Allison Rasche

Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Born in Groot Zundert, the Netherlands on March 30, 1853

Attended a boarding school in Zevenbergen and King Willem II secondary school, but left his studies for good at age 15.

Committed suicide and died on on July 29, 1890.

First works consisted of dark colors, many of miners and peasants.

Persuaded to use more color, Van Gogh shortly adopted a pointillist style

His most common medium was oil paints

“Starry Night”

Vincent was self-taught in the realm of art. He would take books of artists he admired and copy their style. His style is a mesh of many styles, but he does have distinct line in his work.

My opinion: I personally am not too fond of Van Gogh’s work.

“Sunflowers”

Alexandra Nechita

Born August 27, 1985 in Romania

Labeled the “Petite Picasso,” Nechita became a famous artist by age eight.

She still continues to create art today.

“Alexandra’s Gardener

Nechita started using pen and ink at age 2, then progressed to watercolors, acrylics, and oil paints.

Today she has over 300 paintings, and has works in many galleries.

“Angel Dance”

My opinion: Nechita’s work is interesting. The abstract work always inspires creative thought when analyzing.

“Captain Nechita”

Umberto Boccioni

Born October 19, 1882 in Reggio, Calabria, Italy

Died August 17, 1916 in Verona while serving the Italian army.

“The City Rises”

As a child, Boccioni moved a lot, but settled in Padua in 1888

In 1897, he moved with his father to Sicily and received a diploma from the Technical Institute in Cantina the following year.

Boccioni became friends with artists Basilici and Severini, and later became a student of Balla, who taught him symbolism and divisionism-two chief influences in Boccioni’s work.

“States of Mind: The Farewells”

A Futurist painter and sculptor, Boccioni’s early work consisted of city life.

His work was heavily influenced by cubism as well.

My opinion: I enjoy Boccioni’s sculptures, but not his paintings.

“The Unique Forms of Continuity in Space”

Red Grooms

Born in Nashville, TN in June of 1937

Trained at New School for Social Research, Chicago Art Institute School and the Hans Hofmann School, Provincetown

“Fishing Pier”

He is a pop artist He is best known for his

brightly painted wood, metal, fabric, and other media in a wide variety of sizes and scales.

He is a painter, sculptor, printmaker, filmmaker, and showman.

His style is cheerfully satirical and cartoon-like.

“By the Shining Sea”

Red Grooms has received many awards for his art, and continues to create works today.

My opinion: Grooms’ work depicts the humorous parts of life, and I find this an enjoyable trait. I also enjoy his use of color.

“News Stand”

Fritz Scholder

Born in Breckenridge, Minnesota in 1937

Graduated from Ashland High School in Wisconsin, attended Wisconsin State University and received a MFA Degree from Tuscan

Died February 10, 2005

Scholder’s art is greatly influenced by his own Indian heritage, and by the Indian artists with whom he studied.

Abstract Expressionism inspired his use of strong images and color.

Pop Art inspired his ideas of clichés and interest in popular culture.

He is a painter, lithographer, and sculptor. “Pueblo Dog”

My opinion: I like Scholder’s work because I can see his heritage in it, and he expresses himself well through his paintings. I also enjoy his use of vibrant colors.

“Red Number 1”
