    The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) is one othemost important protected areas othePhilippines.It is located in the

    Midwest coast oPalawan,some 76 km northwest oPuerto PrincesaCity.It was designated as a national park on March 26,1971 at 3,901hectares by virtue o Proclamation No. 835. To ensure long-termviability,thearea o thePark was expanded to 22,202hectares basedon Proclamation No.212 signed on November 16,1999.

    The PPSRNP eatures a spectacular limestoneor karst landscape.It contains an 8.2km long underground river that ows directlyto thesea. Thelower halo theriver is backish and subject to theoceans tide.A subterranean river that directly ows into the sea,and theassociated tidal inuencemakes it themost unique naturalphenomenon o its typeto exist. The discovery o crystal andegg shaperock ormations, 11 minerals,and a 20 million year oldMioceneage Serenia ossil in thecave urther add to its scienticvalue.These exceptional characteristics contributed to thePuertoPrincesa Underground River being declared as oneo the New 7Wonders oNature.

    ThePPSRNP contains a ull mountain to sea ecosystems and protectsorests which areamong themost signicant in Asia.It represents 8o

    13orest ormations ound in theregion.More than 800plants specieshave been identied including 290 tress that are dominated bydipterocarp species. These orests serve as natural habitat to

    numerous species oendangered, rareand endemic wildlie. At least165birds, 30 mammals,19 reptiles and 10 amphibian species havebeen recorded in thepark. In thecoastal area,mangroves, sea grassbeds and coral reearealso ound.

    In recognation othe PPSRNPs globally signicant natural value,thePPSRNP was inscribed to the United Nations Education, Scientic

    and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO) List o World HeritageSites onDecember 4,1999.Inscription on thelist conrms the outstandinguniversal

    valueo thePark and its well integrated stateo conservation.

    Management othe PPSRNP was transerred to theCity Government oPuertoPrincesa in December 1992.It has the distinction obeing therst national park

    devolved and successully managed by a Local Government Unit.It is managed bytheCity thru a Protected Area Management Board (PAMB),multi-sector body thatprovides policy direction and other oversight unctions.It is a model or efectiveprotected area management and sustainabletourism in the Philippines.

    The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a sourceo pride,and akey element in theidentity othe peopleo Puerto Princesa in particular,and o thePhilippines as a whole.The conservation othe Park is a symbol ocommitment by

    theFilipino peoplein theglobal eforts to conserveout natural heritage.

    Wonder of Nature -The PuertoPrincesaUnderground River isone otheewsuch caveswhichthegeneralpubliccaneasilyexperienceandenjoy.It isnavigableup to4.3 km.and isreputedto bethe longestnavigableundergroundriverin theWorld.Park operatedpaddleboatstake visitorsor1 hourtourothecavetoappreciatethediferentrockormationsas wellas thethousandobatsand swietsthatinhabitthe cave.Toursare scheduled dailyexceptduringextremeweatherconditions.

    wildlife watching - The PPSRNP is inhabited by endangered,endemicandrare wildlie species.It isdesignatedan ImportantBirdArea(IBA) andEndemicBird Area(EBA) byBirdlieInternational(BI).At least165birds have beenrecordedincluding all15endemicbirdspeciesoPalawan.One muststart earlyandpreerablyequippedwith binocularstosee thebrightlycolored birdspecieso thePark.Notableare thePhilippinecockatoo, Palawanpeacock pheasant, Palawan hornbill,andBlue-nappedparrot.Othercommonlyseenwildlieare themacaques,andmonitorlizards.

    Ethnographic Museum - For display, exhibit andpresentationo historyandcultureo theBatak and Tagbanua,twoo theindigenousculturalgroupspresentinthe Park,visittheEthnographicMuseumlocatedat theParkVisitorCenter.Briengsandprintedinormationcouldalsobeavailedat thecenter.
