the people rather than wait for anyone to reach them and focused on maintaining a fan base, starting up a website and releasing albums, having merchandise and so on. As for the band name, Nerves are an essential part of the human body to function and cell derived from prison cell (a feeling of imprisonment). Barney added that he uses the word Nerve to depict the feeling of frustration that we all go through at times and cell adds to the sense of being stuck at that point.
The EP ‘Human Chaos’ was released in 2004, which was followed by the album ‘Preaching Venom’. These two records led to international acclaim and a tour in Europe and Australia. Throughout their existence, Nervecell have toured, and have been honored to do so, with many bands that have influenced them in the first place (including opening for Metallica in Abu Dhabi; one of their biggest accomplishments); the most recent one being the Nov/Dec 2011 Morbid Angel tour. When it came to their most memorable moments, all 3 members had to say:
Rami: “I had lots of fun with Suffocation (along with other bands) and with Morbid Angel. I enjoy festivals a lot, as well, where you see lots of bands perform, not to mention how exciting it is to perform for huge crowds in the first place. Enjoying the shows, hanging out with friends and fans is a big part of the touring experience other than the performance itself.”
Barney: “Just the fact that we make friends and fans every night and get to play countries we never dreamt of even being in is always a very humbling experience in itself. It’s every band’s dream to tour the world; we’ve been blessed to have a fair share of fans that are supportive. Every tour is a mission and we constantly watch over each other, you never know when it’s going to be a bad show or an excellent show, so its really a thrill every night to get up there.”
James: “Touring with Suffocation is and will always be my favorite tour regardless of what the future holds, with respect to all the bands out there.”
All the members are influenced by death metal, many thrash and death bands such as Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura; much more extreme styles such as Deicide, Suffocation, Morbid Angel, Death and even some black/progressive metal. Nervecell’s style is a mix of thrash and death with their own hint of oriental and Middle Eastern touches.
As for the rising local bands, in general, a DIY attitude is the key to success. The world will not discover you through Myspace or a Facebook page, so get an album out, practice your instrument and let your music do the talking because it will benefit you in the end when things come together and move forward (you have to earn the respect and support you get).
Now Nervecell’s future is looking brighter than ever and they’re hoping to be on stage again soon (possibly even Dubai). New material is also being written for the upcoming album but no dates are set. Keep your eye on the updates by following Nervecell on Twitter and Facebook.

Although based and set in medieval times, this film features the best tricks and visual effects of the modern day. The whole story is more tongue-in-cheek than serious. Very entertaining for friends gathering at home.

A personal story based on the life of Britain’s first woman Prime Minister- Margaret Thatcher, as of what it is like now. The present of Mrs. Thatcher is more of a gloomy story with her constantly still living a life in her late husband’s company. The picture provides a powerful, deep and an interesting look at one of the world’s most powerful and uncompromising political figures.

shine in MDNA; at times it feels the record was specifically aimed at Avril Lavigne and Ke$ha fans, especially in “ Superstar”. All in all, this record is
definitely more exciting than “Hard Candy”; Madonna clearly put more effort into it. It’s fun, lots of good and quality beats. This is the material for a brilliant show in June. Can’t wait!

auditioned for the X Factor UK in 2010. Unfortunately, they could not continue past the boot camp stage as soloists, but luckily for us, Simon
Cowell realized that these five boys cannot be wasted and put them through to the Live Shows as a band. Their new album, ‘Up All Night’ is one of the most popular albums out there; it features 13 tracks with a bonus of two
exclusive tracks. What more can we ask for? The songs make you want to cry and smile literally within minutes.

‘TAKE CARE’Everyone was watching to see whether Drake is a lasting artist or not. But this album answers the question. The album not only set him closer to the hip-hop scene but also made him one of the highest rollers and he is set to become one of the greatest artists. The album is not too different from “Cole World: Sideline Story” but still has that exclusive sound and lyrics. Some may say Drake is too soft for a rapper but his lyrics are about life and what he’s gone through, which makes it stronger and more relevant to whoever listens to it. He’s put the best of two worlds together by combining rap with lyrical hip-hop. This album needs you to sit down and listen to every word, which will help you appreciate the music when you listen to it again afterwards.

I had never heard of David Guetta nor heard of his music until “love took me over” with the beat and electro-house sounds only the Merlin of DJs can marshal. From then, I was hooked to his magnetic style of music and the diversified electronic sounds and urban dance craze he has mastered.
As the day of the concert dawned, my friends and I piled into a car and drove off to watch the world-class DJ perform live at the Yas Arena. I was in awe of the number of people who had gathered at Yas Island - waves of people in their teens, twenties, thirties, forties and fifties had flocked to the arena to hear the meister spin his magic. With mounting excitement, I could just feel that it was going to be a good night – it’s not everyday that you get to watch the world’s number one house DJ perform.
As people lined up in queues, with under-age teens trying their luck to get past security, the lovely DJs Natalie Brogan and maDJam got the party going with their own mixes. As everyone danced away, warming up for the main act, the lights suddenly dimmed and “NOTHING BUT THE BEAT” in blinding red, started flashing on the massive LED screens as David Guetta took to the stage with “Sweat” by Snoop Dogg.
The crowd went wild, jumping and screaming, rendering Yas Arena into a colossal house party as David Guetta played his hit mixes such as “Getting Over You”, “Titanium”, “Love Is Gone”, “Without You”, “Good Feeling” and his international debut “When Love Takes Over” with Kelly Rowland.
There were moments where David Guetta would let the crowd pitch in with the lyrics and I wont lie; I was definitely among those who screamed our hearts out as he masterfully spun his biggest hits. He ended the night by playing his universal vocal hook by the Black Eyed Peas, “I Gotta Feeling”, which proved that he truly is unrivalled and number one in the house music genre. I was left in total awe and felt like I was walking on air, having had a chance to experience “nothing but the beat”!

Duran Duran was yet another great band brought to Dubai by Done Events on the 8th of March 2012 at the Sevens stadium. The group, which originate from Birmingham, had their unique style of music developing throughout the 80s with a mix of dance, synthpop and new wave.
The show started off rather quietly and seriously when LeBon came on stage. Even though the crowd was quite unenthusiastic at the beginning, it all changed once the band kicked it off with their infamous “View to a Kill”.
While Duran Duran haven’t been on top of the charts in a while, they haven’t lost their magic and still sounded great; I especially loved how smooth Simon’s voice was in every song. They performed their top hits such as “Girls On Film”, “Notorious” and “Hungry Like The Wolf” (which was a little different from the rest of the set). Apart from sounding great, they also looked to be in fantastic shape. Their outfits, their presence, and the amount of energy they had on stage was phenomenal, especially with LeBon changing his outfits quite a bit and pulling off some moves here and there. The crowd was packed with people in their late 30s but it was cool seeing some youngsters dancing the night away.
Overall, this band showed how they were still good at what they do, performing for over an hour and a half with visually striking lights, images and costumes. They did what they do best and I personally wish music like this were still as frequent.

His achievements so far show how, if you follow your dreams, together with hard work, commitment and dedication, you can make them come true. One8One caught up with Andrea, where he told us about his experiences this summer, his exciting future plans and the importance of just being yourself.
Hi Andrea, you’ve got an amazing talent. How old were you when you realised you wanted to be a Fashion Designer?Thank you! I didn’t always want to be a fashion designer. I’ve always loved drawing, and when I was younger, I originally wanted to be a cartoonist. However, when I was about six, I remember I went shopping with my mother, and once I saw all the famous designer clothing, I fell in love with fashion. Then I gradually started drawing people more rather than cartoon designs. I guess that was when I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was older, so since then I just threw myself into it.

If you could describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be?
Oh, that’s a difficult one! I think I would have to say I can be quite blunt
sometimes, also bubbly and quirky, I guess I’m unique with my fashion and
style, and you might not believe it but im usually very shy when you first meet me!
You completed an internship last year with the world famous designer Alice
Temperley, which must have been a great opportunity! How did you get to
organise that?My parents own a restaurant in Dubai
Marina called ‘Stefano’s’ (I recommend you all go there for amazing Italian
food!), and one night, a lady who works in PR was eating in the restaurant
and by chance I got talking to her and eventually got into a conversation about
my interest in fashion and showed her a few of my designs. She was quite
impressed I think, because after that she invited me to go along to a few fashion
events. I was so lucky! Last October, I was at an Alice Temperley event in
Dubai; I’m a huge fan of her work so I constantly kept waiting and nagging at
her security to meet her. I finally got the chance to talk to Alice at the after party,
and managed to show her a few of my designs - I was really nervous meeting
her! Then before I knew it, the next minute we were talking about interning
and she offered me a summer internship that year! Because of my passion and
determination to succeed in the fashion industry, I think she saw a lot of herself, when she was younger, in me. Through
Temperley, I also worked at London Fashion Week this year, which was
fantastic and I got to meet celebrities such as Pippa Middleton and Peaches
Gedolf, but it also opened my eyes as to how much work is necessary behind the
glitz and glamour; working behind the scenes is really hard work.
Wow! The fashion industry is known for being very tough, competitive, and
often really difficult to break into. So what was it like working with
Alice Temperley?Well, my first impression of her was that
she’d be really strict because I saw her at a very glamorous event and she was
wearing really high heels and constantly looked stressed! But once I saw her in
the warehouse, I instantly realised she’s actually really nice and relaxed; I mean
she runs around the workshop barefoot and is very hands on. In actual fact,
she’s quite young at heart and down to earth, but she’s fought very hard to get where she is. So I agree with that – the fashion industry is extremely difficult
to be successful in, so you have to know what you want and you have to fight
for it, because in life, without fighting you’ll gain nothing. Also, to be successful
doesn’t mean you have to get someone else in trouble, you work for yourself but
that doesn’t mean you go out of your

way to ruin someone else’s chances of getting what you both want. In life in general, you’re going to be better than some people and some people are going to be better than you, that’s just how it goes!
That’s a good way of looking at it! So what type of things did you learn about during your first internship?With Alice I pretty much learnt all the basics of working in the fashion industry, it was really interesting. When I first went there I had no idea how to work a sewing machine, but by the end of it I was almost a professional! I also saw what went in to the production of the clothes, and managed to do a bit of seaming of the clothes, which ended up with me making my own dress! It helped me improve on my fashion designing skills a lot.
Yes we heard about the amazing ‘Andrea’ dress, what an achievement! How did that come about?On the first day of my internship, Alice came up to me and said ‘design me 30 dresses’, which was a bit of a shock as I had just got there; but beforehand my mum had told me to do anything I can to impress her, so I set to work and designed 40 dresses! I gave them to Alice, and with her team - they had a look over all of them and out of the 40 chose their favourite four, then favourite two, then eventually their number one dress that I had designed. Next they told me that my next mission was to create the dress that they had chosen. So I
made the dress within a day, from 12pm-5pm, then 9pm-3am, so it was a lot of hard work and really tiring, but totally worth it, because when I gave it to Alice she said she really liked it and wanted to add it to her collection! I couldn’t believe it and was shocked. They released the dress a few months later and I’m so honoured it sold really well. My friend was just in America and she spotted my dress in a Temperley store there and it was nearly sold out, it’s crazy! It’s also available on www. netaporter.com so I’m really proud of it.
That’s fantastic. Who are your favourite fashion designers that you look up to?Aside from Alice Temperley obviously, I also love Chanel designs as they’re always elegant and classy. I’m a big fan of Christopher Kane shoes - they are so sleek and modern and when I see his pieces, I always wish I’d designed them myself. Also, Valentino’s classic clothes are so delicate in their finish - I think they’re made of really high quality materials.
Do you have any advice for any one8one readers who, like you, are interested in a career in fashion? While I appreciate that I’ve been very lucky as to how I’ve started my career, I think it is important to have a headstrong approach to the world of fashion and be prepared to work very hard. Nearly all my free time after school and weekends is taken up working on my designs and building my brand, but I’m sure all the hard work will
hopefully pay off! Not everything you design will be a success and I think you have to be prepared to have your work criticized constantly, but try not to take it personally, see it as constructive criticism and learn from your mistakes. Try to forget your insecurities and put yourself out there, network with as many people as possible - be confident in your work but don’t be arrogant. Everyone is unique, so most importantly, stay true to yourself and your creativity - don’t change who you are for anyone else.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?I’m actually really expanding my Andrea Brocca brand at the moment, so hopefully if all goes well in 10 years’ time it will have really branched out across the U.A.E. and internationally. I’m opening a shop in the fashion part of Wafi City Mall here in Dubai very soon, selling my designs, which is so exciting. It’s incredible to see my shop located near world class brands such as Gucci and I hope you all go check out my designs! I want to become the youngest fashion designer to headline at fashion week in Paris, New York, London and my hometown of Milan, which would be really cool, and also have my clothes featured in Vogue magazine - these ambitions really drive me to keep going. I also hope to graduate from the famous Central St. Martins in London and improve my abilities. Fingers crossed!

I know we, young people, are always being told that we can make a difference, and we are aware of that. But somehow, we don’t really count that for anything. Goes in one ear, out the other. But the Kony 2012 video made me WANT to do something. And this article is a step towards what I want.
To be honest, I didn’t know who Joseph Kony was until I clicked on the play button on Youtube. I didn’t know that this man from Uganda has been abducting kids, teenagers like you and me, some even younger, in order to make an army and help him stay in power. And the worst thing is, it’s been going on for more than 20 years, with over 30,000 kids taken away from their parents to forcefully fight alongside Kony. And all this is occurring right under our noses. Without us doing anything.
All I ask is of you to watch the Kony 2012 video. It has all the information you need. Then share it on prominent social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. Support the cause by telling your friends about it. As a consequence, more people will be aware of the abyss the youth of Africa are experiencing. Let’s combat Kony’s cruel doings. Let’s redefine and reshape our society. You as an individual can do something about this issue. SONY TABLET PNow here is a weirdo. As a follow-up to its super-successful
Tablet S, Sony has finally come up with a major surprise factor, Tablet P. This tablet is a clamshell, featuring two 5.5-inch
displays that act like one, which can be folded like a book. It runs on Honeycomb 3.2 (a bit of a disappointment there) and
features a “True Black” display. There will be those who’ll love it and those who’ll hate it - only time will show. One thing
is for sure though, Sony has got some confidence to release something so different.
Resolutionary! It’s the new year; March; and it’s the time for a new iPad. Apple have just introduced their new tablet and boy, it is something. First, the screen - the new
iPad packs a double of iPad 2’s resolution, shooting it up to 2048x1536 pixels in a 9.7-inch screen (that’s more than any HDTV screen). The next big feature is the LTE
(4G), 5 megapixel camera (similar to the in iPhone 4) with the capability of shooting 1080p video, dictation support (without Siri) and a 1GHz Apple A5X processor with quad-core graphics. The design of the tablet has not changed though; it is actually
thicker 9.4 mm (iPad 2 was 8.8 mm). This might disappoint some, but to others, it won’t matter. If you ask me, though, I’d say it’s not much faster than its predecessor,
but the screen is what makes this tablet beat the competition.
THE NEW IPAD
Last but not least is Samsung and its latest 7.7-inch offering. This is the form factor Samsung seems to believe in. True, the 7-inch slate is easier to handle, big enough to enjoy media, and comfortable to type on. However, is it big enough to be a tablet? This beauty features Micro SD, Micro SIM (LTE support), good battery that will last through a day, the only SuperAMOLED Plus display on a tablet and an IR Blaster to control your DVRs and TVs. Amongst the shortcomings is the 3.2 megapixel camera which is bad in low light conditions as well as terrible at shooting the aged 720p video. All in all, even though the camera is not that great, this tablet is a great mid-sized product of the bunch. And if you are really itching to take that picture, take out your phone or DSLR and click away.

Eight years after we first saw the arrogant, cocky and pretentious doctor
appear on our T.V screens, House MD. draws to a close and we say goodbye to
the Sherlock Holmes of medicine. The phenomenally brilliant character Hugh
Laurie plays has, over the past eight years, not only brought to question a lot of controversial topics within the practice of medicine, but also many about the society
we live in. This is what made House so good. Laurie’s character made it clear
that sometimes morality has to be pushed aside when the stakes are high. The show itself had its ups and downs over the past eight years and sometimes the plot twists
became a bit too much, however, what House really did deliver was a group of great and compelling characters, held
together by a crazy but brilliant protagonist.
The decision to end the show was made by its producers at Fox in early February.
With only a few episodes left to go, House fans will watch intently as the
series begins its journey to what should, hopefully, be a fitting conclusion. House
is truly original, one of the best shows out there. Even when it’s over, I’ll always
remember Dr. House and his famous words of wisdom: “Everybody lies.”

From the producers and writers of the cult-classic, Doctor Who, is yet another big hit on the small screen, Sherlock. This series follows the life of the one and only consulting detective and his army doctor, as originally written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, except with a bit of a twist: it’s set in the 21st century.
Relaunching an old, popular series such as Sherlock Holmes in modern-day London was not an easy task, but producers and writers Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss seem to pull it off with ease. The show launched in 2010 with a series of three episodes, each 90 minutes in length, airing weekly on BBC1.
After the success of the first series, the BBC commissioned a second series of three more 90-minute long episodes. In this series, the writers wanted each episode to showcase Sherlock Holmes in a different situation that would bring out the human side of his almost robotic personality.
Despite the confusion and the long wait of about one and a half years between series one and two, the fans of the show, known as Sherlockians, show no limits to their dedication. After the series finale and a post on Dr. John Watson’s character blog, the fans created a campaign that revolves around the term “I Believe in Sherlock Holmes,” which is explained by the series two finale. This campaign involved spreading the word to people all around the globe, whether they were fans of the show or not, by putting up flyers, placing random bookmarks, and even writing the term on sidewalks or in the sand.
The show is a pleasure to watch from episode one because of its truly timeless nature and it doesn’t matter whether you’ve read all the books or never even heard of Sherlock Holmes before. As Moffat put it, “Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that’s all that matters.”
Zombie Apocalypse, the end of the world as we know it, is now. AMC’s epic show takes the world of the dead to a completely new level. Rick Grimes, an officer, wakes up in the hospital after being unconscious for weeks, to find himself in hell. Surrounded by the ever-hungry Walkers (zombies), his main goal is to find his wife, Lori and son, Carl. He gets picked up by a group of survivors who have set up a camp just outside the wrecked city. To his surprise, he discovers that Lori and Carl were saved by his partner and lifelong friend Shane Walsh. This is the first show to date to have its storyline go well beyond the start of the Zombie Apocalypse. Based on the comic book “The Walking Dead” by Robert Kirkman, the show explores the humanity of those who’ve managed to survive thus far. Have they remained human and civil, or are they slowly turning into the Living Dead themselves?

What is your earliest memory of composing and playing music?I remember composing at the piano after my first couple of lessons, when I
was around nine years old. I can’t remember the piece, unfortunately, but I do remember the great feeling of being able to express myself through music.
What, or who, influenced you and your music the most? My music is influenced by a memory or life experience. I’ve always been very
imaginative, so sometimes I’ll think up a story in my mind and compose a piece that’s a ‘soundtrack’ to that thought.
Do you think your music is influenced by your rich heritage and background? My Turkish, Persian and Indian roots, and being born and brought up in South
Africa, have definitely played a role in the ‘fusion’ genre that I’m known for. When I perform adapted pieces, I’ll mix an Arab, Bollywood and western contemporary
track, for example from ‘Coldplay’, together. When composing original music, it always has an eastern, oriental touch.
You’ve mentioned that living in the UAE lets you “feel closer to your roots”; how does that affect your art?
Being in a Middle Eastern country that is so rich in culture, yet so modern and advanced definitely inspires me to create more music that has ties to my eastern
heritage; with a cool, modern edge.
You’ve just released the single “New Hope” from which 60 % of proceeds will be donated to Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. This is an amazing way to bring out
awareness and help kids in need. What was your drive behind it? That’s very kind, thank you. I wanted to do something to show my support for the
organization and I couldn’t afford a large donation, so this was the best way to make people aware of what the PCRF is all about and get funding to help the kids.
I wrote lyrics and sang and the words of ‘New Hope’ to encourage and inspire people to support each other. There is a lot of sadness in the world, but I want to
remind people that we can still spread the love with positivity and by being there for each other.
Are there any people in the industry that you look up to or aspire to be like?I think every person is different and unique so I wouldn’t want to be like anyone,
but I do like Katie Melua and how down-to-earth she is; Cheryl Cole too. I’ve always promised myself that I’d never change from the girl who loves the simpler
things in life; however I don’t mind getting glammed up from time to time!
What would you like to tell other young musicians who are trying to make it?Always have an honest, down-to-earth support system - friends and family that
will tell you like it is! Believe in yourself; there is only one you and that makes you incredibly special. Your dreams can come true with ambition
and positive thinking.
And finally, what is music to you? Music is a very important part of my life and features in almost everything I
do; even the most mundane thing like cooking (if anyone doesn’t dance while cooking; then they are just not normal!). Also, of all the aspects of arts and
culture, I think music is the most understood one the world over. The beat of a drum in the jungles of Africa will be understood in the outback of Australia and
vice versa. Music has the ability to unite us all.

Malika Omar is an incredibly talented musician from South Africa. With nuances of her Middle Eastern heritage, Malika has created her own style combining different influences from all over the world. A graduate of the Associated Board of the Royal
Schools of Music, London, Trinity College of Music in London, UK and UNISA, Malika has recently released a single “New Hope”, through which she hopes to help Palestine
Children’s Relief Fund by donating 60% of the proceeds. We caught up with this inspiring soul to get to know her more and see what drives her to do all this.

Basketball is an extremely popular indoor sport around the world. It
is played with five players on each team. In the UAE, there are more
provisions being set-up, providing 13-18 year olds space to play
the sport.
one8one went to the BAD Academy to interview the players
there, see what their love for the sport was and who their
basketball role models were.
SHURIANKAI’ve been playing basketball for the past two years. I used to play with my dad when I was young and continued throughout school. I play other sports like netball and volleyball but basketball is my favourite.

best friends is here. I’ve been here for four months now and enjoy improving my basketball skills. Also, I play for the
school team.
My basketball role model is Derrick Rose as he’s an amazing shooter. Some people
say he never misses and I agree.
On a superficial level, Atte Miettinen is an unassuming man, sitting in Starbucks dressed in clothes that didn’t exactly
differentiate him from the plethora of weekend shoppers and tourists; however, what distinguishes him from the rest isn’t
the logo on his jeans or the cards in his wallet, but what he has accomplished and perhaps more importantly, where he is going.

TRISTENI love playing Point Guard and setting up plays, this makes me feel so good. My basketball role model is Jerry Millen.
I play at school and we have a really good team; I have also played for the National team of Thailand. It was a great achievement and I love basketball.

The View of a Falcon

The light Arabian breeze carried me away filling me with the prosperity, wisdom and
culture of the Nation and every time, it was a sensation.
I have lived many years and shed many tears
for, and with, this country.
I have seen the beginning, the present and travelled in time
through the memory and hearts of the natives,
and under the gleaming sun that makes them shine.
At the start, when I was born, there was
nothing except Nature around me. The dunes that looked like waves in a
crashing sea. The mountains that bordered the desert
announced a new sight, that always gave me a pleasant delight.
The animals, either camels or small mammals,
were able to roam around, everything lived and grew healthy on
the ground.
As the years have passed from that last glance
I will give it another chance. I flew down from my nest,
back from the century long rest. The dunes were still there
but there were little huts everywhere it seemed at rest with nature.
But I sensed a shift because the wind had a new, different drift.
So instead of going back to rest I decided to do, what I can do best. Watching over the land And carrying the sand In between my never aging feathers Who were never tamed by leathers. The longer I stayed the more I swayed between anger, happiness, sometimes even emptiness. I saw the hut expand into a house and a house, later on, looked like a mouse next to the sky scrapers that stood in my way, being mighty and fat. The nature that I once knew seemed to have vanished, but the prosperity, wisdom and culture were not banished. As my thoughts drifted to the past, there was something at last that caught my eye. It was a wonderfully grown tree high up in the sky, a good position to pry and with a beautiful view of the sea.

You didn’t mention your age or how long you have been smoking. I want to start by saying how wonderful it is that you want to quit smoking but I wonder if you want to quit because you no longer WANT to smoke, or that you want to quit because you are afraid that your parents may find out. The reasons for quitting are ultimately the most important ally you will have on your long journey of detaching yourself from the addiction. As with any form of addiction, there is a benefit to doing it. Why did you start smoking? Why do you still smoke? Do you feel ‘cool’ and ‘accepted’ by your peers because they smoke too? I suggest that you make a list of all of the reasons that you smoke. Please exhaust yourself with this list. Next, make a list of all the reasons why you want to stop smoking. Keep asking yourself the ‘what else’ question until you are completely exhausted. Continue by visualising what you would look like, feel like, sound like and smell like if you were a non-smoker. Do you like the new you image? Does it look appealing? Keep going and ask yourself what you are going to lose when you stop smoking? Will you lose a connection to friends? An image? A support system when things get challenging? Finally, look at all the information that you have come up with and reflect. If you still WANT to quit then get support. I always recommend that youth reach out to their parents. Most of the time, they are more understanding than you think they will be. I am not omitting that they may get upset with you, but the likelihood of not wanting to help you is slim to none! If you really cannot get their support than I suggest that you find a supportive friend that can help you through this journey. In my experience with clients, coaching is a very effective method for changing unpleasant habits. Good luck and stay healthy!

Letters to a Coach
Q. My parents are sending me off to boarding school and I don’t want to go. I know they want what’s best for me but I really don’t want to go. I’m happy here with my friends and don’t want to go live alone away from my parents and my friends. How can I convince them to let me stay?
This is a tough scenario that so many expat families are experiencing. I strongly suggest that you sit down with your parents and clearly discuss how you are feeling. Let them understand your view. Let them walk in your shoes and feel what you are feeling. Explain how living away from them and your life here is going to make you feel. Once you are done, give them a chance to discuss their points of view. A large number of parents who send their children off to boarding school have also been through a boarding school system themselves. Listen to the experiences that they had. They have wisdom about moving to a boarding school that you are not able to offer just yet. Let them share their wisdom with you knowing that you will listen intently and without judgment or anger. Once both of you have shared, take some time to reflect on what they have told you and on what you have told them. Resume the conversation only after you have carefully reflected. During this time, you may have changed your mind about boarding school. Otherwise, maybe they have. If there is no change in decisions then you must prepare yourself for the changes approaching you.
Firstly, it is very normal and very expected that you will feel lost, alone and confused in your new school and new residence. There will be numerous changes in your way of living and of course you will be expected to connect with a new group of friends and room-mates. Expect that your emotions will be all over the place at the start but when you begin to settle in your new environment, you will also begin to feel more comfortable. Ensure that you and your parents are closely communicating throughout the entire process of change. In my experience, children who feel supported by their parents are more likely to overcome difficult changes quickly than are children who feel unsupported by their parents.
Remember to give yourself a chance to express your feelings to your parents. I am sure that they are feeling equally sad and unhappy with having you live so far away from them as well. Parents are always looking to do what is best for their children; your parents are no different. Good luck and please know that I am an email away should you need any more support.
Boarding school
Can’t sleepI am pleased to read that you have already seen a medical practitioner. Having done that, we can now focus on ways to help you. For starters, I suggest that you start a journal. Note down the food you eat, the physical activity that you do and the thoughts that you hold throughout the day and evening. Set an alarm on your phone that reminds you to track in your journal. Do this for at least 14 days. Look for patterns. Are you eating highly stimulating foods right before bed time? Are you watching highly stimulating programs before you sleep? Look around the room that you sleep in; is it disruptive to your sleep? Do you have a television in the room? There are many factors that add to our sleep problems and television is a big one. Are you worried about something? Most people try to hide from their worries. In fact, a phenomenal percentage of the population believe that we must always be positive. That is ridiculous. Spend a short amount of time, no longer than 15 minutes a day, acknowledging your worries. Create a list of them; get them out into the open. Notice them and then create tangible actions that will help you to overcome them. Next, try spending some time meditating. Being silent for short periods of time during the day is proven to create a stillness and calmness in people. Try to do this right before you sleep. You may also find that you nod off to sleep while doing it.
If none of these suggestions prove effective, I suggest that you move on and seek the support from a sleep specialist to diagnose how to overcome your insomnia. Good luck and I wish you hours of deep sleep.
Q. I have trouble sleeping. I go to university and get only 2-4 hours of sleep every day. I’m not tired and fully awake in the day time but when I try to sleep I can’t. I’ve been to a doctor but she said there was nothing physically wrong with me. Is it psychological?
