Notes from Father Tom… This weekend we celebrate the Third Sunday of Advent, Gaudete Sunday, a day of joy amidst our spiritual preparations for Christmas. Welcome to Sr. Denise Marie Vlna. Sister will be working on a variety of projects here. A lot of her time will be with young people. On December 15, 1979 my classmates and I were ordained deacons by Bishop Pilla who was then an auxiliary bishop of Cleveland. As a priest he had been the rector of Borromeo Seminary so he knew us and we were delighted that he was ordaining us. That was forty years ago. In June of the following year Bishop Hickey, the Bishop of Cleveland, ordained us as priests. Forty years goes quickly. As we continue to move toward Christmas, there are still opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. One is Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m. and of course, Saturday, at 3:00 p.m. I mentioned some financial things last week but I realize some of you might not have been here last week. Matching gifts from companies like Progressive, G.E., and Lubrizol double your support of the church. Giving appreciated stock and if you are 70 ½ giving from required distributions from I.R.A’s can help you with taxes. For people who do not take standard deductions some may benefit from doubling their donation one year and not donating the next. If you have questions feel free to talk with me or with Kathy. In any event, I appreciate what you do to support the parish. In these final days of Advent, keep praying and know that God is always with us.

OPLATKI The Christmas wafer bears an image from the Christmas story and the bread signifies the ‘Bread of Life,’ Jesus. This tradition helps us to remember that Jesus is among us in the Eucharist and in our lives. Oplatki is available at the Parish Center and in the baptistery at the desk in church.
P ’ G John the Baptist is in prison. He has heard stories of what Jesus is doing, and wants reassurance that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah. John’s disciples and those who surrounded Jesus were faithful Jews who would have known Isaiah’s prophecies by heart. God would send One who would bring sight to the blind, healing to those who were ill, salvation to all who longed to know God’s mercy and peace. Jesus’ response to the disciples’ question rings as powerfully in our ears today as it surely did for the people who were with him that day. His actions are precisely those that the people had been told to expect. Jesus is the One for whom the people have been patiently yet anxiously waiting, like the farmer who waits for the fruits of his labor. Jesus is the One for whom our hearts long. W The people had been searching and waiting for generations for the Anointed One of God. They knew in their hearts that they needed someone to bring them back, to close the divide that had grown between God and God’s people. John’s baptism of repentance prepared them for the advent, or coming, of the Christ. John’s message of repentance and the demands of faith, of justice, and care for the poor and oppressed, while comforting to the weak and vulnerable, was challenging to those in positions of power. Like prophets before him, he refused to ignore the promptings of God to speak God’s word. And like many prophets who preceded him, John was imprisoned and eventually martyred. We can relate to the people who went out into the desert to be baptized. They heard John’s urgent call to repentance and his declaration that the Messiah was coming soon. They heard him express God’s care for those who needed it most. They were compelled to hear and respond. Their lives were changed, as their hearts were opened to the reality of God’s love to which John so powerfully gave witness. G We too ache for God’s healing and peace. We wait for God to break into our lives with love. Who among us has not at times felt weak, feeble, afraid? Take heart, you are not alone. God is with you. God is ready to save us from the darkness of sin and lead us to joy in the presence of God’s mercy. This is the message of Advent, and of the whole of the gospel: God desires so deeply to be with us that God came to be one with us in Jesus Christ. Today’s Readings: Is 35:1–6a, 10; Ps 146:6–7, 8–9, 9–10; Jas 5:7–10; Mt 11:2–11 Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
T What does love look like?
It has feet to go to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want.
It has ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of others. —St. Augustine
F This month's food collection amounted to approximately 700 lbs. Monetary donations for the food pantry totaled $1,606 this month. Thanks to all who donated.
Special thanks to the St. Anselm day school children who also collected food and their donations were added to this month's parish collection. And a great big special thank you to Miss Janine DiPronio's second graders who helped sort their donations. Great Job!!!
O T . Most were killed or exiled because they challenged people to follow God's commands. John the Baptist suffered the same way. So what kept the prophets going?
First of all, the prophets had faith in God. They believed that God spoke through them, that God would protect them and support them.
Second, they had patience. They kept going when people rejected their preaching. Some prophets had to be patient with their own weaknesses.
The third gift of the prophets was hope, hope that by keeping God's commands, God's people would be renewed, along with all of creation. Our first reading is an example of such hope, with its descriptions of deserts becoming gardens and the sick and disabled being healed and strengthened.
So what do we learn from those prophets? First, we need to keep our faith in God strong. If you go to church once a week, the bare minimum, it would be like exercising only once a week and thinking that will keep you in shape. Second, we need patience, and not just with our kids. We need to be patient with ourselves and with God. Some people stop going to church because they don't see any spiritual growth in themselves. So be patient; don't expect to become a saint right away. Finally, the reading from Isaiah gives us hope that God will open our eyes of faith, clear our ears to hear God's word (Isaiah35:5), and "meet him with joy and gladness "(Isaiah35:10). Thanksgiving Dinner – Thank you!
At the 28th Annual St. Anselm Thanksgiving Dinner we served 462 dining room and carryout meals and received $2,503 in donations for the Geauga Hunger Task Force.
Many thanks to Pat Kuss for her efforts coordinating our volunteers and bakers. Over 100 volunteer slots were filled by good-hearted people from St. Anselm and the larger community. We had a fabulous array of desserts thanks to all the bakers who contributed pies, cakes, cookies, brownies, and every other sweet treat imaginable.
At the conclusion of the dinner we packaged additional meals for several parish families in need, and we delivered trays of baked goods to our Chester Township and Russell Township first responders who worked during the holiday.
Many young people provided valuable service individually and in groups: placemats decorated by Westwood Elementary and St. Anselm School students applesauce cooked by Girl Scout Troop #70714 carryout cards decorated by Girl Scout Troop #70154 centerpieces created by Girl Scout Troop #70624
We are grateful to our local business donors: Eddy Fruit Farm Giant Eagle Mulberry Corners Pumpkin Patch Patterson Fruit Farm
I appreciate you making the Thanksgiving Dinner a part of your life. Thanksgiving was late on the calendar this year, so it felt like it was on a collision course with the Christmas season. Although Thanksgiving is my all-time favorite holiday and I don’t want it overlooked or rushed through, I also think its spirit of good food and warm fellowship can extend beyond a single day in November. So until we get together again next year, I hope your days are filled with both thanks and giving.
God bless,
Karen Wright Thanksgiving Dinner Coordinator
