Story behind the innovaJon
ARUPRATAN GHOSH
DescripJon of innovated Bamboo Greenhouse Technology
• It is a package of technology innovated to construct an eco-‐friendly, energy efficient, low-‐cost (6-‐8 usd/m2) naturally venDlated greenhouse.
• It is comparable to common greenhouse made up of iron in respect of cleanliness, durability (10yrs), and usefulness with a liKle more maintenance.
• It is effecDve to perform precision farming. • It is simple, scienDfic, affordable, and easy to built greenhouse and can adopt moderate climate control mechanisms (heaDng/cooling/etc).

Brief descripJon of associated technologies innovated
[A] Curing of mature bamboo: This unique technology cured truck-‐loads of whole bamboo only within 6 hours. (applied patent in India,2011)
Perforated pipe
Covering of curing bay
Pipeline from boiler & Gate valve
[B] Design Of Greenhouse: The design engineered the clean structure and consider load distribuJon, fixing of cladding materials & equipments (mister, sprinkler, etc), and joining of bamboos. (applied patent in India,2011)
Joining
Simplest model of naturally ventilated stand-alone ‘BAMBOO GREENHOUSE’

Brief descripJon of associated technologies innovated
[C] GrouDng of bamboo: Two different methods were successfully created; 1st is the direct-‐grouDng method, and 2nd is the pre-‐cast grouDng method. (2nd -‐ applied patent in India,2011)
[D] Fan-‐Tube Exhaust System: It is an venDlaDon system that throws hot & humid air (low in Co2 ) out from enDre greenhouse, thus increase the air-‐removal rate as well as inside air circulaDon. It is more important when openings are covered with insect-‐proof net. (applied patent in India,2011)

Why BAMBOO ? The extreme product of nature
It is one of the fastest growing & most useful plant on earth. Bamboo, as stem, emerges from ground (rhizome cluster) at its full diameter and aKains its full height within one season (3-‐4 months) and then the branching and leafing starts. Within 3 years the bamboo matured completely with full hardness and strength (by ‘lignifying’ and ‘silicific aDon’ process). It will collapse and decay naturally due to the fungal and mould growth if not harvested within next 2-‐4 years. Av. Approximate Mechanical Parameters (kN/ cm2) -‐ (1) ElasDc modulus -‐ 2000, (2) Compressive strength – 8.5, (3) Tensile strength-‐ 15 to 38, (4) Bending strength -‐ 8 to 27, and (5) Shearing strength -‐ 2. [taken from Deutsche Bauzeitung (DB) 9/97]
Just imagine the effect of bamboo greenhouse on environment & economy-While 2300 no of small ‘bamboo greenhouses’ were made by Sikkim Govt. in farmers field, it distribute 7 millions INR to bamboo growers & saved -‐ (1) about 150 millions of INR of Govt. exchequer, and (2) about 3450 MT of GI-‐pipes or 6270 MT of iron ore.

Advantages of Bamboo Greenhouse
• Low capital investment increase economic viability of greenhouse culDvaDon.
• Low cost (6-‐8 usd/m2) and beKer producDon aKract small farmers in precision farming.
• Scope of increase commercial bamboo-‐farming. • A bamboo greenhouse KIT can help farmers of remote areas to adopt precision farming.
• It can be designed for shelter-‐type to mulD-‐span guKer-‐connected high-‐end greenhouses according to the requirements.

Problems of Bamboo Greenhouse
• Supply of quality matured bamboo. • Lack of necessary R&D. • light (regular) & heavy (every 3 years) maintenance of bamboo greenhouse.
• Lack of availability of skilled craismen and experienced/capable bamboo greenhouse construcDon companies.
• Proper markeDng of designed bamboo greenhouse.

Prospect Reason to pay for this technology – Less capital investment, similar
comparaDve efficacy, more financial viability, scope of conDnuous supply of bamboo, larger customer base and finally higher turnover.
Customer segments 1. Small & marginal Farmer – They should be in cluster and/or under different
Govt, or privet schemes. Government, Extension worker, private food-‐chain companies, and NGOs are the channels through which the technology may reach to the farmers. Suitable for organic producDon in farmers field.
2. Big Farmer & Agri-‐business (nursery etc) unit – They can get direct access to this technology from Agro-‐service providers or consultants. The informaDon about them may be available from media/adverDsement and web-‐site.
3. Big Agro-‐producJon based Company – Floriculture industry, ExoDc and/or organic crop/vegetable growing industries, etc. who frequently and unnecessary invest more towards capital cost for greenhouse.
4. Agro-‐soluJon/service provider company/Contractor – Greenhouse construcDon companies and other such agro-‐service provider may also act as strategic Partners. Personal contact & web-‐sites are the best way to connect them. They can access this technology through Proper agreement and/or permission.
