‘Material Land’Artist, Jenny Pope, begins her resi-dency with a sculptural installation around the old site of Portobello’s industries. The industries around the Figgate Burn contain an infamous past, the Prussian blue works being involved in a court case about pollution in 1800. Jenny will construct sculptures refl ecting the rich but deadly local colours: Prussian blue, blood red, mustard and white lead, and highlight-ing continued human environmental impact.Lamposts around the Figgate Burn, Westbank and the Prom.
Jenny also hosts a community gather-ing & closing event for this year’s Art Walk involving locally collected bricks, and playful kiln making on the beach, culminating in fi ring and cook-ing of foraged ingredients.Sun 15th, 4-7pm,Beach by Pipe Street/Harbour fl ats. Please bring along any locally sourced bricks you may have to form part of the kilns.
‘Eponymous’Eponymous is a site-specifi c, outdoor painting installation that connects Portobello in Scotland with the port in Panama from which it takes its name. The work references some of the shipping routes and navigational paths in the Firth of Forth as well as those close to the Caribbean coastal town of Portobelo (formerly Puerto Bello), which is situated close to the Panama Canal, and was once an important stra-tegic post for defence and trade. ‘The Minor Walk Manifesto’
Alec Finlay is composing a manifesto that defi nes and promotes the minor walk – the kind of very short walk practiced by people with constrained walking or disability. The Promenade in Portobello is frequently used by people enjoying minor walks. The text blends playful, poetic and imaginative assertions with sketches of local minor walks. The manifesto considers how the minor walk might differ from a standard walk, and what we can learn from it. Extracts from the manifesto will be included in Finlay’s Travelling Gallery exhibition, Day of Access, which will also feature in the festival.Event with Alec Finlay: Friday 13th Sept, 5.30pm meet at the Travelling Gallery (outside Town Hall), with walk at 6pm, followed by in-conversation with Claudia Zeiske (Deveron Projects) at Portobello Independent Bookshop.‘Day of Access’ exhibition at Travelling Gallery by Town Hall Open: Fri 13th (1-7pm)& Sat 14th Sept (11am-5pm)

‘Warning’Visiting artist - Offi ce of Public Won-der (Kiera O’Toole, Ireland) develops an installation for the fi rst weekend of the Art Walk that aims to reveal what is visible, to call attention to what is not. Connecting with the natural landscape and Portobello’s post-industrial site, the work uses naturally found materials that cen-tre on the local fragile ecology and environmental conditions. The three-part work focusses on the all familiar groin warning structures, with site specifi c drawings at the beach side of the pumping station, public warning signs and “Wonder Shells” displayed at an undisclosed site. ‘LAND MARK’ is a two-year project involving a public programme of residencies, commissions and walking based practice that considers Portobello’s industrial past and the changing land-scape centring around ‘Material Land’ & ‘Working Land’.The fi rst year starts with a period of research for our residency artists: Jenny Pope, and Felicity Bristow + Susie Wilson, with Nicky Bird commencing her residency from October 2019. Many of the resulting works relate to the area in and around the kilns and Telferton Allotments. Funded by Creative Scotland, City of Edinburgh Council & The Robertson Trust.
The FOOTPRINT PROJECT centres around a series of walks, and cycle journeys that invite the public to navigate the familiar and unfamiliar around Portobello, Musselburgh, Craigentinny & Leith, culminating in a printed map, designed & illustrated by artist, David Lemm, to be printed by Dec 2019. We are de-lighted to work with artists: Chris Dooks, Alec Finlay, Holger Mohaupt, Deirdre Macleod & Suzanne Parry on this project with a range of walks, cycle journeys, talks being held during the 2019 Art Walk. Funded by Paths for All Smarter Choices, Smart Places Fund & Scotrail Arts & Culture Fund managed by Foundation Scotland.
