Arts Activities and Events for East Lothian SchoolsThe Arts Service offers a wide variety of arts activities, projects and performances for East Lothian Schoolsthat support many curricular areas and complement existing activities.

The arts have a positive impact on learning through raising self confidence and self esteem, playing a key rolein personal and social development.These activities and projects also support the aims of A Curriculum ForExcellence.

This brochure is divided into easy to reference sections to help you identify which projects best suit your agegroup and curriculum requirements.

A sweeping account of the life and times ofMohanadas K.Gandhi, who became theprime mover in India’s struggle forindependence and yet, at the sametime, he was a spiritual leader whosephilosophy was to influencemillions.

The film raises questions such as:How do you feel Gandhi’s latercareer might have beeninfluenced by his early life?What problems can arisefrom making a film aboutsomeone who died withinliving memory?

The film could be a startingpoint for pupils to explorewhat the traditional Hindubeliefs and practices areconcerning diet ormarriage, for example.

John Muir ProjectPartnership project with Arts Service, John Muir’sBirthplace, Countryside Ranger Service, John MuirAward

Curriculum theme: Citizenship, Expressive Arts, SocialStudies

Stage: P5 Cost: Free

John Muir the Dunbar born explorer,environmentalist and conservationist forms the basisfor this project enabling pupils to explore John Muir'slegacy in a creative and imaginative way.

The project starts with drama and story workshopsled by the Arts Service Drama Teachers.The projectincludes a visit to John Muir's Birthplace, an exploringactivity in the local community with the CountrysideRanger Service and a dance activity with the ArtsService Dance Artist. Schools could use this projectas the basis for pupils gaining their John Muir Award.

There will be a pre-project meeting for all teacherson Thursday 3 September at 4pm in conferencerooms 1 & 2, John Muir House Haddington. Bookingfor the Drama and Dance workshops can be madenow through using the booking form at the back ofthe brochure.

Led by a professional artist, pupils take inspiration from thework of figure drawing artists such as Keith Haring andapply knowledge of the organs and skeletal frame to thesense of movement in art.

To further support this topic, the Royal Surgeon’s Museumin Edinburgh have teamed up with the Arts Service to offera visit to the museum to see the Sports and Sports Injuriesexhibition and gain greater insight into muscles, skeletalframes and the senses. A variety of activity sheets and taskswill be provided to engage with the exhibition.

This project offers a P7 teacher and their class theopportunity to work with drama teacher Marjory Sweeneyand film professional Brian English to devise, produce andscreen a film.

Last year the pupils from P7 at Gullane primary produced thefilm The Journal that premiered at the Edinburgh Filmhouse.

This exciting project crosses many curricular areas andsupports both Curriculum for Excellence and EnterpriseEducation planning with positive and far reaching effects onthe pupils and the school community.

Primary Schools - Creative Health Cover

The Hungry GiantDRAMA

Although the villagers are small, together theyteach the Hungry Giant a lesson.Within the dramathe pupils are the experts. It is through theirknowledge that a big problem is solved.

The Arts Service supports the aims of Health Promoting Schools and Health and Well Being inclusion inAC4E, by carrying the Creative Health Cover into its third year. Last year the Creative Health Coverprogramme was requested by and delivered in all East Lothian Primary schools and impacted on over2,000 pupils.

Every school can select and request two projects from the Creative Health Cover programme free ofcharge. Additional projects can be requested but will be delivered at the appropriate cost.The majority of projects are facilitated by freelance artists, therefore it is essential that bookings are madea minimum of 4 weeks prior to start.

Based on the book Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andrea and Guy Parker-Rees, this workshop takes story telling toa physical level. Following the tale of Gerald the Giraffe, pupils will explore animal movements, emotional wellbeing,world music and narrative dance.

Pupils explore how areas of our lives, both biologically and environmentally,can become overcrowded.They then work collaboratively to choreographdance pieces that communicate an understanding of how we can balanceour state of wellbeing.This project addresses emotional health(overcrowding our heads with worry), physical health (overcrowding ourstomachs and systems with toxins), and environmental health (overcrowdingour playgrounds with litter).

Pupils will work with their teacher to identify and research a topic relatingto Health and Wellbeing, such as the environment, healthy eating or positiverelationships.Then working collaboratively with a professionalmusician/songwriter the class will create a new song or piece ofprogramme music to interpret and express their findings and feelings onthe matter.

The class will notate, graphic score and/or record their work and ifappropriate this can be used by the whole school for assemblies or aperformance event.
