AS Level Film Studies Production Planning: Location Report

For my AS film studies project portfolio, following a textual analysis oftwo chosen romantic comedy films, About Time (2013 British) and

Friends With Benefits (2011 American) in which I have bothresearched and studied how both directors, Richard Curtis and WillGluck, manage to show the use of the generic convention meet cuteall the way through their films. I have steadily developed my portfolioby producing a production recreated from the ideas presented in mytextual analysis, using both scenes involving the meet cuteconvention as a base to create my own.

Furthermore, my aim is to create a two minute extract in the RomanticComedy genre supported by my location report shown below, showingsix images both in-house and outdoor that show the environment I will

be locating my filming at, for my making, where I will also create amotion of romance and affection between the characters and throughthe surrounding atmosphere as well as the use of diegetic and non-dietetic sound.

Location 1 House - A young female teenagers bedroom

My first chosen location was a young girls bedroom located inChadwell Heath, Essex. For the involvement of cinematography Iintend to use a wide shot and medium shot which will show how theroom reflects on my selected protagonist Shantel, played by (Emel

Tabeahmadi) and what her emotions and feelings will show whilsttalking to her boyfriend who is the Antagonist, Antonio (ElliotFernando-Day) on the phone. This will create a warm and joyfulatmosphere towards the audience showing the involvement actionsrepresenting the Romantic Comedy genre. The sound will begin

diegetic as the radio will be playing the song on the wings of lovewhich will emphasize Emels thoughts towards her and Elliotsrelationship, also giving a smooth transition into their phoneconversation when he calls her phone during the moment of the songbeing played. It is evident from my textual analysis that the use of avariety of shots and sound gives an effect towards the meet cuteconvention as it sets the mood of the atmosphere. The colour pinkpresented on the walls and duvets will enhance the romanticcharacteristic of the film, reflecting the happy and warmheartedpersonality of my character. Overall, the room itself will give the viewof an innocent young girl whos going to be led in for a sensational

surprise.

shot and medium shot in order to present the characteristics of theantagonists character in general but also, his feelings towards Emellikewise. This will show the viewers what type of person he is and hisviews towards their relationship by showing his emotions in a close upshot, revealing extreme details in the moment of them communicating

over the phone. In this scene, there will be no sound which will createan atmosphere that will leave the audience wanting to know what hewill do next whilst preparing for the phone call with Emel. The lightingwill be bright which will leave the atmosphere feeling mutual and calmwhich is what the colour blue also represents in the room itself. Thecamera will be positioned on the chest of drawers facing towards thebed in order to show Elliots actions in the scene as well as his facialexpressions and will also allow the audience to be aware of theirsurroundings. The room being slightly empty with only a bed, chest ofdrawers and TV will reflect on his character, which connotes that he isa simple young man who is not a complicated individual.

Location 3 house Kitchen

My third selected location was in a kitchen, which in the sequence, willbe presented as Elliots household where both individuals will havetheir romantic meal together, and planned as a surprise by Elliot tocelebrate their anniversary. For the cinematography, I will use a

variety of shots from shot reverse and over the shoulder shots to wideand extreme close up shots in order to exaggerate the love towardseach other and to introduce the next scene which will consist of a flashback representing how they met involving the meet cute conventionto reflect back on my textual analysis and how the directors used the

convention in their films as well as including the principle of the meetcute elements in my own remake of the production.Location 4 Valentines Park Bench

The next location that I chose for my filming to take place was thebench positioned in the middle of Valentines Park. For thecinematography, I intend to use an establishing shot to introduce thescene and its presence towards both characters leading to their

romantic association. By using an establishing shot, this will also setthe mood of the atmosphere, showing the viewers what the outcomewill most likely be due to the location I have decided to use whenfilming. I will also use a close up shot which give the audience anunderstanding of where they are in relative to the character andsurrounding setting itself connotes a clear outlook of the conversationtaking place between the two characters, reflecting back on the

unexpected ways two people meet through the meet cuteconventions analyzed in my two romantic comedies.

For the involvement of sound, my objective is to use diegetic sound ofthe children running in the park playing, whilst people talking and

ducks quacking in the river to show the natural surroundings and theimpact they will be giving towards the scene in order to make themeet cute scene look more realistic and organic, similar to the twofilms I have studied in AS level film. For the Mis-en-scene, I will befilming when the natural lighting reflected from the sun and clouds,starts to fade. This will show the length of time both characters havemanaged to communicate, showing a strong level of bonding betweenthem without any issues or interruptions. This will also show theatmosphere as a cool positive place mirroring on the romantic gesturebetween the two characters and showing that the meet cuteconvention gives a good introduction to a film just by unexpected

occurrences. In expressions of the narrative, my intentions are to havean involvement of narrative in the scene between the two characters.This will happen when Emel leaves her book beside her on the benchto eat lunch, which Elliot then picks up thinking its not her book whichleads to communication between the two. Just like the scenes in mystudied romantic comedy films, this unpredicted conversation betweenthe two leads on to a stroll in the park which then closes the sceneleading back to the presence and out of the flashback. Surroundingswise, I decided to locate my filming at this particular bench in thewhole park as it is placed right in front of a patch of red and pinkflowers. The colour pink symbolizes love and romance, caring,

tenderness, acceptance and calm alongside red which indicatespassion, excitement and strength which will both deliver a messagetowards the audience that the best kind of love is always unexpected.

As my final scene of the flashback, I decided to use this pathway inValentines Park to conclude how both characters met and to link thisclosing scene of the flashback back into the presence of their romanticmeal. The camera shot will be wide and extreme long shot, whichconnote the surroundings and their journey relating towards theirfuture, but to exaggerate the specialness the park has replicate ontowards their companionship. The lighting will also be darker torepresent the ending of her vision and the association between themboth. The music will once again be diegetic to keep the natural sounds

reflecting back on their meeting day. In this scene they will both beholding hands looking in to each others eyes whilst walking awayindicating an ending to her fantasizing over their sudden trip at thepark. This will show their emotion and will show a good level ofemotion between both their views of their futures.

Overall, all my chosen locations have an effect towards my two minuteextract and will signify the generic convention meet cute relating to
