With New Year’s just days away, most of us have our party plans set and part of those plans may include partaking in traditions
with roots in our native countries. Many of us with Hispanic heritage share in the ritual that stems from Madrid Spain of eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight. We make a wish with each “uva” (grape) to ensure 12 months of good luck. Other South and Central American countries burn an effigy of the old year. Others insist in wearing, yellow or red underwear for “good luck.” In America, the most famous tradition is the dropping of the New Year ball in Times Square, New York City, at 11:59 P.M. Thousands gather to watch the ball make its one-minute descent, arriving exactly at midnight. And those that are fortunate enough to be in the Caribbean during this holiday season will be pleasantly surprised to find a unique experience in ABC islands as they are replete with colorful and
lively traditions that you can read about in the pages that follow in our Hola Caribe’s Holiday feature. Regardless of how you celebrate the New Year, there is one international theme that ties us all together: New Year’s Resolutions. There is something refreshing and definitive about resolving to make changes at the beginning of a brand-new year. It feels like getting
a new start on life. We’re full of hope and anticipation. We reflect on the past year of mistakes, as well accomplishments and look forward to a hopefully brighter and more prosperous year. Champagne toasts to health, money and love, “salud, dinero y amor” are predominant during the holiday season. So send thoughts of love out to your friends, family and the universe,
and combine it with sincere actions of kindness and generosity and you shall receive good fortune in 2011. This is the secret to a good year and a good life. Have a wonderful holiday and have a very blessed year!
El sueño es para el cuerpo lo que el tiempo muerto es para el cerebro. La frase del Dr. Michael Rich tiene mucho sentido: si no
duermes te fundes; y lo mismo sucede si no eres capaz de reposar la mente. El Dr. Rich es un hombre particular. Pri-mero trabajó en cine y llegó a ser asistente de di-rección para Akira Kurosawa. Luego estudió me-dicina y salud pública en Harvard. Finalmente se inventó una disciplina acorde con estos tiempos: mediatría, es decir, el estudio de cómo se rela-cionan los niños y los medios para aprovechar al máximo esa interacción. En una reciente charla para la Asociación Pediátrica de EEUU, el Dr. Rich señalaba que ac-tualmente los chicos viven en constante estado de estimulación gracias a las pantallas electrónicas, computadoras y la conectividad instantánea. El re-sultado es que sus cerebros se acostumbran a saltar de una distracción a otra sin enfocarse ni necesa-riamente aprender. Por ello insiste en la necesidad de recuperar el aburrimiento, para que el cerebro tenga tiempo de entrar en “neutro” y procesar la información que recibe. Pero ¿cómo lograrlo con tantos mensajes, correos, redes sociales y juegos en la punta de
los dedos? Sencillo: no se puede. Una vez que la mente se acostumbra a la sobre esti-
mulación se convierte en una adicta ¿Has proba-do pasar una semana sin Blackberry o conexión a Internet, y si lo has hecho, con qué voracidad te conectas tras el ayuno? Los expertos en el uso de los medios por jóvenes y niños relacionan la tecnología con la comida. Un consumo descontrolado y de mala calidad deriva en obesidad mental. La idea no es demonizar el PS3, el BB o el Facebook, sino en-tender las consecuencias y educar a padres e hijos en su uso razonable. Esto comienza con el buen ejemplo, porque de la misma manera que pode-mos enseñarles a comer chatarra, podemos abrir-les las puertas a otras actividades que no dependan de las pantallas. Como saber perder el tiempo, por ejemplo. No quiero hacer una apología al dolce far niente, aunque ejercitarse en el dulce arte de hacer nada es el antídoto ideal para esta adicción a la tecnología. Basta observarnos y ser honestos con lo que vemos. O como sugiere Liz Pearle, direc-tora de Sentido Común Media y asesora familiar, preguntarnos con honestidad ¿quién está contro-lando la situación, la tecnología o yo? Y al respon-der, por favor, no se distraiga con el chat.

El 12 de Enero, un terremoto de 7.0 de magnitud sacudió a Por-au-Prince Haití, derrumbando edificios y destruyendo casi todas las infraestructuras del país. El gobierno estimo que unas 230.000 personas perdieron sus vidas, más de 300.000 heridos y más de un millón de personas perdieron sus hogares. Ayuda humanitaria comenzó a llegar al país pocas horas después del terremoto, pero esto no fue suficiente para parar los saqueos y huelgas de esta devastada nación.
En Enero 27, después de meses de especulación, el jefe ejecu-tivo de Apple Inc. lanzo el primer ipad de niño. La tableta por-tátil proporciona la función del Mac Book laptop y la movili-dad de un iphone. El ipad salió al mercado en abril del 2010 y vendieron más de 3 millones unidades en tan solo 80 días.
El 19 de Febrero el famoso golfista Tiger Woods se disculpo emocionalmente después de los varios rumores de sus aventu-ras extra maritales. La esposa de Woods no atendió a la confe-rencia de prensa. El anuncio lo hizo después de tres meses de silencio y especulaciones posteriores a un accidente de auto-móvil que sufrió frente a su hogar.

On January 12, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake shook Port-au-Prince, Haiti, toppling buildings and destroying most of the country’s infrastructure. The Haitian government estimated 230,000 people were killed, more than 300,000 injured, and more than one million people left homeless. Humanitarian aid began flowing into the country within hours of the quake, however it was not enough to prevent rioting in the economi-cally ravaged nation
After months of speculation Apple Inc. CEO unveiled the company’s first of its kid iPad. The mobile tablet provided the functionability of a Mac Book laptop and the mobility of an iPhone. The iPad hit shelves in April of 2010 and sold more than 3 million units in just 80 days.
On February 19th, golf legend Tiger Woods made an emo-tional apology after rumors of several extra-marital affairs. Woods’ wife Elin Nordegren was not in attendance at the press conference. The announcement broke three months of silence and speculation following Woods’ apparent car crash in front of his house.

El 27 de Febrero, un terremoto de 8.8 de magnitud sacudió la región de Maule de Chile, provocando a la vez un Maremoto. Las cifras de muertos después de los dos desastres alcanzaron los 800. Los temblores se sintieron por casi un mes después del primer temblor. El 11 de Marzo, otro temblor de 6.9 de magnitud mato a otra persona.
El 23 de Marzo, después de varios meses de debate, el pre-sidente Obama firma el mayor movimiento de la legislación social asegurando cobertura de seguro a casi todos los ameri-canos. Por supuesto, esto no entrará en vigencia por meses o años posterior a su firma.
Abril 5- Explosión de mina en West Virginia. El 5 de Abril, una explosión en la mina de carbón en Montcoal en Raleigh, West Virginia, dejo 29 muertos. Niveles altos de metano fue-ron detectados en la mina. Este fue el peor desastre de minas de carbón en los EEUU desde el año 1970 cuando 38 trabaja-dores perdieron sus vidas.

El 20 de abril, El Deepwater Horizons, un equipo petrolero flotante exploto matando a 11 de sus trabajadores. La explo-sión causo un derrame de petróleo por tres meses y alcanzo las costas americanas de Luisiana, Mississippi, Alabama y Flori-da. Este derrame lo pudieron controlar el 15 de Julio.
El 23 de Abril, a pesar de la oposición de la casa blanca, el gobernador de Arizona firmo la SB1070, una de la más estricta ley inmigratoria del país. La ley nueva le permite a los oficiales de la policía detener a cualquier persona que ellos sospechen de ser ilegales en el país, y el que no cargue sus papeles de inmigración será castigado de cometer un delito menor. Esta ley a creado criticas en la comunidad Hispana, que reclaman que esto inspira controversias raciales. El Gobernador Brewer comento que el gobierno federal se tardo mucho en reformar las leyes de inmigración.
El 1 de Mayo conspiración para bombardear paralizo a Time Square en Nueva York. Cámaras de seguridad mostraron a un hombre caminando y alejándose de una camioneta donde después consiguieron materiales explosivos pero nunca deto-naron. Dos días después, el abogado general de EEUU, Eric Halder anuncio el arresto de Faisal Shehzad mientras trataba de abordar un avión que se dirigía a Pakistán. Shahzad fue sentenciado a prisión de por vida el 5 de Octubre sin libertad condicional.
On April 20, The Deepwater Horizon, an offshore floating oil rig exploded, killing 11 workers and forcing other workers onto life boats. The explosion set off a three month oil leak that reached American shores in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. The leak was not stopped until July 15.
On April 23, despite opposition from the White House, Arizona Governor signed SB 1070, one of the most stringent immigra-tion laws in the country. The new law requires police officers to detain people they suspect are not legally in the country, and makes it a misdemeanor crime to not carry immigration papers. The law drew criticism from the Hispanic community, which claimed it would encourage racial profiling. Governor Brewer claimed the federal government had waited too long for immigration reform.
On May 1, an attempted bomb plot shut down New York’s Ti-mes Square. Security cameras showed a man walking away from a smoking SUV. The SUV was found to have explosive materials, but never detonated. Two days later the U.S. Attor-ney General Eric Holder announced the arrest of Faisal Sh-ahzad while reportedly attempting to board a plane to Pakis-tan. Shahzad was sentenced on October 5th to life in prison without parole.

El 3 de junio- Joran Van Der Sloot, sospechoso del asesinato de la Americana Natalee Holloway en el año 2005 fue arresta-do en Peru después del asesinato de Tatiana Ramírez. El cuer-po de Ramírez fue hallado muerto a golpes en un cuarto de un hotel en Perú alquilado por Van Der Sloot. Las cámaras de seguridad filmaron a Van Der Sloot entrando al cuarto con Ramírez y luego saliendo sin ella. De acuerdo a la policía el admitió el crimen de Ramírez el 7 de Junio pero luego desmin-tió su confesión.
El 1 de noviembre Los gigantes de San Francisco ganan su pri-mera serie mundial desde el año 1954 derrotando a los Texas Rangers 3-1 en el sexto juego. Esta fue también la primera vez que los Texas Rangers llegan a una serie mundial.
El 2 de Noviembre, los Republicanos ganan el control abso-luto de la casa y se sumaron otros 6 puestos en el Senado. Muchos dicen que el triunfo se debe a que quieren cambios de la agenda de Obama, incluyendo el seguro medico y el in-cremento del déficit. Nancy Pelosi perdió su posición como la representante de la casa.
Arrestan a Joran Van Der SlootJoran van der Sloot arrested
On June 3, Joran van der Sloot, suspected in the murder of American Natalee Holloway in 2005 was arrested in Peru fo-llowing the murder of Tatiana Flores Ramírez. Ramírez’s body was found beaten to death in a Peruvian hotel room paid for by van der Sloot. Security camera video caught Joran entering the room with Ramírez, and leaving without her. According to police he admitted to Ramírez’s death on June 7, but later took his confession back.
On November 1 the San Francisco Giants won their first World Series since 1954, defeating the Texas Rangers 3-1 in Game 6. It was the first time the Texas Rangers had ever reached the World Series.
On November 2, a GOP tide rolled through Washington as Republicans won full control of the House and picked up six seats in the Senate. Most called the sweeping change a state-ment against the Obama agenda, including health care and rising deficit. Nancy Pelosi lost her position as House speaker. That job will likely be filled by House Minority Leader John Boehner.

Las islas ABC (Aruba, Bonaire y Curaçao) ofrecen algo más que un escape en las fiestas navideñas. Aquí podrán reunirse con sus familiares y cele-
brar el fin del año al estilo de estas islas. Ellos tienen sus tradiciones originales y regionales asociadas con las ce-lebraciones navideñas que son muy divertidas. Las navi-dades y año nuevo en el sur del Caribe significa platos es-peciales, entretenimiento y fuegos artificiales que podrán celebrar y disfrutar en sus vacaciones con mucha alegría. Algunas de las especialidades que incluirán en los menús en esta temporada son las hallacas y los olie-bollen, deben probarlos si no están familiarizados con estos platos tradicionales. Otro especial de las fiestas navideñas son los grupos de gaitas que aparecen en cada ocasión, es una música muy alegre que se origino en el Zulia, Venezuela y la cantan en las fiestas navideñas. Si este es su primer año nuevo que pasa en las islas pre-párese para algo realmente impresionante. Todas las islas preparan millones de fuegos artificiales que lanzan el año nuevo y se les conoce como las pagaras. Todos los nego-cios y hogares los prenden a las 12 de la media noche en punto llenando las calles de explosivos, ruido, y humo. Se cree que esto aleja la mala energía que se acumulo durante todo el año, dejando el ambiente tran-quilo y limpio para comenzar un prospero y feliz año nuevo. The ABC Island’s offer more than a winter escape and a memorable family gathering for the end of the year; they have their own unique regional traditions associated with
the holiday season that are fun to discover. Christmas and New Year’s in the Southern Caribbean means special dishes, enter-tainment and fireworks for a celebration that delivers more bang for your vacation buck, literally! Certain treats will be included on menus that are an essential part of the season, such as ayaca and oliebollen, which you should not hesitate to try if unfamiliar with these regional delicacies. Even the fabulous gourmet feasts offered by such re-sorts as the Marriott and Radisson will be sure to include these island favorites. Ayaca originate in Venezuela where it’s called “halla-ca.” Each cook has their own “secret” recipe, but the ingre-dients basic to an acceptable ayaca include a chunk of ham or beef, some shredded curried chicken, an olive, cashew, prune and pickled onion. This is all molded together with some firm cornmeal paste called funchi and wrapped in banana leaves. Usually purchased frozen, islanders boil them in the leaves to be unwrapped when enthusiastic diners partake of this holiday treat. A hearty dish, you will find it quickly satisfies your hunger and makes a great lunch or appetizer. Oliebollen are the Dutch version of zeppoles, which anyone who has attended a St. Joseph’s Day festival will know. A light, sweet batter, sometimes dotted with raisins, is tossed into hot oil and when done, sprinkled with powdered sugar. A New Year’s Eve party on the ABC islands is not complete without this treat! Another essential element to Christmas festivities is the appearance of Gaita groups at every occasion. The musical style originates in the Zulia area of Maracaibo in Venezuela. Historians believe the name is derived from gaits, the Gothic word for “goat”, which is the skin generally used for the mem-brane of the furro instrument, primary to their particular sound. Aside from other regional instruments such as a cuarta, a small guitar, drums and the pounding rhythm they produce is what gives gaita music its distinctive appeal. Regional holiday mu-sic is quite exuberant compared to what is traditional in North America and conducive to dancing in the streets. If this will be your first New Year’s Eve in the islands, you will find it a revelation. Nothing can quite prepare you for an entire island setting off the millions of firecrackers that com-prise the pagaras every business and household ignites at the stroke of midnight, filling the streets with explosive noise and a fog of smoke. The belief is this will cause the bad vibes which may have built up in the past year to vacate their premises, leaving the environs calm and pristine to herald a prosperous and ha-ppy New Year. The skies will be filled with fantastic pyrotechnics for hours prior to midnight, and a number of resorts and larger businesses will host remarkable professional displays for the en-joyment of all. Una de las tradiciones más queridas de las islas y que fue inspirada por los holandeses, es la llegada de Sinterklaas varias semanas antes de su día memorable. Las familias se reúnen en el puerto y muelles para darle la bienvenida ya
que llega de España con sus asistentes (Swarte Pieten). El 5 de diciembre es el día de la gran cena y los niños colocan sus zapatos esperando que Santa Claus pase en su caballo y les deje dulces y juguetes. Tradicionalmente un poco de grama se recoge y un jarrón de agua se le entrega por su gran esfuerzo. Santa Claus y sus asistentes hacen numerosas visitas públicas en los colegios, las tiendas y en eventos locales donde se le presenta a los niños y les habla sobre su buen o mal comportamiento. Si uno de los profesores le informa a Sinterklaas que el niño se ha portado mal durante el año, no recibirá su regalo navideño. Los niños que se portaron muy mal, serán amenazados por un Swarte Piet que les dice que se los llevara para España en su saco. Los padres usan esto para asustarlos cuando se portan mal. La tradición de Sinterklaas fue antes de Santa Claus y está basada en un personaje real del siglo IV. A San Nicolás, en holandés, se le llama Sinterklaas o Sint Nicolás, en alemán, Sankt Nikolaus, quien fue el arzobispo de Myra en Turquía. Be on the lookout for Sinterklaas and his mischievous Swarte Pieten
One of the islands’ most beloved traditions handed down by their Dutch colonization is the arrival of Sinterklaas a few weeks prior to his memorial day. Families gather at harbors and piers to welcome Sinterklaas as he arrives from Spain with his Zwar-
te Pieten. Until his feast day on December 5, children will put out a shoe, in the hope that Sinterklaas will pass by on his horse and leave them a treat or a small toy. Traditionally
a bit of grass is gathered and a bowl of water provided for his very overworked mode of transport.
One can expect the venerable gentleman and his assistants in colorful garb to make many public appearances at schools, shops and events, where he often gently lectures the children on proper behavior. If teachers inform him that one of the children has been very naughty over the past year, they may not receive the traditional treats that the Zwarte Pieten usually award, candies and kruidnoten, tiny ginger cookies. Those youngsters with particular behavior problems might even have a Swarte Piet threaten to take the child back to Spain in his sack;
such a warning is often used by parents to modify unwanted behavior throughout the year.
The tradition of Sinterklaas predates Santa Claus, and is based on a real person. In the fourth
century A.D., St. Nicholas (in Dutch called “Sin-terklaas” or “Sint Nicolaas”; in German
called “Sankt Nikolaus”) was the bis-hop of Myra, which is now situated in Turkey. According to the legend, he saved his town from starvation. The story also credits him with reviving three dead children, and offering gifts of dowries to poor girls. It is believed that he died on the sixth of December in 343. In 1087 his relics were taken to Bari in Italy. It is unclear why, according to the Dutch tradition, he comes from Spain. Possibly, it has something to do with the fact that St. Ni-cholas was the patron of sailors. In the 17th century, Holland was famous for its navigation. Perhaps by contact with Spanish sailors this myth began, and explains why St. Nicholas has “Zwar-te (black) Pieten” to help him, because the Moors dominated Spain for several hundred years. The celebration of Sinterklaas takes place on the eve of his departure on De-cember 6, when he quietly heads back to Spain to return the following year with his Zwarte Pieten to delight the island children once again.

KLM Royal Dutch Airli-nes is partnering with a commercial suborbital
space-flight venture planning to operate out of Curacao. KLM, a division of Europe’s largest air-line, Air France-KLM, has pur-chased “a few” tickets for subor-bital spaceflights through Space Experience Curacao (SESC). SEC is a private venture backed by two Dutch entrepre-neurs that plan to operate a two-seater Lynx suborbital spaces-hip being developed by XCOR Aerospace of Mojave, Califor-nia. The advertised price for a
ride to space on a Lynx spaces-hip is $95,000.One person ri-des alongside the pilot. A news release, jointly issued by XCOR and Space Experience Curacao, said KLM plans to offer subor-bital spaceflights for frequent flyer mileage redemptions and in vacation packages. Space Experience Cura-cao announced recently its inten-tion to lease a Lynx suborbital spacecraft, pending U.S. gover-nment approvals for the vehicle to be located on the island of
Curacao in the Netherlands An-tilles. The Lynx is a two-seated pilot spacecraft designed for half-hour suborbital flights up to 100 kilometers, which takes you to the edge of space and then re-turns. It is designed to use its own power to go to orbit using reusable kerosene/liquid oxy-gen rocket engines. Projected flight testing of the Lynx Mark spacecraft may start as early as 2011. Commercial spaceflights are scheduled to be in January 2014. XCOR would provide ope-rational support at the proposed Space Port Curacao. The space port in Cu-racao will offer a combination of high-tech adventure and is-land tourism. A similar service, backed by billionaire Richard Branson’s London-based Virgin Group, is setting up commercial space operations in New Mexi-co. Mojave, California-based Scaled Composites has already begun test flights of a six-pas-senger, two-pilot suborbital spa-ceship that it built for aspiring space line operator Virgin Ga-lactic, which sources say have collected more than $50 million in deposits for rides that cost $200,000 per person. Both ven-tures will offer passengers a few minutes of weightlessness be-yond Earth’s atmosphere and a view of the planet from a vanta-ge point of about 65 miles above ground.

El Parque Nacional Marino de Bonaire acaba de ser nominado para estar en
la lista del World Heritage Site de UNESCO. El parque marino será presentado al World Herita-ge Center en Paris antes de abril del 2011 para obtener un estatus permanente en la lista de lugares UNESCO. Por el buen cuidado que ha tenido Bo-naire de los arrecifes de corales, se les puede ofrecer a los bucea-dores una gran diversidad de vida submarina. El parque abarca un área de 7,000 acres y cubre to-
das las aguas alrededor de la isla, desde su marca más alta del agua, hasta 200 pies de profundi-dad. La ley prohíbe estrictamen-te recoger o caminar sobre los corales, usar arpones o remover cualquier vida marina. A los bo-tes le prohíben soltar el ancla en las aguas protegidas de la isla. El ecosistema de los arrecifes y los manglares proveen un hábitat extensivo para una gran cantidad de especies marinas y corales. Tortugas, rayas, y peces de cada color imaginable encontraran en las aguas prístinas del parque. Es algo que no deben de perderse mientras se encuen-tren en Bonaire.
The Bonaire National Mari-ne Park has just made it as a candidate on the UNESCO
World Heritage Sites list. The ma-rine park will be presented to the World Heritage Center in Paris by April 2011 to gain permanent status on the UNESCO sites list.The Bonaire Marine Park was founded in 1979 to protect the island’s natural resource. Due to the island’s special care of the coral reefs, Bonaire is able to offers diving buffs an amazing diversity of underwater life. The park covers an area of around 7,000 acres and encompasses all
the waters around the island from its high-water mark
to the 200 ft. depth. Legislation strictly prevents collecting or wal-king on coral, using spear guns, or removing any marine life. Boats are not allowed to drop an-chor in most of the island’s water.The coral reefs and mangrove ecosystems provides an expan-sive habitat for a large amount of marine species and coral. Turtles, rays, and fish of every imaginable color abound in the pristine waters of the park so it’s a must see while on Bonaire.

Un concurrido grupo de personali-dades se dio cita en el Big Five Club, en Miami, para celebrar
los éxitos del Grupo Editorial El Vene-zolano en su décimo octavo aniversario. Clientes, relacionados y amigos pudieron disfrutar de una gran velada donde, bajo la animación del talentoso profesional Nelson Bustamante, su Director Oswal-
do Muñoz, se reconoció la labor de des-tacados colegas de medios de comunica-ción locales e internacionales, así como de empresarios, productores y artistas. Coincidiendo con la mayoría de edad, en esta oportunidad el Grupo Editorial El Venezolano reconoció los 18 años de trabajo con la cadena CNN a la periodis-ta Patricia Janiot, quien no pudo asistir por encontrarse en Argentina cubriendo
el fallecimiento del ex presidente Néstor Kirchner. Igualmente, el Premio Ronald de Souza, en honor al destacado periodis-ta venezolano que ejerciera la profesión con gran respeto, profesionalismo y de-dicación, correspondió en esta ocasión a la periodista Bernardette Pardo, quien se-gún comentara emocionada tuvo la opor-tunidad de trabajar con este gran profe-sional que ya no está entre nosotros, pero sus trabajos, esfuerzos y lucha por la no-ticia y verdad son eternos y representan un legado del que estamos orgullosos. En esta ocasión, bajo el aplauso efusivo de los presentes, el destacado director venezolano Javier Peña obtuvo un merecido re-conocimiento especial por la labor comunita-ria que viene realizando desde hace 14 años con la orquesta de la empre-sa Goodwill, compuesta por artistas discapacita-dos, digno ejemplo de perseverancia y empuje para el logro de los obje-tivos propuestos. Final-
mente, antes de dar paso a la actuación del cantante venezolano Carlos Moreán, junto a Carlos Puchi y su grupo musical, así como del grupo Bokaina, el Director Oswaldo Muñoz agradeció el apoyo in-condicional de los lectores, anunciantes y amigos, quienes han permitido la per-manencia de El Venezolano al servicio de la comunidad e hicieron posible, junto a un gran equipo de profesionales bajo la dirección de la Gerente General Sylvia Bello, una edición especial de colección dedicada a un tema tan importante como es el Trigésimo Aniversario de la llegada del Mariel.
