Peter Mintchev “ICEBERG”. painting

Curator: Dora Doncheva

“…My project „Iceberg” is an ongoing

series of paintings in which each is a

portrait of an invented iceberg. This

painting concept allows me to experi-

ment with abstract painting within the

comfort of a representational space,

but unlike the nineteenth century ex-

amples of iceberg imagery, my paint-

ings are an attempt to directly drama-

tize the tensions between the realistic

and imaginary aspects of representa-

tion”. Peter Mintchev /detail from exhi-

bition concept/

ANDRIS VĪTOLIŅŠ

“Plastic vitamins”

8.09.2011. – 21.10.2011.

“Unfinished buildings disintegrate fan-

tastically quickly. They are elegantly

swallowed by trees and grass in just

six months. Unemployed looters pilfer

everything useful, dig up cables and

dismantle buildings…”

From 8 September Andris Vītoliņš’

(1975) latest one-man show “Plastic

vitamins” will be on display at Galerija

Alma. These are 15 new works created

for the exhibition over a two year pe-

riod in which the artist conceptually

and visually plays with the industrial

paradoxes and found construction

“wonders” he’s spotted in his city

– pompously begun, but now aban-

doned utopian objects and semi-built

multi-storey buildings. Kaleidoscopi-

cally dynamic, laconic, and appealing-

ly luminous acryl and oil paints form

images of tempo, fragmentation and

transience.

Reducing painting to primary, ba-

sic categories allows us both to look

at this medium at a proper distance,

and – at the same time – to grasp its

current condition on actual examples

forming a particular „representative

sample”. The Landscape, Portrait, Still

Life exhibition is, most of all, a pretext;

a pretext to take a look at contempo-

rary Polish painting on the basis of the

works of three artists considered to be

Page 6: ArtGuideEast Magazine

6 the most interesting in their genera-

tions; a pretext to confront three dif-

ferent standpoints, three reflections

regarding painting; finally, it is a pre-

text to trace the creative development

of three artists from the „fatigued with

reality” group of young Polish surreal-

ists who debuted several years ago.

The point of departure for such a situ-

ation was a simple task: each artist

was to create three works relating to

the categories presented in the title.

The authors were to vary the formats

of works, which were generally de-

fined as „small”, „medium” and „large”.

The choice of the format was made by

the artists themselves.

DISTANCES - AERIAL SPACES BE-

TWEEN MENTAL OCEANS

Stefania Batoeva, Tomasz Ciecier-

ski, Tadeusz Rolke, Simone Rueß,

Włodzimierz J. Zakrzewski, Julia

Zborowska

Opening: 23 September 2011, 7 p.m.

24 September – 12 November 2011

Reality constructed by the individual

gaze is a function of desire and dis-

tance. The exhibition Distances - Aer-

ial Spaces Between Mental Oceans

explores the notion of distance used

in different contexts: not only physical

space, as experienced by the body, or

architectural space. Space in and be-

tween architecture breathes its own

air, builds channels for human traffic,

organises communication networks,

and at some places cuts off the wind.

Like a magnet, distance, a movement

of attraction and repulsion, verifies

our conceptions of what is close or

far away, gives perspective, and can

shake us into new ways of seeing what

previously seemed but an ordinary in-

animate object.

LOKAL_30, open to the public since

2005 in a small flat with a unique,

homely atmosphere steeped in histo-

ry in a pre-war tenement house. Since

then lokal_30 has been a place for

shows, panels, meetings, residencies,

performances and performatives, in-

cluding presentations in external insti-

tutions. LOKAL_30 is promoting very

young artists and the older generation

– those already famous but still seek-

ing to consolidate their status in inter-

national art scene.

LOKAL_30 is still young space that

emerged in international scene over

the recent years on international art

fairs. As one of the most dynamic and

ambitious one LOKAL_30 promotes

Polish art in a comprehensive way,

overcoming limitations of the Polish

art market. Planning to establish inter-

national character of this independent

art-space in Warszawa, lokal_30

during last years started to collaborate

and represent the international artists.

From September 2009 to October

2010 LOKAL_30 has run its second

temporary art space in London

lokal_30_warszawa_london_project,

located in the East End.

Calina Gallery, founded in February

2007 in the city centre of Timișoara,

promotes contemporary Romanian

art by focusing primarily on the works

of young artists. The gallery’s goals

are cultural, artistic and educational

aiming to promote, know and study

the cultural values manifesting in the

field of arts, the mediation among

different forms of artistic expression

– the fine arts, music and literature.

Current Exhibition:

Artist: Róbert Köteles

Title of the exhibition : Forever

Period: 19 september – 27 october 2011

Curated by Ileana Pintilie

Since his maiden period, more than

a decade ago, Robert Koteles has

worked on abstract compositions by

using a distinctive graphic sign and a

certain background composed of a

structure made of line networks. In his

case these networks become some

continuous visual supports, optical

vibrations perpetuating a pressuring

condition. ( Ileana Pintilie)

Open Gallery favours exhibitions with

existential resonances. It seeks to in-

volve visitors in its projects. It suc-

cesfully maintains the fine balance

needed to accommodate artists of

international repute with progressive

younger artists taking their first steps

on this journey.

A Close Look Changes the Object

13 September – 16 October 2011

It sometimes happens that we start to

see the same object today differently

from how we saw it yesterday. Does it

actually mean that the object depends

on how we look at it? Does it change

on its own or under the hypnotic in-

fluence of our penetrating look? That

sort of questions will necessarily be

posed by the viewers of the new

group project at the Open Gallery.

Roza Azora Gallery – is one of the old-

est private galleries in Moscow. It was

established 20 years ago and it was

the first gallery that started to collect

objects of the soviet culture: com-

modes, lamps, statuettes, briefcases,

toys, hats, glasses and many other

things that personified the Soviet life

with its communal flats and general

equality. Behind prescription of years

the negative was forgotten and the

rest was romanticized. During the

years artists of the most various styles

and directions were exhibited in the

gallery.

The exhibition Interventions is the first

presentation of works of Girolamo

Marri and Miho Sato in Slovakia. Works

of Girolamo Marri /1980, Rome/ stem

from the interest in relationship be-

tween the old and upcoming eco-

nomic systems of Eastern countries

/countries of the former socialist bloc

or Asian countries/ in a new globalised

scenario. He investigates cultural and

social disharmonies, collisions be-

tween the “East” and “West”. Works

of a Japanese painter living in London

Miho Sato feature experiences of an

artist living in the completely different

cultural environment into which com-

munication code he/she will never en-

tirely penetrate. Her Japanese origin

is an important inspirational source

for her work in which she combines

the stiffness and cunningness of the

Western world with the Eastern spir-

ituality and tranquility.

Opening hours:Monday – Friday: 10 am – 6 pm

Saturday: 9 am – 5 pm

T-Gallery’s main goal is to create a

platform for presenting the latest ten-

dencies in Slovak and international

graphic art and drawing. This platform

seeks to refresh the interest of the

youngest generation in the medium of

graphic art and restore the continuity

of the graphic tradition in Slovakia.

Being one of the first galleries of this

type in Slovakia, it has the ambition

to provide space to young artists for

showing their work and is willingly un-

dertaking the risk of exhibiting these

new names. It undertakes this risk with

the intention to shed light on the rich

spectrum of Slovak, as well as interna-

tional graphic and drawing production.

T-Gallery plays the role of an epicent-

er of the latest graphic and drawing

tendencies, nevertheless, it does not

forget the marketable potential of

artworks and remains a commercial

gallery.
