Unit G322: Key Concepts Exam

Why?

Aims & Objectives

So you can succeed in the exam!

• We will go through the expectations of the Exam in relation to 2 Case Study examples YOU SHOULD refer to in the exam, alongside your own Case Study examples.

• We will apply this evidence and case study material to an exam paper question.

• YOU WILL hand this is in for marking against the mark scheme (which is available on the BLOG)

• Review the learning and set homework for next lesson.

YOU MUST write down what Marketing is.

YOU SHOULD give 1 example of a strategy for EACH Media Platform.

e.g Poster = Print Media Platform

YOU COULD explain how x1 of these methods is appealing to an institution in targeting an audience.

Vs.

‘Taken 2’ (2012)

Dir. Oliver Megaton

‘The Angel’s Share’ (2012)

Dir. Ken Loach

- Visit each of the following pages.YOU MUST identify x3 differences between EACH film and record them in your exercise book neatly.

Trailer Comparison

YOU MUST, In pairs, watch both trailers together and identify which codes & conventions stand out as similar OR different in terms of marketing strategies.

FEEDBACK

DO!

• Give Case Study examples, make them relevant and make comparisons.

• Focus on the Industry process in terms of a films PDME.

• Refer to theory/key terminology quickly!

• Give statistics/facts that demonstrate your understanding.

DON’T!

• Explain what the film is about in terms of narrative.

• Justify or explain what theory/key terms are.

• Give brief examples – LOTS OF DETAIL IS EXPECTED!

YOU WILL learn how to apply relevant Case Study examples to answering this question “step-by-step”.

YOU MUST make notes on the Case Study examples.

YOU WILL be given the opportunity to plan an answer to the question based on the Case Study material you will be presented, as well as reflecting on your own research.

THEN, you will answer the question in 45 minutes Exam conditions for effective practice and preparation for the exam.

These are the areas YOU WILL need to address when answering a question like the one above IF you get a question associated to:

What is it?

HOW is marketed across different platforms?Comparison between 2 very different strategies and case study examples.

Does it influence our knowledge of the film and our chances of consuming it?

What is actually being sold? Is it appealing – Compare!

What is Cross-Media Convergence?

YOU MUST find a definition of this key term and upload it onto your own page under the heading:

Definition:

‘The PDME of film (in this case) across different media platforms”

What is Synergy?

YOU MUST find a definition of this key term and upload it onto your own page under the heading:

Definition:

‘The PDME of film (in this case) across different media platforms”

High Production Value Blockbusters.

Hollywood conglomerates such ashave a complete Oligopoly over the film distribution market.

20th Century Fox distribute:

Major Studio and Media Conglomerate dominance of Distribution across the platforms.

20th Century Fox is owned and operated by another media conglomerate:

Research and note down what media institutions operate under this media conglomerate.

In the exam - YOU COULD compare this dominance of the media landscape by comparing to another case study you are familiar with:

HOW did the producers (EuropaCorp) of ‘Taken 2’ (2012) capitalise on it’s co-production deal with 20th Century Fox?

YOU MUST find examples of how the film was promoted across the media platforms on the BLOG Page.YOU MUST also find x1 example of Synergy with another global brand that helped the film’s success.

“Tent Pole Production”

(Justin Wyatt – 1994)

?

COMPARISON between a Global Major and Conglomerate and a smaller, independent studio:

RESEARCH!

• What New Media Technologies has the studio synergised with and why?

YOU MUST find x2 examples.

• How is this an example of binary opposition (Levi Strauss) compared to EuropaCorp’s ‘Taken 2’ (2012)

Was the film’s distributors intending to create hype and a crossover hit?

Feedback

“There is no product placement, that would be unacceptable” -

Ken Loach – Director of ‘The Angel’s Share’ (2012)

Feedback – Continued.

Compare and Contrast

Vs.

‘Taken 2’ (2012)

Dir. Oliver Megaton

‘The Angel’s Share’ (2012)

Dir. Ken Loach

YOU MUST research and compare the following:

• Box-Office Takings and DVD Sales• Films they were competing with on the opening

week/weekend that made the film “successful”• Reliance on marketing ‘Star appeal” (Richard

Dyer)

FEEDBACK
