Festivals and Tourism: how destinations become alive15:00 > 17:00, Grand Union Hotel, Glass Hall

As a network of festivals, EFA aims to connect festivals and the tourism sector to inspire each other’s work and objectives. The main focus of the meeting is to see how festivals can contribute to attractiveness of a destination and how they can contribute and benefit from promotion cam-paigns by tourism organisations. How can the content of thousands of festivals in Europe improve the work of tourism boards and organisation?

Many of tourists immerse themselves in the destinations cultural offer:tours,festivals,events,museums,theatre,sightsandsounds.Withoverabilliontouristsannuallyworldwide,tourismhasbecomeasignificanteco-nomic,socialandcultural force.Festivalsareparticularlysuitedfor tour-ism.Unlikemanyothercultural forms,Festivalsbringadestinationalive,showsitinitsmostvibrantnature,allowsconnectionswithitscitizensandoffersauniqueexperienceofadestination.Thepresenceoffestivalssigni-fiesthatcityorregionisproudofitsculture.

An Introduction to the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018Festivals have been contributing to Europe’s artistic life for decennia. Arts

Festivals have inspired the artistic discourse and reflected the social and historical turning points in Europe’s last and current centuries. Festivals bring thousands and thousands of audiences and visitors to cities every year – and bring an added value to a city’s offer. The very particular meaning festivals can give to people’s daily lives is immeasurable.

It is quite impressive to see how festivals are deeply involved with both tangible and intangible heritage. From a brief mapping we conducted, it is clear how active our EFA members are in all aspects of working with, and for, heritage either when working in UNESCO sites, working with historic monu-ments, promoting our common intangible heritage and investing in bringing people together in a unique moment and format creating the heritage of the future. Here is the mapping we produced. Festivals as a form of presenting the arts are considered European cultural heritage in the EU’s narrative.

In Conversation aboutArts are worth it! In conversation about the role of cities in investing and supporting culture

Starting off with a presentation of the KEA research commissioned by EUROCITIES “Reshaping cities and regions through smart investment in culture” this conversation proposes to discuss the breadth of cultural invest-ment affecting a wide range of policy issues such as Cultural heritage, tourism, social cohesion, education and urban planning.

Some of the suggested talking points are: What is a smart investment in culture? Does it support the development of the heritage of the future or merely plays on protecting the existing heritage in a city? What is the importance of having professional quality / artistic offers giving the audiences the possibility of getting to know the city’s heritage and participating in the individual & collective history of Europe?

The[Herit]AGEoftheARTS–KeynoteSpeechKeynote Speech by Peter Bossman (Committee of the Regions & Mayor of Piran) in representation of Karl-Heinz Lambertz (President of the European Committee of the Regions)

The transnational perspective on dialogue and collaboration in the setting of a joint urban agenda where arts and cultural activities, like festivals, play an important role in inviting citizens to have a constructive say and contribution to an harmonious life in Europe and for people in the world. Our ever more urban diversities celebrated in arts festivals are an opportunity for every single person when understood and communicated as such. A perfect mechanism already in place is the dialogue platform of festivals.
