One of Europe’s most sought-after quartets, the Minguet Quartet takes its name
from Pablo Minguet, an eighteenth-century Spanish philosopher who tried in
his writings to make the fine arts accessible to the masses. The Quartet aspires
to do the same through chamber music. Performing in the most prestigious
concert halls and music festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival and the
Beethoven Festival in Bonn, the Quartet has impressed audiences with their
precision. “They possess a refinement and polish that commands attention and
effortlessly pleases” (Calgary Herald). In 2010, the ensemble received one of the
most prestigious prizes in Germany, the “Echo Klassik.” Ulrich Isfort, violin;

The St. Lawrence String Quartet continues to build its reputation for
imaginative and spontaneous music making - through an energetic commitment
to the great, established quartet literature, as well as the championing of
new works. “Here is an ensemble that projects an irresistible exuberance
in performances,” writes the Boston Globe, “and links that sense of joy with
artistry of subtlety and finesse.” Among the world-class chamber ensembles of

SAN DIEGOdebut
Realism merges with symbolic movement when seven dancers conjure
agrarian cycles and rural rituals in The Mist. Consisting of seven scenes,
this visually arresting piece depicts an emotional story about the simple
life of rice farmers. A rustic spectacle of bamboo bridges, spiral incense,
and conical hats, will fill the stage and embody all the charms and colors
of southern Vietnam. “Masterpieces are rarely simply explicable… instead,
they’re the product of rich imagination, and The Mist is in every way
undeniably that” (The Saigon Times). In their San Diego debut, Arabesque
will awaken all of the senses of ArtPower! dance lovers, drawing them
closer to the traditional cultural beauty in rural areas in Vietnam through
their exquisite movement.

Deemed by the New York Times as a cellist who
performs “with unforced simplicity and beauty of tone,”
Jeffrey Zeigler’s musical intuitions are highly regarded
in the classical and contemporary music worlds. With
collaborators such as Norah Jones, Hauschka, and
Laurie Anderson (to name a few), Zeigler is clearly able
to cross genres with verve and grace. As the cellist of
the internationally renowned Kronos Quartet for eight
seasons, he played an integral role in redrawing the
boundaries of the string quartet medium. Now solo,
Zeigler is tackling his artistry with the same sense of
curiosity and adventure. _______

legendary Parranderos of the Caribbean coast of Central
America to become the new voice of Parranda music. Born
in Honduras, Aurelio is one of the last generations to grow
up in the Garifuna tradition, which encompasses the African
and Caribbean Indian roots of his ancestors - shipwrecked
slaves on the island of St. Vincent who were deported to
Central America in the late eighteenth century. A breezy,
percussive mix of Caribbean, Central American, and West
African elements, the Garifuna music beautifully fuses these
distinct cultures. With his talent, vision, charisma, and searing

modernization of this vibrant musical heritage. _______

Foovies Series: Configurations of Contemporary Germany
ArtPower! presents a triptych of films co-curated by UCSD faculty member Margrit Frölich that explore contemporary Germany. As a special treat, each feature will be accompanied by a film from the renowned Oberhausen Short Film Festival!
Oma & Bella provides an intimate glimpse into the world of Regina Karolinski
(Oma) and Bella Katz, two dynamic octogenarian friends who live together
in Berlin. Survivors of the Holocaust who stayed in Germany after the war, it
is through the food they cook together that they remember their childhoods,
maintain a bond to each other, and answer questions of heritage, memory, and
identity. Directed by Oma’s granddaughter Alexa, the documentary captures
their ongoing struggle to retain the past while remaining very much engaged in
the present. “With a delicate grace and a warm sense of humor, it is one of the
most touching portraits of an elderly couple—and of Holocaust survivors—ever
seen on screen” (The Paris Review). [Alexa Karolinski, 2012, Canada, 76 min]

ODC is known worldwide for its athleticism, passion and intellectual depth.
The San Francisco-based dance company has been widely recognized for its
seamless fusion of ballet and modern techniques, all made more thrilling by
the visceral physicality of its dancers. The company of eleven world-class
artists will perform the imaginative repertory of Brenda Way, KT Nelson and
Kate Weare in an evening of dance that will take ArtPower! audiences
on an unexpected journey with each work. Of Triangulating Euclid, the
San Francisco Chronicle writes: “There’s a point-to-point logic to the piece
that seems as irresistible and inevitable as those ancient mathematical
theorems. The new work flows, twirls and regroups with utter confidence.”

For millennia, the Nile has nourished lands of human, ecological, and cultural
beauty. Connecting the polyrhythmic styles of Lake Victoria and the pointed
melodies of the Ethiopian highlands with the rich modal traditions of Egypt and
Sudan, the 4,200 mile river yields an enormous range of songs and dances,
expressing stories, emotions, and daily life. Bringing together musicians
from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea,
Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, The Nile Project
intertwines these traditions into a unified sound. Says Nile Project Co-Founder
Mina Girgis: “In these times when we’re scrambling to find new ways to live in
harmony with our environment, we find inspiration in our musical ways.”

The Wolf of Wall Street, receiving many accolades when it screened at the Berlin

This rich and eclectic sensibility is evident from the very first notes of Heroes

with bassist Marcus Miller, recorded on hip-hop tracks for Jay-Z with Kanye

Almanya is a feel-good comedy about three generations of a Turkish immigrant
family and the hilarious tale of how, and why, they ended up in Germany.
After working for forty-five years in Germany as a Turkish guest worker,
Hüseyin Yilmaz, now in his 70s, announces to his family that he has bought
a house in Turkey and wants everyone to go back with him to renovate it.
The family is not pleased with this idea, and a heated debate ensues. Told from
the perspective of Canan, a college-age girl eager to share family lore with her
6 year-old cousin Cenk, the film bounces engagingly between past and present.
The screening of Almanya is made possible by the Goethe-Institut Boston.

Brazilian singer, songwriter, and actress, Thalma de Freitas was born into
a home filled with music and creativity, as the daughter of famed maestro
Laercio de Freitas. Access to such a musical upbringing proved to be
instrumental in shaping De Frietas’ ear at an early age. As crooner in
Rio’s legendary big band Orquestra Imperial, De Freitas’ silky and sensual
voice captured the very essence of samba. In her stunning San Diego debut,
Thalma will illuminate the many spectacular and beautiful nations that Brazil
contains through her music, paying special attention to its African roots.
From the Terreiros of Candomble (birthplace of the modern samba) to the
apocalyptic jazz visions of Jose Mauro and Tim Maia’s Racional, she will be
our enchanting guide to the “other” Brazil.
