By Kitty MerrillHe’s an artist and musician, a

composer and architect, a scientist and technician, a biologist, inventor, sculptor and producer. Is there anything Christopher Janney is not?

“Boring,” he said with a chuckle during a recent interview.

In h i s per fo rmance p iece “Heartbeat,” Janney melds disciplines and talents into a single powerful evening of entertainment. Trained as an architect and jazz musician, Janney always worked to “make architecture more like music and music more like architecture.” A recent series of sound sculptures, “Sound is An Invisible Color,” reveals that music/art/architecture mash-up.

Speaking of great painters and musicians like David Hockney and Beethoven who were said to suffer from synesthesia, a neurological disorder marked by stimulation of one sense prompting the involuntary experience of another, Janney agreed it can be less of a disorder and more of an extraordinary talent. He believes he has a mild form of synesthesia as one who can sometimes hear color and see sound and feels most at home when melding the visual and sonic.

Next Tuesday, his sound sculptures will be on view at Guild Hall in

The (Heart) Beat Of A Different DrumEast Hampton, serving as just one segment of the sensory experience in store for the audience.

The main event is a screening of What Is A Heart a film of the acclaimed “Heartbeat,” a performance exploration Janney embarked upon three decades ago when his father died of a heart attack.

“The power of the sound of the heart is so fundamental. It’s the first sound you hear; you hear it in the womb,” Janney explained. An artist-in-residence at MIT back then, Janney had access to sophisticated technology that allowed him to blend music, dance, and the high-tech. He placed a wireless heart telemetry device on a ballet dancer and scored music to accompany the sound of his or her live heartbeat.

Twyla Tharp Dance’s Sara Rudner and Mikhail Baryshnikov toured with earlier versions of “Heartbeat,” eliciting different reactions from the audience. “Listening to this person’s body becomes introspective… When we were with Mikhail, he was 50, so there were a lot of questions about mortality.”

In the latest version, and in the documentary, former New York City Ballet dancer Emily Coates provides the literal heartbeat for a piece with

“a soulful, gospel spiritual quality I really like,” Janney said.

That quality is enhanced by a collaboration with The Persuasions, known as the Kings of a cappella.

“I saw The Persuasions when I was 16,” Janney recalled. When the American Heart Association asked him to make a new version of “Heartbeat,” he decided to use “the fundamental, elemental” human voice to accompany Coates’ heart sounds.

Legendary musician/producer Frank Zappa discovered the Persuasions and Janney reported, “I talked with [Persuasions front man] Jimmy Hayes and explained what I wanted to do and he said ‘That’s about the coolest thing since we played with Frank Zappa.’” Next Tuesday’s event will open with a live performance by The Persuasions. They’ll perform a set comprised of pieces Janney wrote and traditional pieces he arranged.

Janney’s Hamptons connection is decades-deep. Back in the 70s, he lived in Bridgehampton for a bit as he developed a system for the creation of Jack Youngerman’s outdoor sculptures that are currently on view at the LongHouse in East Hampton. At the time, Janney said, artists were beginning to focus on

crafting large-scale sculptures. He provided the technical (architectural) expertise that allowed them to make their visions realities.

His own vision, following his father’s death, involved using the human heartbeat as a percussion instrument. “To a cardiologist, the heart is a very sophisticated pump, but to a musician or poet, it’s the seat of the soul. I try to explore it from those two areas . . . and in the finale they come together in a chaotic and operatic manner, because the heart is both those things.”

The screening of What Is A Heart, live performance by The Persuasions, exhibit of Janney’s sound sculptures, and a chance to meet the architect/musician/artist/ all take place Tuesday, beginning at 8 PM. Check the Guild Hall box office for ticket information.

Indy Celebrates 20 Years Of "Indy Snaps" With An Afternoon TeaBy Jessica Mackin

The Independent has been to its fair share of parties over the past 20 years. We've put together a photo exhibit which documents some of the most prominent faces over the years at a variety of Hampton affairs.

The exhibit, which features photography by Jenna Mackin, James J. Mackin, Jan Mackin, Ben Sneed, Peggy Stankevich and myself, will feature shots that we've taken since 1993 when our first issue was published. Take a trip down memory lane while viewing photos of Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel attending the Mens Lives premier at Bay Street Theatre in 1993 or James Franco in 2010 attending the Hamptons International Film Festival. See Peter Jennings give bunny ears in 1996 or Bruce and Kris Jenner pre-"Keeping Up With The Kardashians" in 2001. We will exhibit over 20 photos we believe represent the past two decades of Hampton events. If it was worth shooting, Indy was there.

The reception wil l not only celebrate 20 years of photos, but will also feature an afternoon tea party hosted by Hampton Daze Magazine and Wizard Of Spa. Guests will enjoy tea by Chambre De Sucre, specialty cocktails, wine, hors d'oeuvres, cupcakes, gift bags, a red carpet and more.

A 50/50 raffle will take place to support Walk To Defeat ALS, the ALS Association's annual walk to fight Lou Gehrig's Disease. Funds raised will support "Team Lenz," which is walking in honor of family member John Lenz who passed away in 2012 after a six year battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The event takes place Saturday from 3 to 6 PM at the Independent's Office in the Red Horse Plaza (Suite 16) in East Hampton. The first 75 guests to RSVP will receive a complimentary gift bag with special gifts from Me!Bath, Chambre De Sucre and more. [email protected].

The fifth annual Westhampton Festival of the Arts will take place for two days beginning August 31 on the Great Lawn on Main Street in Westhampton Beach. It is perennially ranked among the top shows of its kind in the country. Bill Kinney of Paragon Art, the Show Director, discusses the event with The Independent.

I n d y : How l o ng ha s t h e Westhampton Festival of the Arts been in existence?

Bill: This will be our fifth year for the Westhampton Festival of the Arts. We began in 2009, survived two tropical storms and continue to grow the event each year. This is one of the jewels in the Paragon show schedule.

Indy: Tell us something about the show.

Bill: First, this is a national show. The show’s reputation draws artists from around the country and internationally. We also have many New York and Long Island artists – including myself and my seascape photography. We have become the largest art festival on Long Island, though in relationship to other events nationally, we are considered a "boutique" show with about 120 artists exhibiting in the event. The show has consistently ranked in the Top 100 fine art festivals nationwide and entering 2013 we were ranked

Evening Storm, Bill Kinney, Stripers Blue and Gold (Jim Roberts), Underwater Koi by Bryan Young.

Westhampton Festival of the Arts

in the Top 50.I n d y : W h a t m a k e s t h e

Westhampton Festival of the Arts different from other Long Island art events?

Bill: What makes us different is the quality of the artists and the artwork. This then affects the "quality" of our attendees, drawing patrons to Westhampton Beach from Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York City and both Nassau and Suffolk counties – all to purchase art.

Indy: What is your role in the event, as the Show Director?

Bil l: Chief cook and bott le washer! Though in all seriousness, we have three primary objectives: the success of our artists, public safety, and the event being beneficial t o t he Wes thamp ton Beach community. We want our artists to succeed in pursuit of their passion and creativity. We want everyone, artists and patrons alike, to come and leave without incident. And Paragon is a strong advocate for the business communities where we hold our events. It is our hope that those who come to the event shop and eat locally and bring an influx of money to the local economy.

Indy: Who are some of the artists that will be there?

Bill: We will have spectacular work again this year. For example in our sculpture category, joining us for

the first time is Frederick Prescott from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Returning will be our good friend Charles Strain from Missouri and the exquisite glass sculptor Thomas Long from Florida. In our jewelry category are phenomenal works by Alexis Barbeau from Florida and David Nugent from New Hampshire. We also are joined by digital artist Edward Loedding of Connecticut and gyotaku fish print artist James Roberts from Florida. This is but a small sampling of the extraordinary art work patrons will have the opportunity to see and select from.

Indy: What do you hope those who come to the event leave with?

Bill: My fundamental hope is that they leave with art. Since 2008 we have lost over 40 percent of our contemporary artists and they are an invaluable natural resource. So it is our hope that they come, enjoy the high quality of art, and purchase something not only to enrich their lives with but also to help preserve these artisans as part of our cultural heritage.

Indy: How can people get a hold of you if they want more information?

Bill: Email me or call or check out our website: [email protected], www.paragonartevents.com, 631-421-1590.

You’re Next (R ) You think you’ve seen every conceivable twist and turn imaginable in your standard home invasion movie? Think again – this suspense/action/horror flick will rock your world. It’s what passes for a date movie nowadays – sit up in the last row of the balcony and enjoy.

New To Theaters

Lee Daniels’ The Butler (PG-13) As was the case with Precious, Daniels’ unabashedly directs with one eye on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts. In other words, he’s pandering for Oscar nominations, and it hurts his

work. Fortunately, Forest Whitaker rescues some heavy-handed direction with an extraordinary performance that somehow cuts through the self-righteousness that runs rampant through this film. If you don’t know by now, it’s about a White House butler who served eight American presidents. The script is short on historical facts and long on pap but the cast is superb, even Robin Williams playing Ike. Watch for Jane Fonda channeling Nancy Reagan. Yes, there will be Oscar nominations – this kind of Hollywood liberal schlockfest always manages to find an all-too winning champion.

New On DVD

Trouble With The Curve Clint Eastwood turns in a winning little gem, directing himself as an aging baseball scout with bad vision. Amy Adams is nothing short of adorable as his daughter, and Justin Timberlake plays slightly nerdy former player turned scout with aplomb. As is usually the case with Eastwood, the supporting cast is made up of some of the best character actors in the business, including Ed Lauter (The Longest Yard) and Chelcie Ross. John Goodman co-stars. Add a star if you like baseball.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Magical week ahead, as long as you don’t get too attached to one certain plan. Allow the changes around you to be the deciding factor in a destination, rather than having a fixed outcome in mind. Changes and trusting the magic serve you well this week.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Time to allow yourself to be nurtured. Take it upon yourself to be the one who does the nurturing if no one else shows up. Trust your feelings over your rational mind and surrender to the part of you that knows right now is the best time to do nothing.

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) It really is not about the old rules and the old ways of doing things. Even if they have worked in the past, right now there is an opportunity for you to create rules based solely on what works for you and what does not. Trust this process.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Home is the place to be. Touch your stuff, look around you and remember who you are. Feel and know that the power is inside of you and that you don’t have to control everything. You just have to show up and meet it. The power is in you.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Like Cancer, you are having a very powerful time right now. Do not be afraid of taking on additional responsibility because you can, indeed, handle it. Your imagining of it is worse than the actual experience will be. Trust how powerful you are. If you have to, fake it until it kicks in for real.

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Allow those around you to help you if you need it. And don’t be afraid of needing the help in the first place.

We can’t do it alone, that is why there are so many of us here on the planet. Ask for help because others will not assume you need it and it’s a way for you to feel the love others have for you.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Time to bring things together. The time of analyzing and breaking things down is over and the task becomes figuring out how it all fits together. Do something creative. You may find a long sought after answer during a creative project when you mind is turned elsewhere.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Keep your head in a good place. Pay special attention to your thoughts and see when they go into the ditch and have you thinking worse case scenarios. Know your feelings are connected to your mind. Don’t allow it to wander to the icky places.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) You are strong and you will survive all that is going on. Fear not. Take time for yourself and know that the changes that are happening are part of a bigger plan and you will simply need to show up. So take some alone time and show up renewed.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) No need to defend yourself or explain yourself to anyone. If you catch yourself justifying your choices, know that you have lost your mind and take a different tact. You can stand undefended and allow yourself to be vulnerable because you are safe at such a deeper level.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Hang out with an Aries and enjoy the magic that is all around you. Keep talking and expressing yourself and know that there is so much energy and will be so many options that you

Today’s Birthday: Wilt Chamberlain, 1936

Wilt Chamberlain was so much more than an extremely tall basketball player – there is some sentiment he may have been one of the most gifted athletes of all time.

Off the court, Chamberlain was funny, urbane, and one of the world’s most fabled Casanovas.

Chamberlain, raised in Philadelphia, was by all accounts a frail and sickly boy. In fact, he didn’t even play basketball at first, concentrating on track and field in high school. He was, virtually, a one-man Olympic team – excelling in sprinting, broad jumping, high jumping and shotput; he had college scholarship offers to play any sport he desired.

As Chamberlain grew, it became apparent his future was in basketball. His athleticism allowed him to quickly master the game, and he became a legend even before graduating from Overbrook High School, scoring 242 points over a three game stretch, a national record.

Kansas University became an immediate national powerhouse when he played there, and Chamberlain was the best player in the country.

He continued to excel in track and field in college. He ran the 100-yard dash in 10.9 seconds, shotputted 56 feet, triple jumped more than 50 feet, and won the high jump in the Big Eight track and field championships three straight years.

On the basketball court, Chamberlain became more and more frustrated as his opponents merely held the ball for most of the game rather than try to compete with Kansas. He left after his junior year to play for the Harlem Globetrotters.

Chamberlain then moved on to the National Basketball Association, where he broke virtually every existing record. He still holds most of them, including most points scored, highest field goal percentage, and most rebounds. Chamberlain is the only player ever to score 100 points in a game – no other player has ever scored more than 81.

Wilt retired in 1973, built an exotic mansion in Bel-Air, and by his own account bedded 20,000 women. He was such a fine athlete that many teams tried to lure him back onto the basketball court – even when he

was 50. He died at the age of 63 – he had heart problems that surfaced late in his career. As is often the case with sports superstars, Chamberlain collected a lot of nicknames over the years, from “Goliath”

in high school to the enduring “Wilt the Stilt.” His favorite, though, was “The Big Dipper” – coined by a teammate who watched him repeatedly stoop to fit through doorways.

can trust in what is not seen. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) I know

focusing on the material side of life is not really your forte, but this may be a week when looking into how you define success in your life will really pay off. Know that it is about financial success, but it is also about emotional success and spiritual success. Don’t allow yourself to fall short in any area.

By Jessica MackinBay Street Theatre presents

its final production of the 2013 Mainstage Season with A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, running through September 1. This absolutely hilarious comedy stars Peter Scolari with Conrad John Schuck and Jackie Hoffman.

The book is by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with lyrics and

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forummusic by Stephen Sondheim, music direction by Ethyl Will, and directed and choreographed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus, specifically Pseudolus, Miles Gloriosus and Mostellaria. The musical tells the bawdy story of a slave named

Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. Throughout the entire performance the audience could not stop laughing. Seeing the production in such an intimate setting as Bay Street Theatre just added to the audience's enjoyment.

Peter Scolari who gives a stellar

performance, has Broadway credits with roles in shows like Hairspray, Sly Fox and Lucky Guy with Tom Hanks. Scolari is now cast on the new hit show “Girls” on HBO.

Tickets are $67.50, $77.50 and $79.50. For more information call the Box Office at 631-725-9500 or buy online at www.baystreet.org.

By Laura Anne PelliccioWhen i t comes to hearing

cosmetic terms such as invasive or noninvasive treatments, medical spas, laser services, injectables and life-changing surgical procedures, there are two groups of consumers.

The first group is the people who do their homework and know what the latest technology is, where to find it, who is the “best” in performance. The second group would like to consider preserving their youth through science but don’t know where to begin or who to trust. They may be scared of being misled and won’t take that first step alone, hence the decision is to just age gracefully.

However, when it comes down to it, a consultation with a dermatologist is favored when finding anti-aging solutions.

The Hamptons is a competitive place when it comes to cosmetic procedures. I was fortunate enough to visit the newly renovated office of Dr. Kenneth Mark, MD in Southampton and had the pleasure of talking with him about his specialty treatments. He is a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant Professor of Dermatology at NYU, where he teaches dermatology surgery to residents.

Dr. Kenneth Mark is the go-to dermatologist when having concerns about signs of melanoma and skin cancer. He has the latest in biopsy technology that is able to quickly diagnose and start treating these cancerous issues immediately. Between the ambience of his office and his thoughtful team of professionals, Dr. Mark’s knowledge and confidence in explaining his theory on how he practices medical

Our Local Dermatologist - The Anti-aging Solution For Anyone

procedures was comforting and completely sold me. He treated my skin and supervised the minor therapies his RN performed, such as a salycilic peel. He has an excellent reputation for the traditional injectable services we hear about such as Botox and Restylane. It’s almost an art the way he works with science.

With offices in Southampton, East Hampton, SoHo and in Aspen, the doctor offers an exclusive technology called Ultherapy, a pre-requisite or alternate route to a facelift. For ages 35 and up, this is something to consider as a long lasting anti-aging treatment. It’s a beam of light that is

projected onto the parts of the face. It goes through the epidermis, the dermis and down into the soft tissue area that is the part which would be cosmetically tightened in a facelift. Ultherapy will generate collagen in this area which promotes tightening of the skin. After reviewing the ongoing portfolio of “Before & After” success photos and an extensive practical demo from Cindy Welch,

RN for the office, I am delighted to vouch for Ultherapy. Consider a consultation for this service in the offices of Dr. Kenneth Mark and see the world of youthful cosmetic procedures that are available. I'm looking forward to my next visit already.

President of Vera Moore Cosmetics will join Linda B. Shapiro/LBS Productions and Natalia Saavedra today as they bring special goodies to the campers at Camp Quintipet, a camp for children who have cancer and their siblings. The camp is on Shelter Island and opens its grounds for one week to these children. Currently there are 98 girls and 63 boys attending, between the ages of 6 and 20.

After 24 years the major funder has had to make a difficult decision to stop funding the camp. Those who have been involved are determined to keep it going. The purpose of this visit is to see how funds can be raised to perpetuate this program. It happens to be their "Big Formal Dance" that evening. Vera Moore will be transforming all of the girls into princesses with her fabulous make-up line.

Ingredients (serves 4)1 1/2 lbs salmon filet6 oz risotto (uncooked)

1/2 white onion1 bay leaf

5 oz peas (fresh or frozen)1 oz white truffle oil

2 oz butter1/2 c parmesan cheese

1/2 c white wine1/2 gallon of water

2 medium sized parsnips2 c canola oil

salt and pepper to taste

MethodBegin by dicing the onion and

heating a large pot over medium heat with 1 oz of oil. Sauté the onion until translucent and add the bay leaf and risotto. Stir with a wooden spoon to

Grilled Salmon With Truffled Sweet Pea Risotto & Parsnip Crisps

coat the rice then deglaze the pan with the white wine. Allow the wine to reduce for a moment then add the water.

While the risotto cooks over medium heat, heat up the grill then peel and slice the parsnips into thin strips. The risotto does need constant attention and stirring through the cooking process, however be careful not to stir too much.

While the risotto continues to cook heat the rest of the oil in a small pot over medium heat. When the oil comes to temperature, fry the thin strips of parsnip until golden brown.

Once the grill is hot, you can grill your fish. First, lightly oil the flesh side of the fish, then season with a bit of salt and pepper. Put the salmon flesh side down on the hottest part of

the grill. Once you have the desired marks on the fish you can move it to one of the vegetables racks on your home grill and close the lid for about five minutes to finish the cooking process.

Meanwhile, when the risotto

becomes thick add the butter, cheese, truffle oil, and peas. Continue to stir until all the ingredients have been incorporated into a creamy cheesy rice dish. Plate the risotto and top with a piece of salmon and the crispy parsnips.
