LAST EXHIBITION

Sue de Beers Zweikanalvideo „The Ghosts“ lehnt sich formal an italienische „Giallo“-

Filme an. Erzählt wird die Geschichte einer ok-kulten Hypnotiseurin, gespielt von der Künstler-in und Musikerin Jutta Koether. Diese ist in der Lage, in die Tiefen des menschlichen Unterbe-wusstseins vorzudringen und die dort verbor-genen „Geister“ zu evozieren. Sie beschwört verloren gegangene Zeitspannen aus den Erinnerungen ihrer Klienten herauf und lässt sie die nicht mehr vorhandenen Momente er-neut erleben.

Der männliche Protagonist des Films, ein Wall Street Manager, wird von dem Musiker Jon Spencer (The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion) dargestellt. Er kehrt, süchtig nach den Sit-zungen, immer wieder zu der Hypnotiseurin zurück. Doch die ursprüngliche, sublime Na-tur seiner Phantasie von einer mysteriösen, schönen Frau lässt sich nicht wiederherstellen und entwickelt ein unkontrollierbares Eigenle-ben.

Die Videoinstallation, gezeigt in heimeliger At-mosphäre mit Teppich und Sitzkissen, wird um zwei skulpturale Arbeiten ergänzt: Ein modifi-ziertes Praxinoskop, reflektiert auf einer zwöl-feckigen zentralen Säule ein antarktisches Gletscherpanorama. Diese Landschaft wird auch von der Hypnotiseurin im Film heraufbe-schworen und scheint sich aus eigener Kraft zu bewegen und zwischen Nähe und Distanz zu oszillieren. Eine unbetitelte Wandschirm-Instal-lation blockt und filtert das Licht im Raum und reproduziert auf diese Weise die Lichteffekte aus de Beers bildintensiven Filmen in skulptur-aler Form.

Sue de Beer, geboren 1973, war in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen vertreten, so un-ter anderem im New Museum, dem Whitney Museum of American Art und dem Museum of Modern Art in New York, der Deste Founda-tion in Athen, dem ZKM Karlsruhe und der Kun-sthalle Schirn, Frankfurt. Die Kunst-Werke Berlin haben 2005 die Einzelausstellung “Hans und Grete“ gezeigt. Werke von de Beer befinden sich u. a. in den Sammlungen des MoMA, des Whitney Museum of American Art, dem New Museum und des Brooklyn Museum. Sue de Beer lebt und arbeitet in New York.

The Ghosts is a two-channel video, taking the form of an Italian “giallo” film. It tells the

story of a hypnotist who retrieves lost lengths of time from peoples’ memories and returns them to the patient as if they are experienc-ing those moments anew. The hypnotist, played by the artist Jutta Koether, has devel-oped a method that allows her to dive into the deepest parts of the human mind and find the ghosts hidden there.

The film’s main male character is a money manager on Wall Street, played by musician Jon Spencer. He has become addicted to the hypno-therapy and dreams of a beauti-ful elusive woman – but somehow this fantasy becomes uncontrollable. He keeps going back to the hypnotist, trying to have this vi-sion stay, and to retain the fantasy’s sublime nature, but often in vain.

The video installation, presented in a com-fortable viewing environment with soft car-pet and soft seating, will be completed by two sculptural works: An altered praxino-scope with a central column in the shape of a dodecagon reflects the panoramic landscape of a glacier in Antarctica also in-voked by the hypnotist in the film. The land-scape telescopes time and vision, moving the viewer closer and farther away as they move around the object. An untitled screen installation blocks and filters light, hereby re-producing the lighting effects from de Beer’s visually intense films in a sculptural form.

Sue de Beer was born in 1973 and studied at Columbia University and Parsons School of Design, NY. She exhibited in numerous in-ternational institutions and museums includ-ing the New Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the ZKM Karlsruhe and the Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt. Kunst Werke Berlin showed he solo exhibition “Hans und Grete” in 2005. De Beer’s work can be found in the permanent collections of the MOMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum for and the Brooklyn Museum. De Beer lives and works in New York City.
