Biography
I began my artistic career doing pen and ink renderings of historical architecture. I began painting in 1980, first in gouache, thenin acrylics. Artists whose work I admire and draw inspiration from include Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler, Richard Estes andVermeer. I am most interested in depicting what Alan Watts called the mystery of the ordinary; the workaday world we live inwithout seeing until we are forced to focus upon it, as in a painting.
Nearly all my paintings are based on photographs I have taken, primarily of Southern California scenes, over the years. Thoughit was never my intention to depict nostalgic scenes, many of the images I have painted have disappeared or been radicallyaltered in the ever-changing landscape that is Southern California. Thus nostalgia is thrust upon the works. But the distinctivelight remains, which is what I attempt to capture in my painting. That, and the built environment that we humans inhabit, wherenature manifests itself only in weeds and palms emerging from cracks in the hardscape, and the smooth blue sky.
Phyllis Lutjeans, Museum Educator and former curator, has said of my work: “Although Michael Ward may be called a neo-realist painter his work can ultimately be described as abstract realism. The picture image is photographically realistic, but withinthe context of the painting his compositions are complex and almost abstract. Deciphering the work section by section one seeshow a multitiude of individual complete compositions are put together to form the entire work. For me the viewer is confronted bya realistic image that puzzles us and clearly tells the story simultaneously.”
As a painter, I am self-taught. In my day job, I work as an Art Director and Graphic Designer.

Karen HilliardLas Vegas, NVhttp://www.khilliardart.com
My name is Karen Hilliard. I grew up outside of San Francisco, CA, in a beach town. I fell in love with art in high school andended up taking my passion to San Francisco State University to receive my BA in Painting and Drawing. I love the fact thatI can take a sketchbook with me wherever I travel and then bring home drawings that I will always cherish. Growing up bythe ocean drew my imagination to exploring the world. Meeting new people and being faced with new challenges andenvironments gives me great motivation. I currently live in the beautiful state of Nevada where I go hiking, climbing, takephotos, and enjoy nature.
As far asmywatercolor process goes, I love thismedium for theway I can get such fine details and theway they bleed togetheron the paper. I love the control I have with watercolor and using tiny brushes. I enjoy creating each piece and spend a lot oftime on each painting, so I choose to paint from photographs or my own sketches. My goal as an artist is to give the viewera different perspective of nature. I focus on rocks and trees as a whole to create an image in my larger works. I emphasizethe intricacy of the lines and texture in my smaller works to show the beauty of simplicity. My love for the outdoors is whereall my passion comes from. Please check out mywebsite at www.khilliardart.com to viewmy portfolio. Thank you for yourinterest.
I hope everyone enjoys my artwork as much as I enjoy creating it!

APM: First off I would like to congratulate you and your painting Mi Salon as being chosen by our juror as the Best in Show of our 2012Landscapes Art Exhibition. Itʼs a beautiful work of art and the other day I was leaving my gallery in the Santora Arts Building in Santa Anaand I walked right past this shop. I was thinking, this place really looks familiar. What compelled you to paint the Mi Salon?MW: I, too, discovered Mi Salon while wandering around the Arts District in Santa Ana. It was early morning, and while waiting for galleriesto open I took the shot. The girl was another photo taken on the same street further up the block. So even though she was not actually infront of the salon, shewas headed thatway, and the guy insidewould have surely checked her out, as hewas checking out the strange gringotaking pictures.
APM: I read in your bio that you are a selftaught artist. What made youwant to becomean artist andwhat drives or inspires you as anartist?
MW: I started painting primarily to see if Icoulddo it, andbecause I hadsomephotos Iʼdtaken that I thought would make goodpaintings. Those first efforts cameoutwell, soI kept going.Myearly inspirationwas theworkof Charles Sheeler, Richard Estes and othersthat work from photographs. For me theprocess is rewarding—Iʼm alwaysdiscovering elements in the source imagesthat I didnʼt see when the photograph wastaken (like the guy inside Mi Salon). Itʼs areminder that we only see the surface ofthings in our day-to-day experience. Thereare always deeper truths to be found, andpainting helps me discover them.

Bonito Court (2012) - Acrylic on Canvas, 14" x 18"
APM: As an artist myself Iam always curious to knowanother artists process ofcreating. Can you explainyour process?
MW: The paintings alwaysstart with photos, though Idonʼt always take photoswith the intention of makingpaintings from them. Thisapplies especially to photos(slides) I took back in the1970s and 80s, before Ibegan painting. Iʼm stilldiscovering the paintings insome of those.
In the old days I wouldproject slides onto canvas, but these days thecompositions are refined onthe computer, where I crop, and add or subtractelements, and maybetweak the colors. I make areference print at full size, and use that as a guide.
APM: What is next for youand your art? Do you haveany big exhibitions comingup and if people would liketo find your art, how wouldthey do this?
MW: My work is showing on an ongoing basis at Tirage Art in Pasadena ( www.tirageart.com ). And forthe month of January, I will have a show at StudioGallery in Irvine ( www.studiogallery.net ). Iʼm havingan opening on January 19, from 12 to 4 pm. The gallery is open by appointment at other times.
People can follow my work on my blog, http://tmichaelwardartist.blogspot.com/, and my website,www.tmichaelward.com. Iʼmsure Iʼll have a fewpieces in theOCFair again this year, andmay have somehigher-profile exhibitions as well—check the blog.
Iʼve also experimented with some less-representational techniques, inspired by Richard DiebenkornʼsOcean Park series. Iʼve stolen his idea of painting on cigar boxes. Itʼs a lot of fun!
