The Great Gatsby

English Teacher:__________________Reading Journal.

You are expected to read The Great Gatsby before we begin studying them in class. Therefore you should use this Reading Journal to make notes on the texts which will then be used in class.

It is absolutely vital that you do not forget to bring these with you to EVERY English lesson.

You will use these three texts in Section B of your exam for Unit one. You will spend one hour on this and will be provided with a clean copy of all texts to use in the exam. The Assessment Objectives for Unit one Section B are:

AO1 – Articulate creative, informed and relevant responses to literary texts, using appropriate terminology and concepts, and coherent, accurate written expression.

AO2 – Demonstrate detailed critical understanding in analysing the ways in which structure, form and language shape meanings in literary texts.

AO3 – Explore connections and comparisons between different literary texts, informed by interpretations of other readers.

Aspects of Narrative can include the following areas:

Setting – refers to where the action is set, and its significance beyond just being a place where something happens.

Time and Sequence – refers to the order in which events are shown and so is a key part of how narrative works.

Characterisation – refers not just to the people in the story but, much more importantly, their character traits and how they are revealed.

Narrative Voice – refers to the person telling the story and the influence of that voice on the narrative.

Voice – voices can help to establish character traits, and so a part of characterisation, but also they enable authors to give information.

Point of View – used to help with the idea that the story is told from certain standpoints or perspectives.

Destination – Can be used to mean that the narrative reaches certain conclusions working out that the story has moral messages, ideas which we are expected to believe in, can lead to looking at the ideology of the story.
