China’s imports of soybean oil have dropped in 2009/10 as trade disputes with Argentina, which normally supplies about 75 percent of the imported oil, have yet to be resolved. In an effort to offset that shortfall of the most commonly consumed oil, processors have increased their imports of soybeans and accelerated crushing activities to boost oil production, and have also purchased large volumes of soy oil from the United States. Imports of other vegetable oils have also surged, notably rapeseed and sunflower oil. In order to ease rising domestic prices, there are reports that the government is considering the release of vegetable oil reserves. There is no doubt that China needs imported soybean oil and other vegetable oils to satisfy growing demand. While expanding soybean crush helps to partially moderate the import shortfall, it also can lead to strengthening exports of soybean meal.

PRICES U.S. soybean export bids, FOB Gulf, in September averaged $435 per ton, the highest from a year ago. Strong demand for exports, primarily from China, continues to support prices despite advancing U.S. harvest and prospects of record global supplies. As of the week-ending September 30, U.S. soybean sales commitments (outstanding sales plus accumulated exports) to China totaled 13.3 million tons, compared to 12.5 million a year ago. Total commitments to the world are a record 22.2 million tons compared to 20.6 million for the same period last year.

5 year Average (2003/04-2008/09) = $326

TRADE CHANGES IN 2010/11 • U.S. soybean exports are up 1.0 million tons to a record 41.4 million due to a strong

pace of sales and reduced export prospects for Argentina. • Brazil’s soybean exports are up 1.0 million to a record 31.4 million on a larger crop

and strong foreign demand. • Argentina’s soybean exports are cut 1.5 million tons to 12.0 million in response to

intense competition from other exporting countries. • Canada’s rapeseed exports are boosted 0.4 million tons to 6.4 million on strong

demand by China. • China’s rapeseed imports are up 0.4 million tons to 1.9 million driven by continued

strong crush demand for oil. • China’s palm oil imports are cut 0.2 million tons to 6.9 million due to accelerating

seed crush activities and rising oil production. • India’s palm oil imports are up 0.2 million tons to 7.2 million in response to rising

vegetable oil consumption.
