What or Who is Artangel?

Page 3: Artangel

For the past 20 odd years Artangel has been fundraiser, administrator and Guardian to some of Britains and the worlds most radical artists.

• Though it was founded in 1985 by Roger Took it was not until Micheal Morris and James Lingwood assumed joint directorship in 1991 that things really began to take off….

Funding

• In 1992 they met their dream sponsor, Beck’s the brewer, who signed a 3 year deal.

• Arts council became more supportive with annual grants increased significantly from 15k to 150k in 1999.

• “Company of angels”- a group of over 100 benefactors who each contribute a couple of hundred pounds annually.

• Crucially the funding was not tied to the realisation of specific projects.
