INterCHANGE Arts in Contemporary & Traditional Culture Dr. Ballenge-Morris is a Professor in the Arts Administration, Education and Policy Department and the American Indian Studies Cordinatorfor Ohio State University. She teaches art education classes that specialize in diversity explorations. In 2007, she co-authored a book Interdisciplinary Approaches to Teaching Art in High School (NAEA Publications). Her research and service to the field demonstrate her commitment to education as an agent of community change. Gregg Deal is a husband, a father, an artist and a member of the Paiute Tribe of Pyramid Lake. As a provocative contemporary artist/activist, much of Gregg’s work deals with indigenous identity and pop culture, touching on issues of race relations, historical consideration, and stereotype. He has recently finished as Native Arts Artist-in-Residence at the Denver Art Museum. Rose B. Simpson is a mixed-media artist focusing in ceramic sculpture, metal, fashion, painting, music, performance, installation, and most recently, custom cars. Simpson has shown her work internationally, and is in numerous museum collections. Residing on the Santa Clara reservation, she explores the many ways to deconstruct gender and culture based stereotypes and social ideologies by wandering between ceramic or fashion or drawing or music studios, working on her classic cars and motorcycle in her shop, or pulling weeds and feeding animals on the farm. This year's Institute, INterCHANGE: Arts in Contemporary and Traditional Culture, will offer workshops and presentations supporting interdisciplinary instructional practices and providing thoughtful information about cultural heritages and current practices. This Institute will provide a space to reflectively consider deeply personal and socially controversial issues embedded in discussions of tradition, identity, and power. Admission is $75 which includes coffee services, a light continental breakfast, and afternoon snacks each day. Participants will be responsible for their own lunches. 27 hours CDE Re-licensure credit will be documented. One 508 graduate credit available.
